How to record audio at weddings is a topic we've covered before, but in this video I want to show you specifically how I plug into the DJ system.
🚨The best gear for budget, mid and premium wedding filmmaking kits bit.ly/WFSKit 🚨
How to record wedding audio can be a scary topic, and I totally understand that. You are presented with a whole suite of components that aren't necessarily in the wedding videographers wheelhouse and expected to get great results. We have multiple videos on the channel about how to record audio at a wedding but in this video I want to specifically show you how to record board audio and how to plug into a mixer for your audio feed.
There are no real secrets or shortcuts in recording audio from a mixer or recoding audio at weddings in general but sometimes it can be much easier to watch someone plug into a sound board than to describe it. So, I filmed myself going through my standard process when approaching any wedding ceremony or reception audio setup. I talk about exactly what I look for, the advantages and disadvantages to different places you can plug into and the order in which I like to take an audio feed from a dj at a wedding.
Many more tips for wedding filmmakers to come! See you all in the next video!

One rule of thumb I've always gone with is, the further from the mic your recorder is, the more that can go wrong. Of course you always want 2-3 audio sources, but if you can get a voice recorder onto the mic itself (Sony TX650), you'll be further ahead.
@WeddingFilmSchool

I don't mind putting a lav on a mic stand hidden below the mic but I don't love putting something on the mic itself. I've done it plenty of times, don't get me wrong but I feel like I get some handling noise or popping depending on how they hold the mic. In the end though, If you've got an extra recorder it's never gonna hurt to add another source! - Bobby

Super helpful video, Bobby. This is what I wish I had 3 years ago when I started. It would've avoided so many audio mess ups. I find it crazy how many people don't ever plug directly into the receiver! I recently posted a video about this on my instagram story because the DJ had music playing during the speeches. Fortunately, I was plugged into the speaker AND the receiver. The receiver didn't pick up the music :)

Is there something special in the mixer that needs to be activated in order for it to send a signal? I am always confused by male or female xlr. I started by brought wrong xlr connector to the dj and could not record that day. Even to today I still do not know which end should use on dj mixer or speaker. But since now I just bring one cable end at male and another one end at female. So if one is not right just use another one. But I would be happy to figure out which end we should always use.

Shotgun mic is worthless for weddings outside of ambient audio if that is your thing. And the rode is not meant for that type of recording. You need something that can take a feed from the board specifically

Great video man. I've been shooting weddings for years and I always ask the clients to make sure that the DJ has a line out from his soundboard for speeches etc. I have almost never had a good experience plugging into speakers. The feed into the recorder isn't clean and is often distorted/noisy/hot. A sound buddy of mine told me that the signal is looping through not only the board but the actual speaker and it's never a good idea to use it for a clean feed. Just curious if you ever run into this problem.
@WeddingFilmSchool
@WeddingFilmSchool 28 күн бұрын
While I've totally had some messed up feeds I would say it's rare. I would say my go to audio used in over 90% of my films the last 18 years is a feed from the DJ is some way (speaker, sound board, mic receiver, etc). Makes me think it's something on your end.Are you using a recorder that can handle line levels? They are different than mic levels and require the correct recorder or to use an attenuator

@mjsvisualsnz 3 жыл бұрын
Is the back of the speaker a mono output? If you have something like rca to quarter inch would you get audio from one side and then convert to both speakers in post? Or would you try record a stereo track? Also does xlr cable support stereo signal only being the one cable. The confusing part for me is working out when to use stereo cables and when I’ll receive a stereo feed in mono etc. any help would be appreciated.

Also I would say 9/10 DJs want me to plug into their speaker (and I try to talk them out of it, or I put my backup there). @everheartproductions5076
@everheartproductions5076 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely up to you and the decision should be based on how much confidence you have in the feed source, DJ, & speakers. I always tell people that if you have the money, get a Zoom H6, as it records 32bit float and you don't have to touch the gain. Quality is impeccable just about no matter what - refer to Curtis Judd or Gerald Undone for info here on yt.
@WeddingFilmSchool
@WeddingFilmSchool 3 жыл бұрын
So I don't like auto gain, Actually I don't even know if the dr40 has it. I like to use the dual record option on all recorders though. Set the level to be peaking just where you want it and then kinda just be always thinking about each person speaking if there are major changes in volume. Then maybe adjust quick but know that one of the tracks should be usable. Also if you are using a recorder with 32 bit float (not the dr40) then you have way more leeway in post!

Always talk to them… But also. Plenty of DJs don’t know what we need as filmmakers, and that’s not their job either. The last thing I would do is trust another person with the job I was supposed to be doing. Additionally, as someone who has worked in professional sound as well as audio recording there’s literally nothing someone could do to break a DJ equipment by plugging into a line out. A good DJ knows this. - Jay

Weddings are a team game. Sure we all have our responsibilities but if you're not a team player you're not going to make many friends in the industry. Sound board is by far my least favorite place to plug in and in 15 years I have had 1 or 2 DJ's who didn't let me plug in to a better solution. I don't want you to have control of my audio and you don't know how to do my job (just like I don't know how to do yours) so why not work together to make it the best for everyone. If you want to plug my stuff in sure I don't care who plugs it in. 99% of Dj's do not care if I plug it in myself, I'm not going to break it. But you also need to hear me out on why I don't want to plug directly into your board ya know - Bobby
