Did you computer crash? Windows failing to boot? Computer hardware failure? Afraid you will loose all of your precious pictures and data? Don't panic! This video shows step by step how you can try to save your data using a second computer and a USB - SATA / IDE adaptor to down load you data. Many times the hard drive does not mechanically fail, and it is only a corruption of the operating system, or a computer hardware failure. If this is in fact the case, your data can be saved by transferring it to another computer, by using special adapter cables that converts your crashed hard drive into an external USB hard drive that can be read on a another operating computer. This video shows step by step how to do this data saving procedure.

I got a marvelously simple adapter for less than ten bucks on e-bay. It uses two USB ports for both power and data. The problem is that while the hard drive out of my totally crashed Toshiba laptop is still just fine and opens ok, Toshiba seems to have some kind of proprietary file system that buries the document and data libraries in some sort of program data files so I can't find them. I've tried to down load a couple of "free" data mining programs, but you still have to pay for a lot of the data after they find it for you. My question is this: In the past, working with desktops, I have just replaced the desktop hard drive with the one I want to recover data from. If the OS is intact the box just boots up on the new drive. However, I know that laptops often contain a lot pf proprietary programming. I have a HP laptop on order and I was wondering if it would hurt to just swap out the HP hard drive for the Toshiba without harming the HP?

I have transplanted hard drives to a different laptop computer before, when the computer itself had a hard ward failure... It will work if the computer is almost identical.. It seems that windows loads drivers for a specific laptop, and if those are not exactly the hardware of the new computer, those devices will not work right... also the way windows is, they don't give an install disc, and I'm not sure how to get the proprietary drivers.. but.. I did find a trick though... for instance I swapped the HD from a fail HP laptop, with an almost identical part number HP, and the wifi drivers were not right for the new machine... so I took the wifi out of the old computer and put it in the new one and then it work fine then.. best of luck with that project..

Thanks. I was far too dilitory about backing up the old Toshiba and so will probably have to do a bit of work to get my documents and data back. Just have to keep at it. All I really worry about is damaging the new laptop. I just want it to come up enough to move my files to a thumb drive.

I have a HP laptop with a hard drive 1 (301) failure. I ignored it stupidly and now my laptop won’t boot up. Does this sound like the type of issue you’re referring to in this video that I may potentially be able to retrieve data? Through the little research I have done there aren’t many other sources suggesting this action so I’m skeptical to try it.
@jaynesnetwork
@jaynesnetwork 5 жыл бұрын
I guess this is something on the newer hard drives that is supposed to warn you as soon as the hard drive starts to fail, to give you time to recover your data. You should not try booting the system any more.. this may further damage the drive.. You either should remove it immediately and try to recover data ASAP, like I show in this video.. or if you don't feel comfortable doing that.. take it to a local professional that is capable of recovering your data.. Yes this process can retrieve you data, assuming the hard disc is functioning properly still. When the hard drive starts to fail.. the more you use it, the more it can degrade, so time on and running, is an issue.. basically you should retrieve your data ASAP with as little drive on-time as possible.. if it is not too late.. Best of luck..

My HP Pavilion 20 All-in-One died, so I bought a USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE kit. The cables look just like you have in the video, so I plugged everything the way you showed into my new PC, also an HP, but a tower. I don't know if I was supposed to plug the USB into the front of the PC, there's 2 ports there, but I did and nothing happened, except that the hard drive I'm trying to get the data off of got hot and started to smell; the power supply box got hot too, so I panicked and unplugged everything. I'm guessing I did something wrong, I wish I could attach pictures of what I did and what I have. Please can you help! I have tons of pictures and files I want to get off that hard drive, which itself is fairly new, about 8 months old as the original one was replaced.

For reference my mother spilled water on my laptop and i was not notified until about a week ago because of finals, which i fear may have killed the hard drive altogether; I got to the last step at 12:25 but my hard drive keeps popping in and out of the computer (my laptop will detect for 5 seconds and then randomly say E:/ drive not found and I end up not being able to copy any of the files on Users. Additionally, when i try to access the files on the hard drive to check on Users, it says "you do not have permission to access these files ...", I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'm taking it to a repair shop to see if they can do something but I've had this hard drive/old laptop for 7 yrs and all of the files there are extremely significant. Any help if u can provide would be greatly appreciated.

If it is due to the water... I 'm not sure what to do about that?? I know loose bearing can cause an issues like this.. and if you put the drive in the freezer for a while.. that will shrink the bearings, and allow you to read for a little while... maybe a frost free freezer might suck the water out?? but water can cause whiskers to grow internally shoring out things?? it could be that the write head is going bad?? If this is the case.. the more you try to read, the worse things will get.. you should try to recover things as time efficient as possible.. if you are able to read.. and don't leave the hard drive hooked up when not actively trying to read.. this will cause it to wear out sooner.. if it is a head issue.. maybe you could try photorec, if nothing else is working?? Best of luck! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLKFo62Av9O2dac.html

My laptop lost connection out of nowhere. The error message said “err_ethernet_disconnected” and I followed a KZfaq tutorial to try and fix it. The tutorial said to go into system configuration and disable all services. My computer said it needed to restart after that. Once the login screen came back up after restarting, I typed in my password and it didn’t let me log in saying “incorrect username or password” I cannot log in and would really like to be able to get back in and recover my pictures/documents. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you!

Are you running windows? If you pull the hard drive, like I show in my video, you should be able to read it on another machine.... Unless you specially configure your data to be encrypted (which almost no one does... You would know it if you did, it is a difficult process) then almost 100% you should be able to read your data as an external hard drive on another working computer.. The pass word is only to prevent you from logging on, and should not prevent you from reading your data as I show in this video... try it, and keep me updated. It sound like your hard drive is working fine, and should be no problem recovering all data... it may be possible to fix the pass word issue as well..

Hi...what if u have more partitions on ur hard drive..how to open other partitions on the other laptop?
@jaynesnetwork
@jaynesnetwork 6 жыл бұрын
I believe they should be mounted as usual. Normally a different letter is assigned to each partition. When you access the drive this way, the computer sees it as a normal external hard drive, so unless the partition tables are corrupted or something, I believe it should be a very straight forward process of copying the data from the crashed disc to the new computer's hard drive.. If there are lost files or major corruption of the HD, it is possible to recover them too.. Even if they have been deleted. I have a video on this, but that is a much more complex process. Best to try the easy stuff first though..

Can a hard drive that may have gotten wet be recovered? Laptop got wet not sure if hard drive did. Took off cover and took out hard drive the hard drive itself seemed dry.
@jaynesnetwork
@jaynesnetwork 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe Better let things dry out very good before putting electricity on anything. If anything is wet, it can do even more damage and burn out circuits, by shoring them out. I would let it dry for a week at least before attempting to put power on it. If the hard drive itself is dry, them maybe you can attempt to recover in another computer? It should probably work,... provided the initial wet computer did not short out the hard drive circuits in the hard drive itself. Definitely try it on a good working computer... Best of luck. Let us know how it works out.. Thanks..

well, there is a secret trick that repair shops dont use to recover data with only the installation media step 1: press shift+f10 (shift+fn+f10 if your computer has a fn button) step 2: type notepad step 3: go to file > open step 4: in the side click on this PC step 5: show all files from the dropdown step 6: try transferring a file or folder in a drive to external storage (you can transfer multiple files or folders) and view data after reinstslling Windows pros: make it full screen by getting it to the max height of screen cons: IT SADLY DOESN'T WORK, WHAT A SH*T METHOD!

Hi You may have saved me from a great loss but I am not sure. My problem is this: I had a 32 bit desktop computer whose power pack blew out. I had to buy a new computer in hurry and was forced to allow someone else to do that for me because of the circumstances I was in. They bought a 64bit HP computer for £500. (£200 too much in my opinion) I was horrified to find that when I got to see this computer the M/Board only had one SATA plug on it. I had hoped I could hook up the drive from the old computer, copy the files across I need and all would be well. Do you think adapters like yours would help? Or, do you know of any adapters that would solve any incompatibility issues between 32 bit and 64 bit drives? I am in the UK and finding help here for this is proving difficult but I would happily have something shipped if I had to.
@jaynesnetwork
@jaynesnetwork 6 жыл бұрын
My adapter converts both SATA and IDE for use on USB. If you get an adapter that is compatible with your drive it should work. The number of bits is more of a processor thing.. It shouldn't affect the kind of hard drive format you have.. A hard drive from a 32bit computer is basically the same as one from 64 bit, so it should work.. best of luck.

Your situation seems pretty ideal and straightforward... but I'm afraid I have a worse one... I need to recover data and have one of those USB converter (Kingwin) things... but it does not make my 3.5 IDE come alive. I get the blue light, and the Laptop recognizes the drive, but the drive doesn't spin up (does spin freely), no clicks, it is silent... It asks me to "please insert a disc"... also, it thinks it has 0b used, and 0b free... of 20.4GB. I tried the fix for the Insert Disc, and everything my Google-fu could find. I noted that you mentioned Linux, so I think maybe you know a few additional tricks given the apparent File Structure being incompatible with Win10... This is an ooooooollld Win98se Master. LKG... ~2005-6 Drive Specs: Maxtor N256 / 20.4GB DiamondMax VL 40 5400 RPM (3.5 IDE) According to various recovery tools - it's in FAT16, and I am guessing that is why my new Win10 machine can't even with it... I have tried the basic Drive letter and such. No dice... none of the standard Recovery Tools work, and the drive has no value other than the data, so I don't want to Format it. I made a USB Persistent Bootable Ubuntu... was hoping maybe a Linux OS could read it.

Is the hard drive questionable? If you have one that you know is good, I would test that with the cables to verify your cables are working properly, and that you are getting power to the hard drive and everything. If you verify that the connection is OK, then It is possible that the hard drive has a mechanical failure. There are many different ways the HD can mechanically fail, most can not be fixed. A common way is that the bearings are too loose now. if this happens to be the case, sometimes if you stick the HD in the freezer for a while, the coldness will shrink the bearings enough that they will work for a short period of time. before you try this, make sure you can connect with a known good hard drive with your external cables. It could could also be a software/driver issue with your computer? Although, I didn't have any issues with mine, BTW what OS are you running?

Hi The cable that you need is USB on one end, i.e. plugs in to your USB port, and probably SATA on the other end. It is an adapter cable and is both, one to the other... It is also possible to recover files without the cables, if you have a working desk top computer. I also made a video of how to do that if you are interested. Try putting the hard drive in the freezer.. and leave it there for several hours.. then try quickly reading the data while it is cold! sometimes this works.. because many hard drive fail when their bearing become loose from wear and tear... the coldness will temporarily shrink these bearings, and allow you to read data from the drive.. for a little while, until the drive warms up again! it is worth a shot..

There are two parts to files on disc, 1. a list of their locations, and 2. the actual data. When you format the HD, you erase the list, but most likely the data is still intact. As the new OS runs, it will slowly overwrite this data, making it impossible to retrieve.. if you want to try to save some of this remaining data, you need to shut down this computer, and pull the HD and try to read it on another computer. Every minuter you let the new OS run, it is overwriting old data. Since you formatted the disk, you can not read the data normally, and you will need to use a recovery program like Photorec. I have a video below on Photorec, which may be able to retrieve some of your old data, if you like to try.. best of luck. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLKFo62Av9O2dac.html

I believe the power cable is a separate cable that has a little power supply that plugs into the wall, and the other cable goes to USB on my computer. I know there was a little power switch somewhere on the cable to turn the power on, on mine, and it wasn't completely obvious at first. You definitely need power to the disc or it will not work. Yes you should definitely try to recover any data you can. I know that stuff is irreplaceable, and a lot of the 'big box' computer-help places just want to reformat, to get your computer working, of course that will loose all your data. When it is working, it should have some notification that says there is a new device connected I believe. Did you purchase a kit like what I was using? It is possible to plug it into the power supply of another computer as well. I would recommend shutting off the computer nicely before and after disconnecting if you try this. You don't want to do something to mess up more things. Try not to hot plug devices if you can help it. Hope this helps a little..

Are you able to see the hard disc on the computer when you plug it in? Maybe it is having issues reading the data? I had a hard drive that had problems reading the data, and it was because the bearing were loose. I tried putting the HD in the freezer to shrink the bearings a little, and then tried reading it.. If that is the issue, this sometimes helps..
