How to record better audio is the topic of this Thursday's Tech Tip! The gear I recommend in this vid is: Rode iPhone Mic (super handy): amzn.to/2tfYoI2 . Zoom H4n Pro: amzn.to/2IacKhu
Some useful extras that I use also are:
Dead Cat for H4n Pro (bundle with power adaptor also): amzn.to/2trMIB4
Mini Tripod for Zoom: amzn.to/2lrBPvn
I see a lot of musicians (mostly - and mostly ones who are doing their own audio and video), simply set up a camera in a spot that looks good, and then HOPE that they record ok audio. Well... if you want to record better audio - you can use both the the video's audio or your camera audio PLUS you want to set up another phone/mic/zoom type unit to record the BEST AUDIO that you can get. The cleanest signal, the best sound. Do what you need to do to get both! ....and THEN, you will get much better audio and sound results for your videos.
I always figure - do as much as you can to make yourself sound as best as you can!

Hey Dave! Awesome video just wondering a few things. Do you always record in mono from your headphone output on your mixer into only one of the direct inputs of the zoom h4n pro. Would this be a xlr or 1/4inch and does this have any impact on the sound. I'm guessing you have the multitrack recrding feature on the zoom to record the two built in condenser mics and direct input from the mixer. So are you recording 3 or 4 tracks at the same time, using only one or both the direct inputs on the zoom. And when you're wanting to record when a sounds guy is mixing your sound, do you just ask them nicely for the headphone output and plug it in or would they provide the foh mix or something? Also wondering if you change the position of the mics from the zoom depending on if youre playing inside in a room or outside. Or if you change the setup slightly. Do you have the mics positioned at the 90 degree spread on the zoom since you can change it. My mixer is the allen and heath zed 60 14fx so im guessing i would just plug a 1/4inch cable straight from the headphone output into the zoom recorder not sure if I would use a spliiter cable to split it and use both inputs to provide the stereo sound if that works. Cheers Jackson

Hey Dean! My mic and guitar are going into the little mixing desk I'm using for this gig. I'm sending the headphones or monitor output of that desk into the Zoom unit. (The master output from that desk is going to the FOH). Then I'm using the two condensor mic's on the Zoom unit to capture the room audio. It's a really effective yet simple combo. Feel free to reach out with any other questions etc!

@@davidshanhun Thanks for getting back to me! I subscribed to your channel it’s great. Great Music 👍🏻. I was also wondering what microphone you are using for most of your live gigs? Also in regards to your Zoom mixer are you just mixing with the onboard effects, eq, comp, reverb etc? Or are you adding other plugins in post? (E.g Waves, uad, slate etc)
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 3 жыл бұрын
@@deancooper2440 Thanks Dean! Mic is a Sennheiser E845, and with regard to the Zoom mixer it depends - if it's live it's usually from the Zoom mixer (reverb only, there is no compression on the l8), and I will typically tweak EQ and add some compression to make all the levels nice in post. Most other effects are from the Voicelive 3 pedal if it's a guitar tone or effect. I mostly use the soundtoys plug ins if I'm editing in post and adding a reverb or something in there.

Going down the Zoom H4N Pro route ourselves. The audio from the iPhone XS Max does give a fairly passable recording, but the GoPro's have been very disappointing with their stock mics, and given where they positioned they aren't really contenders for using with externals. Very helpful video anyway, think we have made the right decision for external recorder.

nice! There's a lot of versatility using the H4n, I think you'll dig it, the condenser mic pair is excellent, plus the option to add in two other inputs is super handy for mobile recording. Look forward to hearing the next recordings once you've got it!

@@davidshanhun I am definitely going to try and go down the route of using the stereo pair for ambience and desk recording from the Aux out on the desk. We did a wedding on Friday and I used the Rode VideoMic Pro on my 70D, but as it was at a low height and the dancefloor was rammed so a little variable to say the least. One thing with the Zoom is the placement for best effect when recording a fairly loud band. I think that is probably going to take a few attempts to get right!
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
@@PrettyVegas yeah it works really well. I've recorded a couple of bands this way, and sat the H4n on a mini tripod by the desk actually behind the band, just keeping the gain on the mics pretty low so I didn't peak anything. it's essentially a terrible spot for a live mic, but has actually worked really well once mixed with the raw desk audio and a little EQ'ing! be interested to hear what you come up with though!
@PrettyVegas
@PrettyVegas 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidshanhun Will give that placement a try then. We don't use amps as such, its basically the Line 6 xtLive and a Helix straight into the desk and then backing tracks done in my home studio. Whilst we have a monitor for clicks and a bit of vocals, we don't tend to get a clear sound on stage (we mix at the beginning with me using the G75 wireless), so not sure if that will help or hinder to be honest! To be honest, whatever the placement it is going to be an improvement on the GoPro internals. On the version of Nothing Breaks Like A Heart, the initial 30 seconds is just the GoPro audio before my girlfriend started recording on my iPhone, and because of this I swap the audio over and it is night and day (to my ears anyway), so hopefully the Zoom will be better again. From what I have read the unit is good at automatically detecting levels and adjusting accordingly. Would you suggest this is the way to go?
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
classic - just heard the Nothing Breaks Like a Heart video with the audio switch! Good you had the second option eh? I haven't really used the Zoom this way - but I think it is pretty good at that as you say. I tend to set levels fixed so I know what I'm getting, but have had one or two that I've just killed because of audience plus main mix levels rising massively haha! Something for me to think about using as well perhaps ay.

@davidshanhun

Hi Josh. You personally set the level going into the H4n on the unit, so distortion going in is sadly a user error or lack of understanding on the product. What you described is exactly what i would use the H4n for. A line out of your main mix into the H4n, and the H4n also recording the room using it’s stereo condensor mics. Hi David, I’m looking for an external mic I can add to an iPhone to capture sound while attending a concert at one of our events (www.sidedooraccess.com)... well at least once we get back to irl shows. Which do you think would work better - the Shure MV88 or the Rode mic you showed in your video? I’m trying to capture the best sound I can get without sacrificing mobility - the purpose is to provide an asset back to the musician while maintaining the feel of the small room gig so ideally looking to avoid having something more intrusive like a gimbal setup. (If you know if other gear that might work better, I’m open to that too)
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 4 жыл бұрын
Hi - I'd suggest the MV88 over the rode mic that I mention in this video. There's also the Zoom iQ7 that might be a nice/similar option - amzn.to/2Z6R5Dk - both have an app with a few options to adjust things etc although the MV88 has a dedicated video app which is probably the most useful. One thing to consider is that if you do ever want to use a gimbal with your phone for filming - additional mic's like these will throw off your phone/gimbal balance in most cases beyond what the gimbal can account for. I know you said you aren't using one at the mo etc but just in case. Alternatively - and depending on how much you want to increase your workload - you could use something like a Zoom H1 as a room mic (then you can place it wherever you wish for the best audio rather than just where you're filming from), but this means you'd then have the process of editing each video and syncing the audio etc. The simplest and best option to just make it happen (whilst still getting improved audio compared with just your phones audio) would be the MV88 or iQ7. long reply but hope that helps you!

Heya. Typically this won’t get great results but can work of course, and recording audio with a mic in the audience will usually have quite a bit of general noise. Are you able to record from the bands mixing desk or is this a concert from somebody you don’t know? Best thing is to take it and try so you can see what you get, and then adjust from there. If you can use EQ well after the gig you can often get quite a reasonable mix though! Hope that helps!

Thank you! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I have been using a Zoom H5 with XY attachment, and thought it was pretty good but never 'pro.' Have not really tried hooking into the soundboard. I need to mix them together. And combining that with a mic near the speaker.... I can't wait to try it. Just need to get a mic. What kind do you recommend near the speaker (for a full-size 5 person band)? Should it be large diaphragm? Small? Omni-multi directional or does it matter?
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I use the XY paired mic from the Zoom, and then you can still plug in sound from the desk via the xlr or jack inputs on the Zoom. The Zoom H5 will do everything you need already! I find it's best to put the mic a little further away from any one speaker - you're going for a bit of room/environment for this audio, and even when that audio on it's own can sound pretty awful, mixed with the output from the desk you get a pretty nice outcome most of the time! :)

I have had this same dilemma in the past recording shows for my band. I recorded direct audio out of my Yamaha MG10XU mixer for a 3-hour show and recorded video of the same performance with an iPod Touch that was mounted in a different location to capture the band. I tried mixing the sounds of both recordings together in iMovie and it got so out of whack I had to abandon the project. I ended up just posting the video of the performance with the audio from the iPod Touch since I wanted to capture the sounds of the audience in it. I found the direct audio in was too bland sounding without the live ambience sounds. What can I do about that? I have no idea how to check the sample rate as you suggest David, so if you know how to do that I would love to figure it out! Thanks! :)

Hey David! Thank you so much for the review. Do you have a tutorial on how to connect the wires of the amp to the zoom H4N? I did a live video at church (cover), but sounded like the sample you put on which is not recommended. We do have an amp, mic, and the instruments that go into the amp.
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Daniel, I would simply connect one output from the amp into the H4n, so that you get the exact same sound that the amp is creating, straight into one of the inputs on the H4n. then I would also record the stereo mics at the same time on the H4n and mix them together. Remember though, that you will only get the exact same sound as the amp is making into the H4n, so if you have a really bad sound in the amp, this will get transferred to the H4n also - so just do your best to have everything sound as good as you can live as well :) Feel free to reach out if you have other questions etc :)

Hey James! For what I do I use final cut pro - would air drop my video from phone to a mac and edit from there. Buuuut if you want to do EVERYTHING from your phone, I'd suggest Adobe Rush (can film from in there), and I would use the headphone output of the H4n Pro straight into your phone - then the footage and audio is already synced and you'll have a great sound and video ready to go. I suspect you'll need a trrs cable into your phone, and possibly an adapter from trs to trrs on the zoom end. Hope that's useful for you or at least some ideas to play with!

Hey David, that sounds fairly simple and easy to do. I will have a go at that and see what the results are like. I'm thinking of three inputs for the zoom, the on board mics for room mics, one mix board master line in and one microphone straight to the PA speaker for the live speaker sound and then mixing it crudely in real time on the zoom in 4CH mode. I think it could be quite a sweet live sound for a band live stream. Thanks so much!

@@J.A.Seyforth yeah that could work really well - just a case of setting the input levels on the Zoom to get your best mix. Personally I'd have the room mic not right at the speaker if you've got a line from the mixer - aiming to pick up room ambience rather than another similar line out sound. I would record your main output direct from the desk (full band mix), and then if possible have something capturing room audio. The downside is that whatever your mix on the desk is, will be what you record - but this will usually help you get a better band mix in the process! The other option will be to look at things like the Zoom LiveTrak series that records each individual channel as well as being your live sound desk. (Doesn't have to be zoom, there's plenty of similar options now available - I'm using the L-8, but probably don't need as many channels as you might).

Hi, very insightful video, thanks! I have an additional requirement, not sure how you would approach that. I want to make a multitrack recording of a live performance of a vocalist and myself on guitar. So I want separate audio tracks recorded (going to a Zoom H4n or H6) but I also need the audio of both channels to go to the PA for the room sound. I don't want to record the PA main stereo mix, because that is already mixed and I want to be able to mix it at home in my DAW and have separated tracks for the vocals and the guitar. I guess I could use the line out of the Zoom recorder to go to the PA and then I need to make the room mix with the gain knobs on the Zoom and basically send an already mixed stereo signal to the PA. Is that an advisable thing to do? Signal flow would be: vocals/guitar -> inputs of Zoom H4n -> line out Zoom H4n -> PA
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 2 жыл бұрын
hey Luc - yep you nailed it based on gear and options available to you. It'd mean you only have one signal of both guitar and vox going into your desk->PA so you'd lose some control on the FOH mix etc as you're aware, but if you're ok with that then you'll get the individual tracks you're after for mixing in your DAW later. Only thing would be that you may get issues if you also record the two condenser mic's on the Zoom as they will feed into the FOH mix as well. You could have them at a crazy low level and play around in post if you wanted to include them and that shouldn't be an issue, although you're likely to introduce some sort of phasing. The other thing that actually works although crude if you do want to include some live room sound, is to simply use your phone to record audio from the room. You're only ever going to use a tiny part of this to blend into the mix so the quality is not actually as important. Depends on if you want a total studio sounding recording, or want a slightly more 'it feels like we're there' kind of mix. Fun to experiment with though!

@@davidshanhun Thanks for your reply! Sending the input of the Zoom's condensor mics to FOH is something I didn't think of yet, that is a good remark indeed. And I like the phone recording idea as well. Btw, I don't own a Zoom H4n yet (but I do have a very old Zoom H2), I am in the process of determining the best gear for my requirement. So if you have any additional gear recommendations to meet my requirement, I am also open to that. It strikes me that there is not too much to find on the web about this topic it seems, while I would think that other people will have the same requirements as well.

@@lucbosch You might consider looking at something like the Zoom LiveTrak series, or the Tascam model 12. I'm using the LiveTrak L8 for exactly this purpose. (I had assumed you had an H4n or equivalent). I would recommend the L12 over the L8 for live purposes (the sweepable mid and compressor being the main reasons), but I wanted the portability of the L8. Using the L8 it records the individual tracks to the SD card, and I can mix the sound as suits for the venue without it changing the recording. You can also bring an additional room mic and have it record on it's own channel, but muted to the FOH. Might be a good option for you.

@@davidshanhun I checked the LiveTrak L8 as well and it indeed should do the job. However it is still quite big and I do like the compact form factor of the Zoom H6, you can just toss it in your gigging bag. I have a zoom H4N that I use for my audio recordings and use the built in condenser mics to record performances, but I am trying to get the clean signals additionally, to mix them in with the room recording just like you have. Mixing room noise is really hard when the vocals and guitars are blended. I have a fishman loudbox mini acoustic amp that my vocals and guitar plug directly into ( I saw you have a mixing board behind you). How would I get seperate signals out from my amp into the zoom h4n?( it does have a built in DI out) Or should I some how plug into the H4N up chain --> then have that into my amp? Confused on the sequence and cords to use, if you have suggestions that would be great as this is the only video on the internet I've found with some sort of instruction! Cheers from Canada!
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Etienne, the mixing board you saw behind me has the same options as your Fishman amp - one output with both guitar and vocals in it. So, the trick really is to get a good mix of your vocal and guitar from the amp first (or desk), and then you can blend it with the room sound that you are getting from the condenser mics on the H4n. I'd suggest recording part of a chorus like this before filming, and then listen back briefly on the H4n via the headphone output, and if you need to then adjust your vocal and guitar balance and try again. Once you have a good mix, then you can record your video :) Hope that helps! Where in the world are you?

@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 6 ай бұрын
heya! Are you using the H4n pro for this? Make sure you're watching the level on the metering display while setting your gain so that the peaks are still under max/clipping. Setting the level 'super low' has nothing to do with whether you will clip or not - (not a dig but many people try to set levels based on the number they see etc). 0.2 might be the right gain setting even though it goes up to 100 - all purely based on the level you are sending to it (different outputs will vary massively). The other options are to reduce the level you are sending into the H4n, or you may be clipping and have a distorted sound before it reaches the H4n if you truly are doing all of the above. Often what happens in a case like this is someone isn't watching the levels when they set the gain, or, they set the gain and then play louder, or turn up the signal that also sends to the unit without thinking about it during their set. Hopefully this helps you out or has an a-ha type moment on what might be going on for you - but reach out if you still can't solve it! This stuff can be frustrating til you pinpoint the issue!
