Thank you SO much for this video! I have been really struggling to get my tracks converted to digital from my fostex 4 track. All new stuff for me, and you gave such a straightforward and clear description. Super appreciate it 🌟

I hoped there would be more detail here. You are transferring from a Tascam 424 like me. What are the settings on the 424 to get 4 outputs? Which faders are controlling the output levels of each track? I've tried many things, and I'd hoped your video would actually explain the detail to transfer using the 424. Any clarification would help.

good video! bit of a long question but I wondered if you had any advice on this. I recorded a song on my DAW and wanted to experiment with using tapes with a cd player / cassette tape recorder . my idea was to put each individual stem/instrument (with a 4 click count in at the start of each track) on to cd, play the cd, press record on the tape player until all the stems were recorded to tape. so then i used the headphones out on the tape player, hooked it back up to my DAW, played the tape back and hit record on my DAW. There was one problem I into, when attempting to line the (tape recorded stems) up with the original(DAW recorded stems) I noticed the tape stems played back slightly slower and began to veer off noticeably. If i bought a tascam four track and tried to do the same thing, would i be likely to run into this same problem? do all cassette machines playback slightly slower than a digital recording? :-)

Okay! Here’s my issue! I have songs on the EXACT same Roland 8 track you have except it’s a 12 track (at 1:55). How do I get those tracks onto my laptop so I can send the demo to the rest of the guys in my band online? It would be a tremendous help, I know this video is a bit old, but help!!😁 (I don’t have a laptop with an input I think....)

So lets say i have a complete song done from my daw, and i want to add that analog sound from lets say a tascam, how do i load one whole song into it then load it back to the computer with the processed sound from the recorder?

Hey Landon, I’m currently beginning a project and I want to use my Fostex Model 280. I’ve never really been able to figure the thing out are there aren’t a ton of resources that I’ve found online. If you have time, I’m wondering if you think it’s worth it to record digitally, record the whole track to the fostex, and re-record it to the computer, or try to record to the fostex first and then go into the computer track by track? I’m new to this and the gain stages are a bit overwhelming. Thanks!
@teddy3k33 ай бұрын
In both of these scenarios, you would be using the Fostex as some kind of effect or outboard gear. The first one, PC>Fostex>PC, is a pretty easy use for it. It makes a 1 man band easier to manage as you can edit the sample before it goes into the Fostex. The second one, Fostex>PC, is a bit more difficult. You would only want to do this if you wanted to print the sound to tape first, in which case, you cannot edit anything after it's printed. You would have to rerecord it. Also keep in mind, if you do EITHER of these, that the playback of the tape will NOT be the same every time, so you will have timing issues. Once you print to tape, you'll have to edit the audio or use it as your foundation.

Hey mate! I do this quite regularly using my tascam 464 and my zoom r24! I find that when its sounding awesome on the 4 track, bouncing out the 4 individual tracks loses that 'cassette' vibe pretty badly, but still sounds pretty alright on the on the zoom, but then once its on the computer, it sounds awful. Its lost all that cassette glue that ties everything together. Do you find this to be true? Is there ways around it. Something about the digital stages is killing the vibe, but its so handy to get more tracks and do things that I couldnt on the 4 track. Would love to know your thoughts.
@magicspiral33233 жыл бұрын
My thought on that is this - focus on writing great songs because in the end nobody cares about the glue you used to put it together.
@jackcrook44353 жыл бұрын
@@magicspiral3323 Thanks man - The songwriting is the definitely my first and most important order of business. But I'm just curious if you have any tips how to to bounce 4 individual tracks while maintaining the feel of stereo mix bounce...

@magicspiral33233 жыл бұрын
@@jackcrook4435 I don’t know. I’ve thus far only mixed down in stereo when using a four track, but when using my eight track Tascam 238 or 688, I didn’t have any issues with the sound when I bounced and mixed the individual tracks to the computer because I had the sound I wanted from the tape to begin with.

Hi, I have about 10 cassettes done on a 4-track but no longer have it -am I better off looking for someone to convert to digital, or should I just get a standard cassette deck and go through my interface to PC? It's original music so I want the best quality reasonable. Thank you!
@magicspiral33232 жыл бұрын
You need a four track to play the tapes properly. You might spend the same amount on a machine as you would for someone to do it for you.
@realkhranyewest46272 жыл бұрын
Would it make a big difference in sound if i recorded every track for itself into a 2input interface, do it for all the 4 tracks and then play them together as seperate tracks in my DAW?
@jonvincentmusic Жыл бұрын
Extremely unlikely they would stay in sync. You must record them to you DAW simultaneously.

Nope. I typically have only used mastering plugins.

I have that EXACT Tascam 4 track. I’m trying to transfer all 4 tracks individually. Do you know of a PCI card or a reasonably priced interface I could use. High quality recording isn’t a priority because most recordings are 30 years old. I’m just trying to preserve the recordings digitally before the tape completely deteriorates. Please help. Anyone! Thanks.

Scarlett 4i4 audio interface is good. You’ll need four RCA to 1/4 inch cables.

Connect the four track to a tape deck. Put a blank tape in the tape deck. Record. Enjoy.

How can i digitize all tracks separately from my 424 Portastudio straight to my DAW (I have a 2i2 Focusrite)?
@teddy3k33 ай бұрын
Scarlett 2i2 would only be able to get you a stereo mix cuz there are only 2 inputs. You cannot just rewind then play the tape again otherwise it'll be out of sync

I'm trying to hook my Fostex X-24 to my AI and I can't seem to get a signal. I'm not sure I have the right cables? Super new to this. I have the 4 tape outs... They require RCA cables. But since RCA is always L/R do I have to plug in both, then to tape out 1/2 for example? I'm so confused 😕
@magicspiral33232 жыл бұрын
RCA isn’t allocated to left and right. In this case, the four tape outs bypass the mixer section and send the direct signal from the tape out to the interface. RCA to 1/4” is likely going to be used, but you’ll need four of them for each tape track.

what about the other way around,taking digital files and recording them to tape.
@magicspiral33233 жыл бұрын
Excellent inquiry. That’s a common practice in studios. If you want the benefit and flexibility of working within a DAW, but want an authentic tape sound, that’s a great method. Think of the tape as an outboard processor.
