How to RECORD & EDIT Screaming METAL VOCALS Like a PRO

Күн бұрынIn today's heavy vocal recording tutorial, I go over the process professional engineers use to record, layer and edit metal vocals given modern production expectations of metal, deathcore, death metal and djent. While I am using Ableton Live 11 for this scream recording lesson, these techniques work in every DAW and are sure to leave you with a amazing results. Recorded on a 7 string guitar, the deathcore song was written using ChatGPT for lyrics so strap yourself in for some interesting tips and techniques, from preamp to your headphones.

Looking forward to it!! I'm running an sm7b into a Scarlett 2i2, would you let a vocal hit the yellow on an interface like that as well? Or save that technique for something with a "better" pre amp (ik the Scarlett is fine for my purposes haha), I've been arguing with myself over that for years!

The scarlet has decent conversion but the pres aren’t amazing so I would hit yellow on peaks but I would not live in the yellow like I do on my UAD. Stick with green and hit yellow at max and then add your colour in the plugins and saturation.

@@BrendonKPadjasek O man, if you ever wanted to give it a shot, you totally got it, your music is rad and trailers especially tend toward standard 4 chord progressions so not much is needed theorywise. Having the right tools helps as usual....I became a sample library collector in the process lol...IDK if it's helpful for you or anyone that might read this, but Keepforest has some great free to use instruments/samples to test the waters...would recommend Ferrum for hits and there is a very robust full use version Devastator: Warzone that is rad (free version for non-commercial use)! At minimum they are some very good and useful tools to add some production to tracks!

Thank you so much! I tried to cut it down to as little as possible without losing any information so I'm glad it helped. I would say with your set up, definitely don't push that interface as, to my knowledge at least, the pres are not great on there. Do most of your shaping in the box and I'd even be weary of hitting the yellow on there. Which plugins do you run for vocals?

@@BrendonKPadjasek Makes sense. It doesn't even have a yellow light. haha Only green or red. For plugins I'm usually using an assortment of Waves plugins, Fab Filter plugins, and JST stuff. Still learning how to produce, so I don't have a go-to signal chain, yet. Thanks for the tips!

@BrendonKPadjasek I actually love the thing personally! I do have a small amount of treatment in my home studio, but the eyeball definitely gives me a dryer, more isolated vocal. Ya, it's a bit expensive, but it was worth it for me. Better then trying to diy somthing.

Do you think a secondary mic would pick up anything useable for a vocal? Kind of how you use a room mic for drums.

When I record more singing oriented vocalists, I'll do my dub vocals by stepping away from the mic and it makes them pop like crazy. Totally different eq curve, and having the room sound puts the vocals in a different place automatically

Brendon, would you agree than an sm7b/cloud lifter would suffice for vocals in a metal mix. Or any better options you may suggest to have the best result going in to working a project.

Honestly I don’t even know if you need the cloud lifter now never use one. Just the SM7b for all of my heavy vocal work. Structures included

Thanks for the video, I have an SM7B connected directly to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, I want to record something like Linkin Park, rap and screams. It sounds very low and I needed to put a compressor as a plug-in to increase the volume of the recording, what do you think?

I’d say 100%. Also distortion/ saturation goes a long way in making vocals sound better. Which DAW and plugins do you plan on using?

@@BrendonKPadjasek I am using fl, When I scream I can easily reach 6 dB without even saturating or putting in any plugging, but when rapping I only reach 12 dB, do you think I should use a compressor to increase the volume of my voice before recording it? (I know fl is not the best for this genre)

@@BrendonKPadjasek I'm the same way with struggling to put it into words. I started learning to scream listening to Northlane Singularity so my lows are pretty similar to Adrian's but I could never master his highs with the pitch. My voice cracks like I'm 15 again. I can do the like goblin type highs that Chris Motionless does lol but when I try to add pitch everything goes to shit. Maybe I'm trying to force it with the wrong technique idk

Yeah it’s a very different vocal style. I suck at the typical “lows” mine just sound like my mid scream but lower so it must be a vocal technique thing. Cause pitch screaming came naturally to me. It just requires learning at least a bit of singing technique to hit pitches that you want to hear. I’m still not a great singer but the lessons definitely went a long way

I like your workflow, not often you find producers user Ableton for metal! I wanted to ask your opinion on recorded audio being auto warped. I recorded vocals for the first time yesterday and ran into an issue with vocals over a gradual tempo change. I couldn't work out what was causing the glitchy artefacts in the vocal clip until I realised it was being warped on the fly. I was wondering if you have ever ran into this problem?

Eh thank you very much! Yeah I wish there was a "turn off auto warp" function. There is for importing audio but not recording. I would just turn warp off. Usually I will hold shift, and select all the vocals and then double click on the wave form, while still having them all selected, and turn warp off for all the clips. And then IF I need to warp something I just turn it back on. That or I change the algorithm to Complex instead of Beats

I'm using a Shure SM58 with a Pop filter going into my Behringer UMC1820 interface going into Reaper with the plugin Chain of Waves NS1, FabFilter Pro MB, Waves Scheps 73 and JST Howard Benson Vocals

Definitely stay low volume going into the behringer. Everything else is a great call , I would definitely put the Scheps 73 first, then either ns1 or JST Benson last. What are you using the MB for?

@@DonnyBartoo Okay cool that makes sense, i would in that case throw the MB as the first plugin, then the 73 to get that tone, and then throw another MB at the end of your chain to calm to down the esses even more. I find referencing my mixes on iphone headphone or cheap ones really bring out the issues in my mixes

@@DonnyBartoo No worries, try that out and let me know what works for you. When I'm mixing bands and different vocal styles I play around with which eqs go before which compressors. I generally have 3-4 eqs and 2-3 compressors of some sort

Oh that’s sick. It’s hard to tell without hearing the vocals. The mic and the vocalist will really dictate which frequencies need to be cut/ boosted

Thankk for checking it out! I'd 100% go SM7B and I have a carpet on the ground as ell as quite a few acoustic panels along my walls. But even if you only make a few acoustic panels it'll make a huge difference. How big is your room?

@@jyoutube1233 Yeah not too much needed. If you'd like, you could even build 3 acoustic panels and create a box where you mic lives. It'll have basically no reflections. I prefer the acoustic panels on the wall to make my whole room better treated

Not bad. I’ve used the at2020 before. Probable the Rode is better for screaming, although I haven’t used it before. I’m assuming it’s built to be similar to an SM7B

I dont know if your still giving recommendations, but im using an SM 58 with a pop filter, into a cheap ass behringer Uphoria UM-2. Then my chain in reaper in this order is headcrusher audio assult, JST Gain Reduction deluxe, stock reaper reverb, stock reaper delay, then stock reaper eq. If you have any recommendations for moving the chain around or even new plugin or interface recommendations, that would be awesome

Interesting. Personally I would suggest upgrading the mic to an SM7b if you’re looking to upgrade anything. The sm58 doesn’t capture screaming vocals very well in my experience. If that’s too much I’d suggest throwing a DSer before any compression and then throwing one at the end of the chain as well. That way you control the sibilance before and after just to make sure you’re grabbing those harsh sibilance. And I personally would put any EQ before the compressor. Soothe is also a great plugin for controlling some of those harsh frequencies

@Tyson_Guitars I haven’t personally used the Lewitt, but I would say keep working with what you have and save up to get an SM7b. It’ll be worth the upgrade and be a large step up rather than getting another more budget mic. You can still make the sm58 work, for instance Rage Against The Machine recorded vocals for their first album with it and it sounds great. They just have a lot of honk to it, so even if you just remove whatever mid frequencies that are the problem, before compressing, you’ll be in a better position

Our vocal rig isn’t much right now. It’s just the Focusrite 2i2 and a SM7b. Also: using Presonus as the DAW.

That’s all you really need. I unfortunately don’t have any experience with Presonus. Do you like it? As long as you don’t clip on your focusrite you’ll be good. Their conversion is actually pretty decent. Do you have any saturation plugins?

@@BrendonKPadjasek I love Presonus. I will say it’s the only one I have experience with though but have never felt the need to switch to anything different. I have a few. Mainly use Soundtoys Decapitator and Escalator (Black Salt Audio).

Yeah decapitator is my go to for vocal distortion. Do you use it on your parallels? If you’re comfortable with your DAW and you can do everything you want to easily in it, theres no reason to switch

Thank you! I love the northlane guys as a band and as people. Had the most fun playing in that band and Im so glad to see they’re killing it still. Definitely try it as a parallel for vocals, as well as a parallel for kick , snare , and Toms. Make a parallel track for each to bring more snack out of the drums

scarlet solo, sm58, dirt broke using anything i can get for free or for "free". OTT, ReaEQ, Gain Reduction, ReaGate, Sidewidener, ValhallaSupermassive. My issue is how i cannot seem to get my vocals to not sound lofi-ish. Seems to work ok for my Darko Us covers but the metalcore stuff needs a more delicate touch and i have no clue how to get this sounding beefy but not compressed to fuck. seems like any reductions i make to compression make it inaudible. not tracking it very hot at all, doesnt clip. my vocals are stupid loud usually so im careful to not record with the mic too sensitive. Thank you brother!

A lot of tone also comes from auxiliary tracks / sends with a lot of distortion on them. Keeping your vocals clean but the sends heavily distorted. And then blending them into the original track

Honestly i havent done any vocal recording yet. I'm using a focusrite and recording into cakewalk. Haven't done much for amps, fx, etc

@@albinp4927 ahhh I’m unfortunately not too familiar with it but if there’s a stock saturation plugin I would try throwing that on first in your chain and try adding the slightest bit of saturation to emulate what a hi end preamp would be doing

No problem! I love all of the free legacy plugins from UAD. SSL Legacy- Ln76 is a great starting point. Teletronix La-2a is also great as a finishing compressor. I personally bought the distressor plugin for screaming vocals and it’s my favourite. Don’t be afraid to compress more than you think. Attack and release should both be pretty quick for vocals but play around with it

Not a professional here. I have a decent Shure dynamic microphone pop filter and have recorded music for years... But for the life of me I can never seem to get my vocals where I want them. Because of my inexperience, I always struggle to get clear vocals that sound silky smooth but without killing all of the highs so that everything comes through crisp and clear without shrieking with s's and sounding ear piercing. I cannot for the life of me get a decent mix that I'm happy with. Musically speaking I can always get my tracks to sound full and Rich... I don't know if it's just the kind of microphone I'm using or it's just that I don't know how to mix metal slash fry scream vocals well. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

My favourite trick is for that end of things is, soothe for general frequency near the end of my chain, cutting all the sibilance on the wave form and lowering just the hard sibilance “s, b, p, v, c, etc” type of sounds. That way your compression doesn’t hit those as hard. Also a de-esser at the beginning of your chain

@@BrendonKPadjasek yeah... Maybe it's just because I'm super picky with my vocals. Sometimes I'll even compare it to other metal albums and other professionally done mixes... I'm thinking, wow there's so much more clarity with mine... The bass is crushing this mix from Underoath (or whoever it is).... Or maybe it's because I have a higher pitched fry scream so I struggle to wrangle in the highs without losing clarity....not entirely sure.

yeah, what are the odds? 🤩 the thing is i had spent literal hours searching for bands that have truly emotional and 'painful' screams (as opposed to the man-or-beast?-screams) and the Structures EP was exactly(!) that. i love Knocked Loose (favourite band) and The Plot in You but I'm in a phase in which I feel the need for something truly 'painfully' raw. and then as i heard it i thought to myself: 'could i channel all the negative energy into music myself?' and just googled music writing, chanced upon your videos and your vocal editing and voilà. 😂🎉 so much coincidence... it might be a sign for me to start something that's intrigued and also scared me for so long😎😱 and i also want to say thank you for sharing all this and also for the heartfelt music. it's truly healing ❤️🩹
