How to reduce Thermal Throttling of your Dell XPS 15 laptop

My Dell XPS 15 7590 was throttling a lot under heavy load, especially due to the high temperature.
So here are the three steps I took to reduce it.
1. Under-volt
You can under-volt your CPU to reduce the generated heat. Download the Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility from this link if you have an Intel processor.
downloadcenter.intel.com/down...
2. A better cooling pad
I bought this amazing cooling pad/fan which gives a lot of cool air to the laptop ventilation system.
Buy from Amazon DE: amzn.to/3biah40
3. Re-apply thermal paste
WARNING ⚠ : Do this at your own risk!
Buy Arctic MX-4
Amazon DE: amzn.to/3bi6UtU
Amazon UK: amzn.to/3bqYjVS
Amazon US: amzn.to/2RMqbMk
Amazon CA: amzn.to/3anuoN4
These three steps to help my laptop to cool down a lot!
If nothing works, there are two options.
1. Reset the laptop (Windows) or re-install Windows.
This will fix any software issues or malware trouble if there were any.
2. Get rid of it :D
Just sell your desktop and buy a better one ;)

Can't believe this actually worked! My XPS 15 9500 was constantly running with fans on - even on idle. And temps were always around 59 C°. I used a brush and PC duster spray to clean all the dust from the fans and then used alcoholic wipes (from the drugstore!) to clear and renew the thermal paste. I also bought those Blue thermal stickers because I thought you had added them yourself but apparently those come with the laptop already so I just left them untouched. I put the thermal paste in an 'X' shape because I saw somewhere that this gives the best distribution. Now I've turned the laptop back on and so far the fans haven't turned on even once and coretemp is reporting around 41 - 42 C° - that's a huge difference! Thanks

When I applied the thermal paste I actually spread it across the CPU and GPU with a Q tip and then put the hewtsi k on. I didn't do it like you did. And I also used Coolermaster Thermal Paste... I installed the 970 Evo Plus 1tb today because I was having issues with the stock Toshiba ssd, and there is no difference at all with the Samsung ssd.... 😮

Good video. But one information is missing. I want to buy some thermal pads. What is the recommended thickness. They seem to have them in different sizes, from 0.5 up to 4.5mm thickness. Or should we recover the ones that came with the laptop? What about the one that is used for the SSD? What thickness?

The biggest thing you can do is undervolt the Dell using a tool like Throttlestop. Clean the fan and you can repaste if you like. I turn off turbo and undervolt with my 9560 and it helps. The VRMs are the biggest problem.

During the re-assembly you applied the heatsink not correct, the VRM heatsink needs to go underneath. You placed it on top of the white stripe.

Yep I updated all drivers, bios etc. Reset bios settings. The only thing that worked was when I used throttle stop program and disabled BD_PROC HOT Then my clock speed was normal. But everytime I turn on laptop from shutdown /close the throttle stop program, it resets itself and gets stuck at 0.78Ghz! Annoying!
@GnomezGrave
@GnomezGrave 4 жыл бұрын
Can you try these steps. 1. Shut down 2. unplugg/remove the battery 3. wait for some time, 1 minute in my case 4. reconnect/ reinsert battery 5. start machine again 6. see the cpu running at normal speed again. Ref: superuser.com/questions/1241844/cpu-is-stuck-at-its-minimal-frequency

I have the precision 5530 and it s just the same device of xps. Everything is same exept the cpu. Mine one has a zeon processor and I tried every poisbble way to keep it under 80 degrees and no way. if you want booth performans and the no fan noise. İt is imposible. When you disable hyper trheading or turbo boast, it s then becoming a normal laptop can not even play 4k 60hz video without fan noise again. Even there would be lag or freeze on the video when it is fullscreen. So I ask to myself, If I need to make it slower not to make it go extreemly hot, why did not I buy a regular half a price laptop. I know you are telling me that this much amount of problem need formatting and clean fresh installing. but no. Still my device is getting hot like an oven. Somethimes I can not put my hands on it to type something. I also have themal camera pictures. I called the service to solve this thermal issue, nop. They act like they are not facing this problem. But I know all of their unit has the same problem. They have engineering fault on this device. And they are talking about thermal efficiency in their new device advirtisement. Thats why I am posting this same comment to every single dell thermal issue video. I will definitlt not buy dell product anymore. No way. Not to my company anymore.
@GnomezGrave
@GnomezGrave 3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree on what you mentioned. These steps are merely to "reduce" the over-heating, but they don't fix the issue. If someone already have this laptop and wants to reduce it, these steps might be helpful. However, for anyone willing to buy a Dell XPS, I would recommend not to because of this.

@rondhole
@rondhole 3 жыл бұрын
@@GnomezGrave you are so polite about my bad language. Your repasting is actually fine as long as you put enough and drop the heat sink straight. The only issue I saw is you touching the RAM heat-pad with bare fingers instead of the glove, the oil from the skin can reduce the heat transfer but RAM is not that demanding on heat. XPS15 7590 with highend specs has really good VRM cooling integrated on the heat sink, but the lower and mid-end do not have it. So, overall when you run both CPU and GPU hard at the same time, it will still throttle down from VRM/CMOS chip high temperature.

Thanks a lot for the explanation. I will keep this in mind for the next time. I probably have to do it again it seems anyway, because sometimes it becomes like a jet engine. Overall, I find the thermal management in Dell is not good either. Will probably move out of it anyway.
