In this video I will take you through how to rebuild or replace the Master Cylinder on my 99 Audi A3 TDI.
This video should apply to a large number of similar VAG group cars from around the same period as my car and hopefully may help with other cars too.
The rebuild was done with a rebuild kit from ebay so there were some differences but these were not an issue.
Also notes for when doing the job, something that isn't obvious in the video is that I was regularly cleaning everything with brake cleaner due to dust flying about - if you are going to do this have some brake cleaner ready.
Some notes for the video - I normally film with my DSLR and LG G3 phone for harder to reach or moving shots.
Unfortunately my DSLR battery went flat which resulted in loosing some videos of changing seals and on my phone my memory card started to play up as it got full which has lead to fun and games making some clips "good". Normally I might have an issue with one shot but in this video it was quite frustrating!

It helps if you leave the 13mm mounting nuts just started then you have movement on the master cylinder to make the fitting of the two brake lines unions easier. Fingers ONLY till you are sure you have the Unions started into master cylinder thread correctly.

Sometimes the unthreaded ends of the brake pipe nuts are flared out a little when the pipes are tightened. This can be the cause of difficulties in starting the thread on re assembly. Leaving the mounting nuts until after the pipes enables one to align the treads more easily.

if you are struggling to get the resivoir off on the left of the master cylinder there is a nut on some models in between the brake lines keeping it on.

You can try bleeding brakes, then driving on loose gravel and jamming on brakes to operate ABS pump, do that a few times then bleed again!

Hi, I'm thinking i need to do this job on my VW golf mk5.. I've just replaced the clutch master cylinder but I'm unable to bleed the system or get any flow from the brake and clutch reservoir to the clutch master cylinder? It's got me it really has, although my brakes are good and the clutch master cylinder fluid supply line does not flow thorugh the aluminium assembly beneath the reservoir but rather from above in the reservoir itself?? I thought that it was a blockage but could not find anything wrong? Bamboozled a bit! Thanks for the video!! Subscribed.

Hi, I enjoyed your video. It was useful for me. I have the following question: Do you know which of the two models brake boosters that are mounted on the golf mk 4/Audi A3 platform - 1J1614106E (lhd) or 1J2614106B (rhd) generates bigger effort/pressure on the brake master cylinder? As far as I can see first model is 10" size and the second one is 7/8" but is dual-diaphragm/chamber. So which of them is more effective? Do you know if the brake boosters mounted on the golf mk4/A3 platform are better/more effective than those installed on golf mk3/passat b4 platform? BR

Hi - thanks, I might have one of these in my garage from a A3 1.8T so can check model numbers and size but will be a few days. On the second question I'm unsure but will answer with a generalisation that brakes tended to get better with time and the higher horsepower models had 288mm brakes and the special R32/S3 has 312mm brakes (if I remember correctly) so I imagine the parts would need to be sized to match accordingly and on the earlier marks I imagine that they would be smaller It's crazy as over time we see brakes keep getting bigger so would be interesting to see what a V10 Tourareg uses. One potential way to check this would be using ebay to find car reg's and EuroCarParts to see what parts they stock?

Hi, thanks for the answer. Mk4 R32 is with 334 mm front brakes and dual piston calipers and S3 is 312mm front discs and single piston Ate 54 calipers. You're right that parts need to match, but finding the correct part numbers is not an issue since there are a lot of catalogues. As for the brake booster there are two models which are installed on golf mk4/A3 - one is single pot/chamber/diaphragm 10" diameter, mounted on lhd vehicles and the other one is dual pot/chamber 7/8" size mounted on rhd vehicles. My question is if you have observation which of the two brake servo is more effective/provides bigger pressure on the master cylinder? In general dual diaphragm/chamber servos are more productive than single ones (for instance on Passat B5/Audi A4/A6 platform), but not always. So I'm searching for someone with practical observation to confirm or deny that hypothesis. On Golf mk4 base all lhd vehicles are with single pot servo (stock) and on rhd cars they mount dual chamber servo. I know that one of the reason is lack of space/room in rhd vehicles. I just don't know if there's any difference between the two models. Unfortunately I haven't driven a rhd mk4 to make a comparison with the lhd version. BR

Hello, i replaced cylinder on skoda octavia, and pedal travel too far. Even pressure bleeding did not help. Problem is air in the cylinder not in abs. Mechanic did not do bench bleeding. So I am thinking to combine pressure bleeding and very slow pedal pressure, what is your opinion. Thank you for answer.

Hi, did you manage to fix the soft pedal issue in the end? Having the exact same problem with my MK4 Golf. Have tried pressure bleeding numerous times and master cylinder rebuild is next on the list..

We got it better but not perfect. I've had better results since vacuum bleeding.

you need vcds/vagcom for abs bleeding, its a pain in the ass i will never do anything that has something to do with emptying the brake fluid dry.

Vag com abs bleed, start from closest line to the master, and bleed the next one when done with front same on back and then for manual gearbox you bleed the clutch as well. If that doesn't help- take it for a spin try carefully your brakes a few time and come back. you might want to go the opposite way and start another bleeding from the back but but use a wood board to block the brake pedal from travelling too far to the ground when doing a two mans bleeding method.
