In this Microlecture, Jason de Wilde shows us how to record an entire drum kit with just a single microphone. The mike technique is called the Tchad Blake method, and using a single cardoid microphone (in this case a Rode K2), Jason is able to record a kit that well-balanced and professional sounding. This video is best heard with headphones on.

I recently recorded my drumset also with 1 mic (sE2200a II) , and placed it above the back of my head, pointing towards the snare. I recorded with cardioid mode, -10dB pad turned on and without bass rolloff. The result was actually that it almost sounded like the kit was mixed with 12 channels.

That's really helpful! I'd like to try that, and was going to ask about the pad and rolloff. How high in the air was it, just above the back of your head? And just tilted down to the snare?

I've just had a go at this. My drums are set up in the garage, so very poor acoustically. I'm using some sort of Bheringer condenser. I am very pleased with the results. I have a much larger kit than the one in the video but I've managed to get a pretty good balance with minimal messing around. I wouldn't use it for a release, but to record ideas and work on stuff to share with the band, it's going to be perfect. Very helpful video!

Hi, yes you would be able to do that with pretty much any mic, but the results will sound different due to the fact that its a different mic. But well worth giving it a try. Hope you enjoyed the video. I've also got my own channel now, with more recording and mixing tips.

I've been using couple of variants of this method with excellent results. Works just like described in this vid. The other one similar to this is the 'crotch mic' method. With a little compression and EQ processing, it can be seasoned to one's own taste. Put it up in the mix, and it'll sound excellent.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess the whole point of this exercise is that it is possible to get a reasonable drum sound from a single mic - great for those that have limited tracks, limited inputs (you could do this on an Mbox mini) and importantly little to no EQ. As soon as you add more than 1 mic, you'll also get phase issues, for example between your overheads and snare. With this single mic method, no phase problems. It's also great for jazz recordings. Cheers. Jason de Wilde.

yeah i've done this before and it generally works for recording (not quite as well for live playing/extended playing cause the balance of the head will be thrown off). also, i read in a drum magazine a few years ago that an engineer gave this same tip to the drummer for rage against the machine.

my method was going to be to put it in front of the kick striking head at the top pointing up at the snare and cymbals thus gaining some thwack element from the beater contact. It's close enough to the mounted toms to pick them up too - but as far as the floor tom goes - just hit it hard!

Hi, glad you gave this a try, and I understand what you are saying about the cymbals. What you could try is a little bit of EQ boost at around 12KHz and above. I find that it adds a little bit more "air" in the overall sound. Also, I've (finally) got my own channel now which you may want to check out for more info on recording etc, Cheers. Jason

Only if done skillfully, and only if the style allows it. There have been incredible recordings made throughout history that have used barely any mics, and no doubt a whole host of terrible, amateur recordings that have used loads of improperly placed mics. It's all in the quality of the drums, the quality of the drummer, and engineer's abilities!

Just a quick note - at lower frequencies (such as the kick drum), most cardiod mics behave like omnidirectional mics (due to the principles of diffraction). And then there's the proximity effect to consider. Impressive.

Is there a way of placing a condenser mic to record the drums that exact method shown in this video but without having to remove the tom to place the mic in that location? I would like to record but hate having the second tom removed to fit in the location as seen in this video. Some songs I need the tom that is in that location but also need the mic there... Hi there, this is Jason de Wilde here. The small problem with using a D112 is that it's a dynamic mic, and that means it will most likely miss out on some of the "air" or high frequency sounds. You'd notice this in the cymbals particularly, and it would just lack something. Certainly, if you have nothing else, it would be worth giving it go. It certainly would produce a hefty kick and snare. Cheers. Jase

I've tried it with 2 rack toms as well. I kept it in the same place as the video above, and it was still pretty well balanced. You could try moving it back a little bit in order to pick up more of the rack and floor, but you should listen for any lost definition of the kick/snare. Make sense? Cheers from Jase
@jasondewilde
@jasondewilde 12 жыл бұрын
I did not use any compression on that video, but it's certainly possible to use. I did try it on a recording I did later, and it gave the drums a pretty cool trashy sound which was OK for the context. I'm generally not a huge fan of compressed drums. If I do compress them, I'll parrallel compress them so that there is a mixture of uncompressed and compressed.
