I've dealt with CFS / Fibro / POTS for about 5 years and at the worst stage, I was completely bedridden unable to even turn over in bed. At one point I was bedridden for eight months straight unable to walk and luckily came across a doctor who was able to help me fully recover back to 100% and feel even healthier physically and mentally than before I got sick.
In this video, I talk about the science of my recovery and share the different tips and strategies that helped me go from being unable to even feed myself at times to hiking up a mountain in Hawaii 12 months later.

Thank you so much for mentioning that medication was also a part of your recovery story. I’ve finally had to except that for the time being Clonezapam is necessary to get me some sleep. I have developed severe hypnic jerks that make it literally impossible to sleep without medication. It’s been an absolute life saver! I have been researching many of the brain rewiring programs and thus far you are the first to be transparent about this. I’m grateful because that alone takes so much pressure off of me thinking that I was doing something wrong. These medications are demonized so often yet I feel they can be extremely helpful along with doing the work. I really needed this reassurance today, thank you!

hi miguel, i saw you on raelan's interview, so glad to have found your story. i'm both geeky and holistic, intrigued by neuroplasticity long before i became ill so i knew all the parts in play but haven't seen them click into place quite like this. i'm 7+ years in with me/cfs, housebound and frequently bedridden. i've read all the trauma, brain and somatics books and have worked several nervous system programs but was still declining. after years of chasing every rabbit hole and adding more stress by doing it full throttle and aggressively hunting things down, i hit rock bottom this year - my body was shutting down, nervous system totally borked and my innate determined optimism was gone. it somehow led to a sort of acceptance instead of being at battle. renewed hope in a gentler and kinder way. i've enrolled in a cfs recovery program (my way of asking for help, doing things differently and easing up on the lone wolf nature) and i'm starting to feel tiny shifts, mentally and nervous system for now, hoping it will trickle down to the physical level eventually. even though i'm still alone and housebound i'm enjoying my tiny life and having fun again! gently, gently, being recovery focused instead of illness focused (which is a tricky bitch to balance when you do have a few physical issues that need actual attention). thank you miguel and i'm SO glad you made it out the other side of this and are sharing your story and your thoughts!

Thank you. I am an older woman, retirement age and endured a lot of abuse, mistreatment and stress. My living environment leaves a lot to be desired and a lot to be grateful about. When I heard other women talk about psychsomatic symptoms, I thought it was nuts because I did have physical injuries. The way you have explained how the brain works and forms grooves and paths from our thought patterns makes total sense. I know that's true but wasn't applying it but now....Thank you for adding how changing thoughts works wonders too. It all makes more sense both in the physical and spiritual realms. ❤😊❤

Great content over the disease of CFS. Battling with CFS myself for about 6 years now I’ve discovered most of what you explained as a way to treatment (not cure) the controlling beast of CFS. It really is something you have to approach from every aspect, you must change your mentality of everything you do. The way you feel about people or situations, your emotions must be positive to keep the anxiety at ease, the way you control your exercise, the way you eat, the music you listen to. All things must keep your body at peace and maintain that adrenaline level so you do go backwards or so you don’t experience symptoms. I hope people who are suffering can submit and sacrifice by changing their life around.
@cfsrecovery

That's right. You really just have to retrain the nervous system so that it's not hypersensitive. And you can definitely cure this, not just control the beast of CFS.

Miguel, you are a treasure and an enormous public service to the CFS community! I am wondering if you have had the opportunity to speak with your doctor about why he understood what he did and how he recognized it in you when this is such a extremely rare occurrence in our doctors? What does or did your doctor specialize in to have this specialized level of understanding? It would be enormously beneficial for the two of you to do a interview/chat to be shared to help educate other doctors.

Probably TCM knowledge - to the Chinese medicine such illnesses are nothing new. In our western world we have the tendency with medicine to disregard the mind/body connection…leading to doctors screening things that are not to screen as they are triggered through mind / body imbalances…

I am going to rewatch tomorrow and take some notes as I learn better when I put pen to paper. It’s how I get my daughter to learn her spellings quickly and easily. Writing them out by hand. Wow Miguel! Thank you for this great video! It resonates a lot with me. I have other underlying stressors, but I am pretty sure that your model is correct. It is exactly what I figured out and I really like your visualisations. They are so helpful, cause when im down I can't think clear and the better a visualization is, the more it can help in hard times. It think in a lot of people there are toxins the stressors and the insufficiency to get rid of them + a lot of "normal" stress and a few years later -> cfs. I also like your image of the glowing brain from another video with the cooling effect when you breath out. Like a hot soup. It helped me so much in the last days and immediately calmed my brain. There was a guy called John Sarno and he had a comparable view at chroinc back pain. He said the underlying cause are supressed emotions and he cured a lot of people. I think one has to find the personal stressors and has to eleminate them as good as possible. What I suppose is that in the moment of the first cfs breakout, the sensitivity of the threshold also is set down (to stay at your vis) and bam you feel like shxt and it is not enough to just do a few things, no, you have to go way under you thresholds to recover. Hard to do, but that's the way. Thanks a lot and all the best for you!
@cfsrecovery
@cfsrecovery 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, absolutely you hit the nail on the head with everything you've said. And I'm very happy that brain retraining exercise has been helping! That exercise has helped so many people dealing with chronic pain it seemed too good to be true, I didn't actually think it would work until I tried it haha. What you said about the sensitivity threshold is so true, our tolerance is almost non-existent when we're in a crash. Once we do get out of a crash, we need to build that "cushion" for our threshold to give our body space to heal. I break it down in an upcoming video, t's like treading water. Our body can't tread water forever it will get tired, but if we get out of the water we actually give our body an opportunity to rest. Similar to CFS, we need to build enough cushion so we're not "just below" our threshold, we need enough cushion that our bodies aren't "on the edge".

@36:45 YOU NEED TO CHALLENGE EVERY EPISODE OF [SYMPTOMS] WITH ALTERNATIVE STIMULUS OF SIMILAR OR GREATER STIMULATION [unlike acute pain, which is your body sending a message to your brain] chronic pain is learned over time which is a huge thing here now if you think about it with your symptoms they're also all chronic symptoms now at least for me you know i always thought my heart was gonna explode or you know my lungs were gonna stop and i'll stop breathing BUT REALLY THAT WASN'T MY LUNGS SENDING A SIGNAL TO MY BRAIN, THAT WAS MY BRAIN SENDING A SIGNAL TO MY BODY BECAUSE MY BRAIN WAS SO STRESSED IT WAS SENDING ALL THESE DANGER SIGNALS, THESE FALSE SIGNALS like a glitch in a computer to my body so there was no real heart issue right there was no real lung issue there was no real um you know other there was no real you know organ failure that i thought it was going through it was my brain sending these false signals these false warnings to my body because it thinks it was in danger so what you have to do is when you do have chronic pain YOU NEED TO CHALLENGE EVERY EPISODE OF [SYMPTOMS] WITH ALTERNATIVE STIMULUS OF SIMILAR OR GREATER STIMULATION and that's something that came straight out of the book the brain that changes itself

@@cfsrecovery aw thanks for replying. Making great progress. I was never formally diagnosed with anything...after extensive testing and scans the docs found nothing and I was supposedly perfectly healthy. But I researched and researched and based on my disparate symptoms I thought: it's either CFS and/or fibro. Funnily enough I saw a medical medium here in Australia last year and without me telling her a thing she said fibro. So..I've been on the brain training path and tonifying my vagus nerve and doing things like meditation and breathwork. But brain training is a game changer... becoming aware of my moment to moment thoughts and checking my emotional response to my symptoms, has helped so much. I'm not 100% but well on my way. How are you these days? Did you do a formal brain training program?

Much respect for making the effort for outreach. Many of us have spent years without much reason to be hopeful. I'm almost 10 yrs. in w/ classic me/cfs symptoms. I'm wondering if you can relate to the non-replenishing sleep issue. My symptoms improve somewhat throughout the day but after a night's sleep, I am just trashed. Is there anything that you've done prior to sleeping that minimized this? Or was your sleep experience different?
@cfsrecovery
@cfsrecovery 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely. I can totally relate to that, whenever I was bedridden my sleep quality would be like one hour and 10, I woke up feeling like I never actually slept. Even on days where I would sleep for 14 to 16 hours I was even more green when I woke up and then it’s just a negative cycle. Horrible sleep = horrible day = frustration = more insomnia and low quality of sleep and repeat. For me the medication really knocked me out of that cycle and actually allowed my body to go to sleep. It’s tough because I literally tried everything else, Epsom salt baths, blackout curtains, drinking magnesium before sleeping, meditating, shutting off electronics at sunset, really nothing was working until I got in an anti anxiety and antidepressant. Keep in mind those are TEMPORARY medications, in my situation their purpose was to allow my body to actually get rest. I’ll make a video breaking this down more.

Miguel. I cannot believe how lucky you got to have received help from conventional doctors. That is honestly mind blowing to me lol! So I was extremely unlucky until I was lucky lol. That's a tricky situation you're in. It's highly likely that yes you were experience severe anxiety (at least your brain was), but most doctors don't look into the reasons why our bodies feel that way. There's always a cause and effect, so if anxiety is one of the things you're feeling, you need to figure out what's causing it. That's what I teach on this channel and in the Recovery Jumpstart Program

Thanks for this very useful video. While they were building up and recognizing the signs of increasing anxiety levels, were you without the aid of anti-anxiety medication? I’m interested in what your opinion is or experience was as it relates to the use of anti-anxiety meds.
@cfsrecovery
@cfsrecovery Жыл бұрын
Yes I was without the aid of anti-anxiety medication when I was getting worse and worse. They actually gave me antianxiety medication but whenever I took it, it actually gave me more anxiety because I didn't like the feeling of not being in control. It's only when I learn the concepts of how to recover that the antianxiety medication became effective, and I use the medication in conjunction with brain retraining in order to dig myself out of the hole. But I also asked my doctor if it was possible to recover without medication, and he said for most people it is. But in my extreme situation, I needed it to even get the ball rolling in my recovery. Most people don't need medication though, especially if they can walk around already and are somewhat functional, it's much better long-term to focus more on the brain retraining neuralplasticity approach than to rely on medication to get out of this.

Hi Alexander. I thought I replied to this but I guess I didn't! To put simply, essentially the body has a threshold for stress, when you have a virus it wreaks havoc on the immune system and this puts a ton of stress on the body, which puts you over your stress threshold. I was never clinically diagnosed with pots as I only did the test once and the time I did do it the symptoms decided they were going to show up that day. Although I've experienced horrible parts symptoms like my heart rate jumping to 130 and staying there for hours after simply getting out of bed and going to the washroom.
@booksinbed
@booksinbed Жыл бұрын
@@cfsrecovery Was your experience that your heart rate shot up when you got up and stayed high for hours afterward, *even though you returned to a resting position*? If so, I wonder if there was a different cause for your tachycardia, which might explain why POTS didn't show up on your test. In the diagnostic criteria for POTS, the orthostatic intolerance symptoms show "rapid improvement upon return to a supine position". Typically in POTS your heart rate responds to your posture - racing when up, slowing when reclined. If you experienced tachycardia without postural relief, it sounds very tough.

Hi J.C. The answer is no, those issues require different treatments. If there's something actually detectable on tests then you must follow those treatment protocols first. The approach I teach is specifically if there's nothing that 100% without a doubt clearly explains the symptoms that you're feeling and people are turned away by all the doctors / specialists they've met. @cfsrecovery
@cfsrecovery Жыл бұрын
There are tons of things that trigger people to get CFS, a viral infection is something that I've seen come up a lot in the last year, especially with Covid and everyone's immune systems being down. They call it post viral chronic fatigue, but as long as the doctors have ruled everything out, and they have treated the virus, and they say you're good to go, all the principles I teach on my channel should work. What happens is the stress from the virus pushes you over your stress threshold, but even after the virus is gone, your body is left in a hyper sensitive state. So essentially, we need to retrain it to shift back to its default "balanced mode" so it functions normally again, vs. being stuck in sympathetic overload with tons of neurological symptoms. I think the somatic symptoms caused my nervous system to go into such a bad downward spiral my body literally lost it's sense of baseline. My nervous system was just going haywire. I have EDS,POTS and fibromyalgia. I have physical symptoms that have no relation to anxiety. Whilst there is a correlation between anxiety and physical symptoms for some people. It can’t be assumed it is a cause of all the conditions you list. In my case it is not. Eds is genetic, fibromyalgia from traumatic child birth operation, pots (a fault in my autonomic system linked to EDS) where I was diagnosed on a tilt table test after passing out. Anxiety did not cause me to faint on the tile table. Being upright and my blood pooling caused it. It takes a lot to battle against people assuming symptoms are all in your head when you have invisible conditions. I think we have to be careful when linking mental health symptoms the cause of physical symptoms. Whilst I can help my symptoms through various protocols like physical therapy . I cannot cure them. mental health symptoms such as anxiety has the potential to be cured for some people

This makes so much sense - however what is a bit.. I don't know, discouraging or what ever is, I didn't really have anxiety before CFS. And I don't have anxiety for the most part with CFS either. I think it can be counted on one hand how many anxiety attacks I have had in the past 4 years.. So.. I feel like the anxiety loop doesn't really apply for me, and then I'm like okay.. Like it happens every once in a while that a thought comes up like "what if I don't get better" - but I would say 90% of the time, I am able to rewire that thought after a quick cry 🙈 I have had anxiety before, like years ago - and that was BAD. I don't feel like I have the same experience now.

Anxiety is sneaky. Ask yourself how often during the day do you think about your symptoms? How much time do you spend looking at videos and googling about it? This is stress on the nervous system that most people don't consider. If you didn't have any concern over your symptoms you wouldn't have watched the video... thus thing feeds itself if you let it and you won't even realize it.

Different for everyone i guess. I have fibromyalgya and very severe cfs. But im not stressed or anxious. My eyes always hurt and half closed due to the severe fatigue. I can barely stand on myself at 31 years old. I tried anti depressant but after a week i stopped as not much pain improvement and being more a zombie. i wake up tired no matter what. Plus trinitus and many shit in my body. No mind trick gonna make me normal again. I keep trying things to get better. So far only keto diet gave me 30% less pain. Sadly still extreme fatigue. Deep inside i feel something like fight mode is on. So no matter how much i sleep my body wont relax. Next steep is massive B1 ammount that i ordered. I eat as much as i want. I have a loving gf. I cant do much more to get better. I need to "unlock" something physicaly stuck. I just have to keep trying différents things and hope something will work.

Hey Pitivier. That sounds rough man. I wouldn't say "no mind trick is gonna make me normal again" though. That kind of thinking will keep you from getting better, and I know it seems impossible but never count yourself out from things that may help you. I know you said you're not stressed or anxious, but you also said that your body won't relax / you feel like fight mode is on. Have you listened / read the book "The brain's way of healing" ? Because in that book they talk about people who lived with pain for 10+ years and recovered with the brain exercise. If you have listened to it, have you tried the brain retraining exercise? The one thing I completely disagree with is that once the panic attack hits you have no control. Definitely untrue. Before I started with limbic training I learned control through deep breathing or limbic breathing and visualisations. Both of these can bring your body back into a state of calm. It helped me immensely. The lie that anxiety tells you is that you don't have control, which is not true. It's all a limbic system trick and it can be rewired.
@cfsrecovery
@cfsrecovery 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that you can definitely bring your body back into a state of calm. What I'm trying to say is if people let the anxiety get to the point of a panic attack, they will no longer be in control when that panic attack hits. Could be 5 seconds, could be 30 seconds, could be a full minute. But when that adrenaline dumps in your body and your heart is pumping, and your fight or flight mode is triggered to the max, then there's literally nothing you can do except wait out that wave of panic and adrenaline. Afterwards, you can definitely calm you system down by doing the things you mention.
@metalphobos3632
@metalphobos3632 2 жыл бұрын
But that's not the same as being out of control or not having control. The feeling makes you think you're out of control, when actually you do have control. Yes, the feeling is overwhelming, but its a lie. You're actually in full control, you just have to know how to shift the brain loop. Remember, this is all limbic. You proved it yourself. Its a false message and nothing more. BTW, glad you recovered. Its great to see. Im doing retraining myself.

Hi. No, anxiety was not the underlying issue. The real underlying issues were all the stressors that I was putting on my body which then led to anxiety and anxiety then led to symptoms. But people with MS have sensitive nervous system too, yet it isn't panic disorder. Dunno man. I'm glad you've got your life back and I'm envious for sure too, but I don't think you can bundle up all these together. If that would work, people would be getting better left and right. Even your positive reaction to ADs (I'm glad they helped) but that's really not what most people with CFS experience. ADs usually don't make any major difference in their symptoms, even though they might help calming down the NS. I speak from experience

@@cfsrecovery When you say panic disorder, somatic dysfunction, ME/CFS are the same - do you actually mean it or was that written in haste? With covid and long covid (PACS) research has been intensified in finding the cause and come quite much further lately. It’s quite unanimous that retroviruses has got a _Great_ deal to it. HERV-K, EBV, Herpes - at least one have been seen to be present in all cases. Let alone all the gut imbalances where bacterias are missing that should be there to hinder inflammation in the brain and the neurological system, along with even a faulty gene that has been seen missing in 100% of all ME/CFS patients, but not in control groups. And the antibodies that attaches itself to the blood vessel’s walls, hindering them to contract - basically causing POTS. There’s a _plethora_ of imbalances which none of them can be attributed to anxiety. They may be worsened by it, but you tend to focus quite a lot on primarily anxiety as a root cause and not another symptom. Whether I you meant it as such or not I do not know. But if that’s the case, I think you’re doing ME/CFS a humongous disservice. Now, I don’t know - as I wrote above - perhaps this was written in haste and wasn’t intended as such. I agree with the different stressors on the body and where it at one point goes overboard. For me - that’s just another symptom and stressor. But in the case of ME/CFS, anxiety is not the root cause nor is it the same whatsoever. I just wanted to make that clear.

I would argue the missing link here is childhood trauma. What was perceived as a child will still hold as an adult. An adult will react to life as he/she did as a child until and unless there is either deep self awareness or some other type of long term intervention. And then there’s the “shame” issue which will create symptoms later in life as an adult for seemingly no apparent reason. Welcome to my world!
