Recharging The A/c System
CAUTION: The high side of the A/C system is under considerable pressure. If a can of refrigerant is connected to the high side service fitting, it may explode! The system must therefore be recharged by using the low side service fitting only. If you are not sure which fittings are which, do not attempt to recharge your air conditioner yourself. Wear eye protection and avoid direct contact with the refrigerant as it can cause frostbite on bare skin.
The basic recharging procedure goes as follows:
1. Identify the low side service fitting.
2. Determine the type of refrigerant required by the system. On most 1993 and older vehicles, this would be R12. On most 1994 and newer vehicles, it would be R134a.
CAUTION: R12 and R134a refrigerants are incompatible and must not be intermixed. Use the type of refrigerant required for your A/C system only. On most 1993 and newer vehicles, there's an identification decal or sticker that tells what kind of refrigerant is required. Also, the size and design of R134a and R12 service fittings are different to avoid cross-contamination.
3. Connect a can of refrigerant to a gauge set or recharging hose and valve set. Follow the equipment supplier's directions for making the connections.
4. Open the valve momentarily on the gauge set or hose to blow all air out of the line (this is necessary to keep from introducing air and moisture into your A/C system).
5. Connect the gauge set or hose to the low side A/C service fitting on the vehicle. This is usually located near the receiver/drier or accumulator, or suction side of the compressor.
6. CAUTION: Make sure the can of refrigerant is held in the upright position so only vapor enters the line. Do not tip the can sideways or upside down as doing so will allow liquid to enter the low pressure side of the A/C system (This may cause damage to the A/C compressor). Also, never heat the can to make it empty faster as doing so may cause the can to explode.
7. Start the engine and turn the A/C system on high. The compressor should be engaged or cycling on and off (it may be necessary to jump the compressor clutch directly to the battery if the system is extremely low on refrigerant to keep it engaged). Compressor suction will pull refrigerant vapor into the system and slowly empty the can. This can take up to 10 minutes or more, so don't be anxious.
8. When the can is empty, disconnect the charging hose from the service fitting. Use care when disconnecting the "empty" can from the gauge set or charging hose as it may contain some residual refrigerant.
9. Add additional cans of refrigerant as needed until the system is properly charged.
CAUTION: The most common mistake made by do-it-yourselfers is overcharging. Too much refrigerant can reduce cooling efficiency just the same as too little refrigerant. To work properly, the A/C system needs just the right amount. Always refer to the system capacity specs in a shop manual or other source to determine how much refrigerant is required. System capacities are specified in ounces. One can of refrigerant equals about 14 oz. Usually three to four cans is enough to fully recharge a typical passenger car A/C system that was empty. If the system is low, one or two cans of refrigerant are usually all that's required.

Thank you for posting this video. I found this by chance, after visiting 2(so-called) garages and explaining, cold air one side, warm the other ! I was told my car would have to be booked in for an extensive investigation !!! And we all know what that means- an arse load of cash !!! Saw this vid, got the kit from halfords ,20 minutes later my car was so cold I thought my nipples would explode! So you have saved me a fortune . Thank you and if your ever in the UK - beers are on me,man!

Thanks just got my BMW refilled R134a when the ac was not cold enough but now it's fine causes I haven't refilled the freon for over 3 yrs. After the freon refill the ac works fine and cold in all vents. No major leaks and the pressure is normal. Your video was helpful. Thank you

That is true. When one comes to this road they can either pay $1800 for a full E46 HVAC cooling system diagnosis and overhaul (that is the average price for this model BMW AC repair) or they pay $10 every summer for a new can of freon. Choices my man. Choices. lol

Thanks so much for this! It was way more helpful than anything the air recharge manufacturer provided. I used AC Pro and the only difference was you had to set the outside temperature on the can's dial before injecting the gas. I especially appreciate your comment on the driver side only blowing cold air when low. I thought that was going to be a much more intense repair. The AC is blowing cold again. I hope you have more DIY repair videos on this particular model of car. Mine is approaching 100,000 miles and I need to do many tune ups. In fact just recently I lost major MPG.... not sure whats up.

@daniells71 l'm not an expert on the AC, but as an engineer I understand basic systems & this method works fine. After 2 years with this car I realized the circuit discharges a small amount of charge over the winter months when the AC is off. BMW Dealerships charge between $1,800 and $3,000 to fix AC systems. Local shops aren't much better and love to get cars like this ($). I'm only with this car a few years before I sell it. I highly doubt this is junking the car or these kits will not sell

For optimal refill do it with the Can upside down and shaking the Can is what it actually says on the Can. Some refill kits and Cans may work vice versa with the can upright. Either way seems to be a suggestion for optimal results and not something of a life or death matter. In 2012 there is now a dozen different Can refill kits each saying different things so go with what your Can says however in terms of just understanding the BMW E46 AC system go with what everything I'm saying in the video

@daniells71 You've suitably listed out all your credentials and that's impressive. I have NOT tried this guy's method of topping off freon but I truly "junking the car", that's all I have been saying. I also haven't been trying to prove anything to you, so I don't know what you're thanking me for. PS - I forgot to ask anyone at BFEST 2010 about this. @GangreneVagina I spent six months in a 4yr college mastering automotive a/c systems, from rebuilding compressors, understanding different chemical structures, analysis, research, presentations etc. I still have a shitload of text books that I refer to, not to mention former classmates, teachers, and old school mechanics, most with over 30yrs experience and some up to 50yrs. Thanks but you don't need to prove anything to me, I have not recommended dealerships, and you can do whatever you want.

refrigerant leaks past the compressor shaft seal by design. the refrigerant contains oil which needs to be displaced to all parts of the compressor. it has nothing to do with winter. in fact, the compressor runs in the winter and summer. when you use the defrost, in the winter, the compressor runs intermittently to dry the air being directed at the windshield as moist air will only fog the windshield more. btw, you can't attach that hose and gauge to the small cans.

@daniells71 While I don't agree with some of the statements this kid made ("add until up to the upper blue" or whatever), the canisters DO come with a gauge to answer every question you just asked. There's a chart to use to determine whether you have too little, correct amount or too much based on ambient temperature. The bottom line is that it may not be the absolute perfect repair, but it also isn't going to "junk your car" or even, as you amended your statement to, "junk your ac system".

Use your AC during the winter , also. The dry air ( albeit warm) will demise windows in no time, plus, having the refridgant running round your system, will keep the seals lubricated and stop them from drying out, a popular source of leaks , that, and perforated condensers!! Good guide though, but U would suggest wearing some sturdy gloves and covering your arms, freon is nasty stuff if it escapes and can cause severe frostbite :).

One word of advice. You should never turn the refrigerant canister upside down. That will get liquid in your system. You only want to introduce vapor into your low side.
@dorkmanwalkin

@SuperSupersnooper if you read the instructions, on many refrigerant cans, it does say to rotate the can from vertical to 90 degrees, back and forth. holding the can upside down will not cause the refrigerant to not work. it works just the same and it actually fills much quicker. the manufacturer doesn't recommend doing it this way but why would they if you don't need to?

@CarSpirit Check to see that your front defroster/defogger is not on first. Since that tends to sometimes blow warm air out the window vents even with the AC on. My write up is only based under the condition that your driver side vents is blowing cool to cold air whiles the passenger vents is blowing warm air. Check these conditions and if you find it is true for your car then follow what I do in the video. NOTE: that the problem can also be more serious in your car than it was in mine.

@daniells71 I haven't tried this technique myself, so I can't swear to any of this. I do know that BMW doesn't manufacture the AC system themselves so perhaps it's not as touchy with oils. And even though I used expensive Lubro Moly oils in my car and get what you're talking about BMWs being fluid-snobby, I sometimes wonder if it's really necessary when I meet lots of guys with BMWs who don't go crazy using the most expensive boutique fluids.

@daniells71 In fact, this Saturday, we're driving to Pasadena for Bimmerfest 2010 and maybe I'll talk to some other owners to see if they use Olaf's technique to top off freon. It just seems to me that using this stuff, which does have lubricants in it, to top off an AC system seems fairly harmless. Notice he didn't fill an empty system entirely of this stuff. And the idea of a $10 DIY (half a can or so?) versus whacky-ass dealership prices of $200-$300 for this service seems attractive to me.

What they teach you in college can change overtime as the technology of cars improve. My DIY is not trying to replace the proper and more expensive way of doing this. At press time our E46 cars are between 12 and 5 years old. Many owners are under 30 years old, and will not keep them for much longer, it is a recession & when it comes down to splurging 3,000 on a non drive train related problem of a feature we use only 4 months out of the year that can be fixed for 30 a can what will you do?

That is 180 years of $10 freon cans by the way. Statistics show that most people buying these used 1999 to 2005 E46 BMW cars most likely won't own them more than a year or two before they either total them (I'm looking at you first time driver teen crowd) or move on to something newer or easier to keep. So they $10 freon can DIY is not a bad deal.

@GangreneVagina By junking i mean replacing your ac system. The cost to do that... might as welll replace the car. For example have you ever asked yourself why there are different types of oils that need to be put in the system while recharging an ac system (just like engine oil changes)? How do you know which one is the right one? how do you know if you have to much or too little, or maybe none? Anyway nuff said, that's why I keep getting business, do whatever you like!

Easier in the view but wtf is going on in your write up? What is the high side vs low side? Then you say above " If a can of refrigerant is connected to the high side service fitting, it may explode! The system must therefore be recharged by using the low side service fitting only." Ok great. Hook up to the low side fitting which I don't know which is low. Then you say "6. CAUTION: Make sure the can of refrigerant is held in the upright position so only vapor enters the line. Do not tip the can sideways or upside down as doing so will allow liquid to enter the low pressure side of the A/C system (This may cause damage to the A/C compressor). You didn't hold the refrigerant in the upright position as stated in #6. You held it upside down which is different than don't tip upside down as doing so will allow liquid to enter the low pressure side of the AC system. The video looked good but the instructions go against what you're doing in the video. I"m on to another video. Nice try...

Rick Darcy I just copied the instructions from a generic method (for all cars) for refilling your AC. Don't waste time reading it if you have the same BMW as me. It is simple to just follow the video to find the correct port. Furthermore if you can't find the port in your engine just let someone else do or pay a shop to do it. I've been doing it since 2009 every other year and it has always worked. I just get the basic $5 to $10 can of r134 without the fancy additives and it works perfectly.

That said, I appreciate the discussion and welcome all constructive criticism BUT at the end of the day if these kits were not for sale, or didn't work we wouldn't buy them and they wouldn't sell them. If you want to hate on me junking my car you might else well hate on everyone that drinks soda, eat hamburgers, smokes and don't run 3 miles a day/3 times a week. Relax man!
