This video from Sears PartsDirect shows how to rebuild the pump in an air compressor. The compressor motor drives a piston that compresses air in the tank. Worn pump parts and seals prevent the pump from filling the tank with compressed air. If the pump won't compress air and fill the tank, you may need to rebuild the pump.

The compressor motor drives a piston that compresses air in the tank. Worn pump parts and seals prevent the pump from filling the tank with compressed air. If the pump won't compress air and fill the tank, rebuild the pump using the steps in this video. Before you begin, wear work gloves to protect your hands. Unplug the air compressor’s power cord from the wall outlet. Pull the ring on the safety valve to bleed all air pressure from the tank. Remove the front shroud mounting screws. Using a slot tip screwdriver, pry the shroud halves apart at the locking tabs and remove the front of the shroud. Remove the back shroud mounting screw. Remove the back shroud. Remove the air outlet tube from the pump head. Remove the mounting bolts from the pump head and lift the head off the pump. Lift the valve plate off the pump. Remove the fan mounting bolt and pull the fan off. Loosen the Torx screw that clamps the piston connecting rod to the eccentric bearing. Pull the connecting rod off the eccentric bearing. Push the piston and cylinder sleeve up and out of the pump body. Push the piston out of the cylinder sleeve. Remove the Torx screw from the top of piston. Remove the piston cap and compression ring. Place the new compression ring on the top of the piston. Reinstall the piston cap and Torx screw. Slide the new cylinder sleeve into the pump body. Insert the piston into the new cylinder sleeve. Push the piston connecting rod onto the eccentric bearing. Align the piston connecting rod flush with the eccentric bearing. Tighten the piston connecting rod Torx screw to 48 inch-pounds using a torque wrench. Push the fan onto the keyed shaft. Reinstall the fan mounting bolt. Tighten the fan mounting bolt to 120 inch-pounds. Press the new valve plate seals into the seal channels on the new valve plate. Place the new valve plate on the pump body with the reed valves positioned on the handle side of the air compressor. Position the pump head over the new valve plate with the muffler side of the pump head over the reed valves on the valve plate. Reinstall the pump head mounting bolts. Tighten the pump head mounting bolts to 7 foot-pounds. Reinstall the outlet tube on the pump head. Position the large half of the shroud over the compressor and install the back screw. Slide the smaller half of the shroud into the large half of the shroud and engage the shroud locking tabs. Reinstall the front mounting screws in the shroud. Plug the air compressor into the electrical outlet.

With the help of this video I just did this. My compressor is loud and it would not build much pressure past 60 psi. I have used this thing hard for 25 years and I was just going to buy a new one. Here is what I found: My air filter was long gone so grit was getting into the unit and scoring the cylinder walls. This in turn caused the gasket to fail preventing the unit to work properly. The hardest part was getting the right size torx head into the screws to remove the shroud. t25 bit worked. The valve section was stuck to the head so I did not even mess with it. There is no reason for this part to be messed with as it is either good or not and you should not blow a gasket anywhere on the design. Once you have swapped out the new piston seal it will take a little effort to get it back in the new cylinder. Make sure you put the piston in from the top of the cylinder as there is a slight lip on the bottom that will cause trouble if you don't. The gasket for the cylinder to the valve body (big round one) was a bit too large. I almost used the old one as again it should show no wear. I held the head and valve body upside down and with the gasket in the groove I placed the cylinder with the piston on it making sure the gasket was not pinched anywhere and then flipped the whole mess right side up and placed it back on the compressor. I then hand tightened the 4 head bolts. Some of the new kits do not include a screw for the bearing so they are a press fit, if you order a whole new piston. When placing the piston on the bearing, before you tighten the screw, spin the unit using the flywheel weight. This will make sure you piston is in the right spot and it will not hit the flywheel or the fan. Torque everything to spec and pop in a new filter and enjoy!

yeah i just got a kit the piston ring is flat im wondering am i supposed to heat it up and form it to the piston or just force it into the cylinder and let the motor do its thing. i bought the piston-less kit just rings and and cylinder wall kit. i smoked the first piston ring so guess we shall see how this goes...

@user-fh4nw6ct9y not really. I rebuilt it following the instructions. Lasted a whole 20 minutes before it melted, the piston ring back out again. I bought a second kit, and it did the same thing again. Ended up just junking the compressor. Fan was in perfect shape. Maybe the head had an issue, but if the head was worn out, you'd think it just wouldn't build pressure. On the second time I tried to lube the plastic ring on the piston, it made no difference.

@user-fh4nw6ct9y kinda sucked because it's an old reliable compressor, but I got tired of wasting money on trying to rebuild it. I think this is mostly an issue of oilless compressors in high heat location. Which I live in Florida. Just weird it lasted 20 years no problem but the rebuild kits don't last an hr at most. Build pressure twice and stop half way through the 2nd build up to 100psi

you show the new compression ring as being pre formed to fit. The parts I received were flat and if bent upwards to fit into pump body, the ring extends beyond the piston cap, whereas the new part shown does not even quite reach the top of the piston cap. Do I trim it to fit and should the ring extend past the cap?

@@searspartsdirect Model number is 919-167301 Serial #2116100408 Part in question is CAC-248-2 Compression ring that part is flat and has no curve to it. Your instruction video "How to rebuild an air compressor pump" clearly shows (about 1:20 in the video) this part to have a 90 degree bend so as to fit between the piston and cylinder wall. The ring is 2.5" dia. and the sleeve I.D. is 2.35" so ring must be curved or needs to be bent to enable a good fit. unless there is an easy way to bend it as I already ruined one trying to get it to fit.

According to the manufacturer, the formed version of that compression ring is part number DAC-308 ( www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/DAC-308/0009/919.html ). The formed ring is much easier to install. If you need more help, let us know.

What if the pump shaft will not spin? Locked up? Seized piston I assume, and it's a dual valve assembly. How much damage did that cause and do you think it's worth rebuilding? The pump assembly is over $400! I could buy a new one for about the same.
@searspartsdirect

The pump may be worth rebuilding if the compressor parts diagram shows a cylinder kit (which includes a liner for the cylinder wall). If a cylinder kit isn’t available, then the locked piston likely damaged the cylinder wall so you’re probably better off replacing the entire compressor.

Is their a way to tell if the compressor is bad? Or if it's my pressure switch? I have a 1995 craftsman model 919 and it just kicks on a few secs(fan turning) then shuts itself off. Notsure if its pressure switch or maybe compressor went bad. Runs 3secs or so an "click" an shuts off. Plz reply of can

If the air tank is full and the check valve has failed, the pump won't start because of high pump head pressure caused by the failed check valve. To test the check valve, shut off the air compressor (or disconnect electrical power) and drain all air from the tank. Start the air compressor. If the pump runs and fill the tank to the proper pressure and pump shuts off, then the pump and the pressure switch are likely okay and you'll need to replace the check valve. If the pump runs but won't compress air to fill the tank then you'll need to rebuild or replace the pump. If the pressure switch isn't starting and stopping the pump motor at the proper pressures, then you'll need to replace the pressure switch. A label on the pressure switch should show the cut in and cut out pressure ratings of the switch. A 150 psi Craftsman 919-series air compressor typically uses a pressure switch that cuts in at 120 psi and cuts out at 150 psi. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, give us more details such as whether the tank is full and let us know the full model number of your Craftsman 919-series air compressor.

@@searspartsdirect thank you, ya my tank is now empty, when it first started running odd(always on auto so self fills when it needs)it must have had a nearly full tank when it started this. It just runs and sounds real quiet for about 3-5seconds(the fan spins) but it dont fully kick on like normal or build air pressure. Notsure if the pressure switch is half messed up or if it's in the compressor itself. The 2 pistons an rods seem to be moving freely when turn fan and motor also spinning normal aswell. Took cap off motor amd looks new. Put back together and still does same thing. Just wont fully run normal. But compressor itself seems to be in working order(unless theirs things like sensors etc that could stop itself from running also)same with pressure switch that looks new also. Everything seems to look good but theirs obviously a problem cuz I have no air building and it trys to run, but something shuts itself off after a few secs of rolling over. Thanks!!

@@johngracejr9436 Thanks for providing that model number. Here's a link for an online copy of the owner's manual on that model in case you need it: www.searspartsdirect.com/manual/2opmqahxz7-000247/craftsman-919152931-air-compressor The owner's manual provides general troubleshooting tips that may help you. If you have the air compressor hooked up to a 240-volt power supply, check the house circuit breakers for the air compressor. The air compressor won't get the power it needs to run if one of the circuit breakers tripped. If the power supply is okay, then the motor could be tripping its overload protection switch after running for a few seconds. Bad motor windings, loose wiring connections or damaged wiring could cause the motor overload protection switch to trip. Shut off power to the air compressor and check wiring connections. Reconnect any loose wires. If wiring connections are okay, check the power supply wiring for damage. Repair or replace any damaged wiring. If wiring is okay, then the motor could be bad. We hope this additional information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.
