These 2 Settings Could Be Overheating Your New Dell XPS Laptop

My video editor and I found 2 settings in the BIOS of my New Dell XPS 17 laptop that were causing a couple of my CPU cores to overheat (reaching to 100° C). In this video I walk you through how to fix it.
TL;DR
Make these changes in BIOS Settings (BIOS settings button is F2 key on laptop startup):
1. Power - Battery Configuration
Change: Adaptive - Primarily AC Use (only if you use your laptop primarily plugged in most of the time, which I think is the best way to preserve your battery, but NOT IF ITS BEING DRAINED LIKE ON ADAPTIVE MODE)
2. Performance - Intel Turbo Boost Technology and/or Intel Turbo Boost Maximum Technology 3.0
Change: On - Off (I believe this is the primary one that was overheating my PC)
Also, I teach people how to code 😀 Want me to mentor you? You can click my links below:

@@zackplauche I can only say "haha"😅 to those who saying it's suboptimal. As impact of those settings is so horrible that laptop nearly useless under good/high workload tasks, everything just lagging and stuttering, as well as it causing constant cpu heating even under moderate and low workloads which resulting to only fan noise.

Thank you so much. I've read through tons of forums, read solutions from users and employees of Dell about various nonsense that could possibly help. The issue is obviously(!) the Turbo Boost tech and shows that it wasn't tested properly. My laptop started overheating and draining during during my work tasks and once I've switchd Turbo Boost off in BIOS, the fans basically stopped being audible, temp went down and it's working perfectly fine now as it should. When I find the time, I'll destroy those forums and will spread this video as much as I can. Great job!

@@zackplauche I have a better solution, you're better off customizing your battery setting in Windows to Battery Saver, then change the monitor off and sleep times. Setting to Battery Saver also disables Turbo, but it gives you the ability to easily turn Turbo back on, without having to go into BIOS to turn it back on. Disabling Turbo reduces your performance by 1/2, so it would be better to have a way to re-enable it when needed, whiteout booting into BIOS.

So I'm not a super big computer expert (I'm a developer that just happen to have this problem and resolve it). From my understanding, this setting just makes it to where when it is plugged in, the power isn't cycling through your battery, and your computer is receiving it's power ONLY through the charger. It still charges, and performs the same when it's not plugged in. I've had this for more than a year now and it works perfectly fine.

You just crippled a great Laptop to half its power, by turning off its Turbo Boost. This is not the right way to reduce heat. Instead, use the program "ThrottleStop" to limit the TPL-Wattage, giving your CPU still room to breathe. "Undervolting" would be even better, but your BIOS probably doesn´t support that. Just go down to 25W or 30W at PL1 and PL2 in ThrottleStop (XPS9710).

@coolmemesbudd
@coolmemesbudd Жыл бұрын
@@salehin85 The answer is likely no. Turbo boost gives a boost when needed; visualize it as strong pushes in power to get over a bump. Turning it off means that it can no longer provide any explosive work. With it off the laptop would just settle with more consistent work over longer periods of time to do whatever it is doing rather than hitting heavy in shorter bursts. In either case, the laptop does the same amount of work, it would likely be warm regardless of choice. The turbo just happens to be more convenient for hiccups and time. The solution would be to say decrease the amount of work the laptop does in totality, or increase the efficiency at which it works.

That's how the computer is supposed to work. Unless you have an absolutely stunning cooling solution (spoiler alert, none of the XPS models do), the CPU is designed to go as fast and as hot as it can. It's not going to damage it, as it will reduce clocks as necessary to stay right at the threshold. This solution is fine if you don't want a hot computer, but you are in fact killing performance.

Not sure this advice is good for everyone. And you are not making it clear to the user they are trading performance for lower temps. The other way to address this is to keep performance and find a way to improve cooling... or to setup modes that are difference when using as a workstation plugged in vs a mobile unit on battery. Not everyone will want to give up performance. One could use liquid metal for better heat transfer on the CPU and GPU... add additional thermal pads to the MOSFET so they touch the case and it is used as a head sink and can add a cooling pad to blow more cool air in the right places... or have the fan pull the hot air away.

Yeah I'd say if you're buying a laptop exclusively for gaming there are better options, but I game on mine and it runs perfectly fine with those settings. I keep mine elevated so there's space for the vent to breathe.

Disabling turbo boost goes double if you have an i9 version, you definitely don't need it on.
