Seeing all of this work always makes me appreciate the mechanical wonders that cars are. So much time and effort can go into these builds and restorations. I can't imagine working on all of this stuff, let alone being the one who designs it.

The freezing and heating of the parts is not only recommended procedure; it makes the frozen, inner part to contract, and the heated, outer part to expand, so the tolerances widen A LOT, making mating them possible. Once the temperatures equalize again, the parts return to their regular sizes and are now press-fit to one another (and since they then only heat or cool together, they also stay like that).

Another great video. Just a tip for the future, A thick leather belt works pretty good between gears to lock them in place while torquing the gears down. Just fold it up to desired thickness and put it between the gears just like you guys used the aluminum. It'll eat up the belt but not the gears.
@brandonlewis2599
@brandonlewis2599 8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Smith The gears are heat treated and are MUCH harder than aluminum or brass. There is absolutely no way the gears themselves would be damaged.

I know this video is a few years old. I do have one suggestion that will help anyone working with tight tolerance. You saw in the video when they went to the freezer to grab part of the gear and then to the boiling water. And time was getting away from them. What I discovered many years ago and I still used to this day is can of air that you would use to blow dust out of a computer. Can you turn the can upside down and within seconds the shrinking is mediate. I always keep one part with a propane torch and then I take my air and cool down the part. The best part is that you don't have to hurry. You can always refreeze the part immediately. Instead of having to wait for it to cool down in a freezer. If you do a lot of work like this or even work on cylinder heads it's cheaper to buy it by the case. All you have to do is Google it and you can find your best price. I go back and forth from eBay to Amazon whoever is cheaper that. Great video I'm thinking about buying my first Porsche and I like to see how difficult something that I buy is to work on.

A mechanic at an uncle’s construction company was having a impossible time getting new sleeves into a Cat block. So my uncle sent him out to fill an oil drum with ice and water and put the sleeves in it. Told the mechanic “come for me in 2 hours after lunch.” In 2 hours time, Moses went out to the garage and told the mechanic “put them in now.” The sleeves slipped in easier than a greased pig........

Just a clarification only g50 and newer (MY 1987+) transmissions have one piece dog/gears. All 915 derivatives have removable dog rings getrag and Porsche sell replaceable dogs. There is also a special tool used to press the dogs off the gears so you don't have to grind them off. Each gear pair is about $1000 it's worth buying the freaking tool for $100
@johnbell8443
@johnbell8443 8 жыл бұрын
Also. If those rings are Rausch and spiegel gears for 1st and 2nd they ain't going to fit when installed back into the intermediate plate. Ask me how I know.

I get that the metal expands but wouldn't you want the bottom gear to be larger and the top thing so be smaller.
@hondacota4rt
@hondacota4rt 8 жыл бұрын
+Camhin1 You do that to enable an easy assembly. Once they're assembled, and have adapted to room temperature, the outter ring (Top piece) concracts and the bottom gear (inner ring) expands.
@GEMC98
@GEMC98 8 жыл бұрын
+Camhin1 Nah. The Smaller Top gets hot and expands The Bigger Lower part gets cold and shrinks. The clearance (most likely not that much to measure) gets bigger, and you can slip it right on. After it cooled down/Warmed up its normal.
