What I find to be the easiest way to get the dust boot re-installed on the piston is to first seat it in its groove in the caliper, then slid the piston into the boot most of the way. Place a piece of wood in front of the piston so that it can't travel too far out. Apply compressed air from the back of the caliper and the air pressure will push the boot out and into the groove on the piston.

Just turn on the vehicle and apply the brake slowly until it pops out. Especially useful if the piston gets stuck when installing it. Also, wear safety glasses. I got brake fluid in both eyes, face and mouth when I was by compressing my piston.

Good video. However, I would've liked to see more details on how to insert the seal into the grove and the cylinder. I was really hopping for that. The outside of the caliper could've used more cleaning and some paint to keep the rust away.

This vid is getting a bit old but still relevant for many cars. My Nissan Note had a stuck calliper so I took it off but could not remove the piston. I reconnected the hose and tried to pump it out but it did not come out completely before jamming. At around 7.30 you used a flat drift/chisel to unjam yours so I tried that and IT WORKED! Thanks for the tip. I've now got to put the seals and rubber cover back in (pity that bit was missing) and after seeing your vid, I'm confident that it'll be ok. Thanks, Gerald, for the vid.

Just bought 4 kits for all my calipers as I wanted to restore them. Mine is a Honda Accord but more or less similar callipers. Glad I searched for this video as the parts are on the way now and I feel a lot more prepared to start on it now. The only thing that I will do different is that I will let the all the fluid go out as it is at least older than 3 years and needs new one. Thank you very much sir :)

I wrap half of a plastic bag around the air compressor blower end tightly like plumbers tape to act as a seal and then jam it in as above. May need to adjust the seal diameter with more or less wraps of plastic to get it :) Will get the most stubborn of stuck pistons out this way but beware the piston can pop out the other side with a lot of force so keep your fingers away from piston face and inside of caliper. I stuff the inside of the caliper with a few rags so the piston gets caught when popped out so it doesn't get nicked/damaged. That way I can reuse it if in good condition plus it helps slow down the piston on exit making it slightly safer.

In addition to the excellent description of the actual process of rebuilding the caliper, I really appreciated the steady camera work and clear direct narration without rambling. Too many instructional videos are painful to watch because the camera is handheld (not on tripod) and bouncing all over the place. Don't this people watch their results and realize how bad their video is? Combine that wobbly camera with "instructions" which are delivered with no preparation so the narration is just a jumble. Gerald's video was lightyears better on both counts, well explained, and expertly filmed. Thank you!

@markkerr3761
@markkerr3761 4 жыл бұрын
Probably a bit late to respond to your message but no, it's not quite the sane process... Rear calipers are generally trickier - mainly due to fact that there's usually a handbrake mechanism to also contend with... And rear caliper pistons wind in, which can be done with long nose pliers if you're stuck but generally, rear caliper tools are required... Not expensive but can be fiddly to use if you're not used to them 👍🏼

If the bleed screws are stuck it can be a hell of a job doing anything with the caliper. I ended up buying refurbished and trading in the old ones. You get a caliper that is like new effectively. After that, I intend to keep up with my maintenance more and take the bleed screws out every year or so, apply anti-sieze on them and also push out the pistons and grease. Many cars simply do not get the attention they need, such as this, and garages will replace pads and discs without giving attention to anything else it seems.

i came up with this when i had a garage years ago. if u cant get the ring on the boot to pop into the groove inside the cylinder [and be very careful with a screwdriver, better to cut a blunter piece of wood] pull boot to end of piston so the ring on the boot is over the edge, then using insulating tape tape the boot to the [clean] piston to hold it in position and u can then push ring on the boot into the groove without having to insert the piston. works really well, as much as i liked the excellent vid i tried for ages to do it his way...impossible

Anyway that works best for you is the correct way. I find in many jobs when I work beside other mechanics I do not agree with their install or removal method, recently watched a mechanic stripdown an in tank fuel filter, I thought he would struggle in many of the ways he approached the clips and seals but did it perfectly in his own way. If it works and the job is correct that is all that matters. I am glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the comment Keith

Its always best to rebuild caliper, its like a few dollars for the seal and boot, it makes no sense to me to give your original caliper up for an unknown rebuild. Just make sure to use assembly fluid/grease and NOT brake fluid and torque all bolts to OEM specs, any library has Automotive Databases.

Its all about time, if you don't have a lift, then kneeling or sitting on the ground rebuilding a caliper on the car, or taking it off, clamping the hose then going inside to start cleaning and rebuilding it takes alot longer. Especially if you have more than 1 caliper to do, and its on your daily driver.

That's what I want to know as well. Isn't silicone and DOT3/4 a non compatible mix?
@JonathanVaucher
@JonathanVaucher 3 жыл бұрын
@@SuperLoffe For lubing inner square seals and piston/cylinder surfaces, it's red rubber grease you're supposed to use in small amounts (it is compatible with DOT3/4 brake fluid). For example on my 08 subaru impreza, the service manual calls for using Fusch Renolit Rubber Grease JP (and when you buy OEM Subaru rebuild psiton seal kits, they come with a small pouch of that pink/redish RRG and also a small pouch of orange silicon grease called Niglube RX-2). The silicon grease is reserved for cylinder outer dust boots for the cylinder and for caliper slider pins and slider pin dust boots. Silicon grease is not compatible with DOT3/4 hydrolic brake fluid. Only the red rubber grease is compatible with DOT3/4 hydrolic brake fluid. If you can't find RRG, you can use brake fluid to lube the inner square seals but the RRG ensure longer life as it's not hygroscopic therefore protects against rust and pitting on the piston much more.

However : you must mention ,,, those who is doing it must keep brake fluid level above minimum line ( Min ) while pumping the brake pedal to prevent air entering the brake fluid which will make cavitation and spongy brakes after brake job . When you feel spongy brake that means air in brake fluid which require more bleeding while adding brake fluid to master cylinder and brake fluid reservoir . 👍👍👍 Thanks again .

I would be concerned using grease on the piston and internal seal. I have looked at several brake manufacturer sites (Raybestos, etc.) and have yet to find one that shows using grease on any parts that will contact brake fluid. They show using brake fluid during assembly of the square seal and piston and the grease is used on the external sliding parts and under the dust seal to help prevent corrosion of the piston that is external to the square seal.

The flexible brake line can definitely be pinched off. They make a specific set of pliers for the job. They also make small clamps for the same purpose. If damage occurs, it's because the brake line has degraded and is not safe anyway. I have the pliers and have used them on multiple brake jobs. It doesn't take much pressure to clamp off the line.

I cant believe you didn't take the pads out and clean the hardware whilst you were doing such a complete rebuild

Hello Stuart, That was all done previously at another service interval before condemning the caliper failure. The pads moved freely and there was no issue there, realistically at that time I had planned to upgrade front brake discs and pads but that all changed and have since moved to Oz and sold the type r to another enthusiast, a very bitter sweet moment 😢 Thanks for watching 🙏

Good On You - for wearing gloves! Last video I watched (half watched) the guy was working on a caliper in bare hands and 'twas not a good sight watching him getting brake fluid all over them. But not good watching all the new stuff going in to a clean insides but leaving the outer body so filthy! That desperately needs sandblasting or soaking in something to at least make it look like it has been rebuilt. Yuk, I would never do that. Do the full job. I also would have put on fresh clean gloves before installing the new seal and piston. Those first pair had lots of dirt on them.

Would have helped if you actually showed us putting in the piston and rubber

Best way I found is 1) install lubed-up inner square seal in it's lubed-up groove (the inner groove). 2) Install lubed-up cylinder outer dust boot in it's groove (the outer groove). 3) Lube cylinder walls 4) Lube piston's surface 5) Gape the already installed/seated outer dust boot with your 2 finger and insert the lubed-up piston in the cylinder through the dust boot. The outer dust boot is much easier to seat in it's groove before you even insert the piston, and the dust boot is easy to gape and insert the piston through once the rubber is properly lubed-up and seated anyways.

New caliper is like $80. Unless its a project car most dont have time to rebuild

I have 3 vehicles. If I had to do something that took time for one vehicle, I'd just drive the 3rd vehicle until I was able to get it done.

New "refurbished/rebuilt" caliper is that 80$ price, not brand new OEM ones. Who knows if it's rebuilt as well as you would rebuild them yourself. Some factories sell you rebuilt calipers that still have the pitted piston inside of them (they just buff out the rust but pitted spots are still there). Other companies do make things right and install new pistons if required. I'd rather check myself if I need new pistons and do the job right than to rely on someone else who might cut corners round. The worst are those calipers they want to sell when doing brake pads/disk at those 20$ oil change places... cheaply rebuilt ones and you're lucky is the last 2 years before they seize up.

It is absolutely a tricky job, did not show it because of my hand position blocking and blurred the focus when recording, it was basically unrecognisable what I was doing when I reviewed it, so I re shot the clip after install and talked about the process.

I think I'll just grab some rebuilt ones. That brake fluid really dries my hands out.

A tip to avoid clamping the brake hose is to buy earplugs, and put one in the hose Works like a charm, and no risk of destroying the hose by clamping (which means a lot of work)

Thanks for the most useful tip. I was just thinking about what to use for this plugging purpose. Never thought of earplugs, but the kind that mush down easily in the fingers could be fitted inside the line easily enough. Seems the brake fluid doesn't eat up the earplug material, which would be one concern, but allowing the brake fluid to flow out a bit after removal of the plug should solve any residue issues. I already have earplugs around as they are used often where I work.

@@gedgetips I guess if you are worried about a reaction you could just cut of a finger to a new disposable glove and place the earplug in that, and then push it in. But I haven't had problems the few hours I've had them in though It's possible that keeping them there for days, weeks or months could be different. But I have no clue actually. If I remember next time I open a brake fluid bottle, I will leave an earplug in some fluid, just to see what happens overtime.
