Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva travels to Pittsburgh to replace a bi-fold closet door with one that is more appropriate for the house
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Time: 6-8 hours
Cost: $800
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Replacing a Closet Door:
Drill
Miter saw
Level
Measuring tape
Screwdriver
Shopping List:
Pre-hung door
Reproduction door hardware
2x4 studs
Framing screws
Shims
Steps:
1. Start by removing the old door from the closet opening.
2. Measure the width of the door opening and order a door that size or smaller, to make it easier.
3. Cut the 2x4 studs to length and then secure them to the sides of the door opening using framing screws and the drill. Use additional 2x4s or rip down additional stock as needed until the opening is roughly 2” wider than the width of the door.
4. Check the opening for level at the top and plumb on both sides. If it’s slightly off plumb on the sides, that can be corrected with shims.
5. To make sure the header stays level, hold the level at about eye level and make two reference marks on both sides of the rough opening.
6. Measure from the reference mark to the header on both sides of the opening. Transfer the measurement of the shorter side to both sides of the jamb on the pre-hung door. This will make the door level.
7. To get the correct height for the jamb, measure from the reference lines on the rough opening down to the floor on both sides. Then, measure from the reference line on the jamb to the bottom of the jamb. If the jamb is longer than the measurement from the opening, it will need to be cut.
8. Cut the jamb to length based on the reference measurements.
9. The door may also need to be cut down slightly to allow the door to swing properly.
10. Remove the door from the jamb.
11. Hold the jamb into the rough opening and line up the reference marks from the jamb and the rough opening. Be sure that the edge of the jamb is flush with the face of the wall.
12. Slide shims behind the door jamb on the hinge side so that it has a roughly even gap as the other side of the jamb.
13. Predrill some holes in the jamb and the rough opening. Then, secure the jamb to the opening with framing screws.
14. Hold the level against the edge of the jamb just screwed into the opening. Once the level is plumb, pull the jamb out as much as necessary to meet the level, add shims behind the jamb to hold it in that position, and screw it into the rough opening the same way as before.
15. Rehang the door in the jamb to check how it swings before securing the rest of the jamb.
16. Secure the striker side of the jamb to the rough opening using the same method.
17. To even out the gap between the door and the jamb, add shims to the middle of each side of the gap between the jamb and the rough opening. This should push the jamb inwards, closer to the door. Secure those shims with screws.
18. Install the reproduction door hardware to the door using a screwdriver and the pieces that come with the hardware.
19. Add a door casing to the outside of the door frame to give it a finished look.
Resources:
The 5 raised panel pre-hung door Tom installed is manufactured by JB Sash & Door (www.jbsash.com/). The reproduction hardware Tom used is a Putnam Classic Interior Door Knob set in oil-rubbed bronze, manufactured by Rejuvenation (www.rejuvenation.com/).

Ok i see that the whole measuring and cutting part just went over some people's heads so I broke down what he did. The door doesn't fit in the hole and we need to see where to cut it so that it sits level and operates perfectly. He measures the opening ABOVE the line OPENING: L SIDE=19-5/8 R SIDE=19-15/16 He goes with 19-5/8 because its the smaller measurement which he transfers to both sides of the new door. The difference will leave an uneven gap around the door but we can cover it up with trim. here's the tricky part Measuring DOWN OPENING: L SIDE=60-3/8 R SIDE= 61-1/8 the right side is longer by 3/4 he checks the new door, measuring DOWN NEW DOOR L SIDE= 61-1/8 R SIDE=61-1/8 RIGHT SIDE of new DOOR will fit just fine but the LEFT SIDE doesn't match the LEFT SIDE of the OPENING so we need to cut it by 3/4

when the opening is so unlevel , in this case 3/4", I always cut the door so when it's closed the space is equal across. the way Tom did it, he will have a larger space on the latch side than the hinge side. use at least 1 long screw into the framing on each hinge leaf too as those prehung screws are very short... and you have a heavy door

What I always do these days after shimming and squaring is to put in low volume expanding foam (specifically for doors and windows) in the gaps between the frame and the rough opening I know some will say “waste of time” or “that’s a waste” - but trust me, if you do it the door becomes so solid and when the door closes it feels much more expensive. It also spreads the load from the screws Try it 🙂

it revolves around the level reference line drawn, and doing measurements off that to determine how much to cut off the higher sitting jamb, so the door frame sits level on the floor.. there are other ways to do it, such as sticking the frame in and shiimming it level, then measuring the gap on the shimmed side and cutting it off the other leg. his way is less labour intensive though.
@ab348
@ab348 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisburns5691 I know from reading @DrPepperJunior 's comment below as to why he did it this way. The floor was 3/4" lower on the right than the left edge. The top of the opening was slightly out of level as well. But having watched this video at least a half-dozen times I still can't understand Tom's rationale. He just did not explain it in a way that made any sense to me. The upward measurement he made just seemed to get ignored. The downward measurement revealed the 3/4" variance of the floor. Couldn't he have just measured the sides of the opening and the new jamb and figured it out much more easily?

burns bullshit. Was not countersink for fill. Not that hard to professional. Just because it's a closet doesn't make sloppy ok.

@brianohbrian burns using a countersink and actually sinking the screw are two different things. I am aware that there are more than one way to do things that's why I offered more than one solution. Keep defending sloppy work. I'll keep making money fixing your mistakes.
