In this video, I bring new life to a tired, old oak dining table that had been discarded. I repair a broken leg, remove the old finish, sand, stain, paint, and apply polyurethane. If you've ever considered refinishing an old piece of furniture, this video will help!

Holy table Batman! I think this is my exact oak table. I bought it unfinished 20 years ago and finished it with poly (or something similar) and have used it every day since. It's been great. The leaf mechanism has broken though, one of the cogs is jammed . I'm preparing to downsize and will sell or donate it. It looks identical.

It seems like EVERYONE has owned this table or lived in a house with it at some point. I bet you could fix that cog pretty easily.

@@jessesmithchannel Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm aging a bit and can't work underneath or safely turn it over to figure it out. Thus the downsizing, and plans to move to an apartment. It's OK, I live in the woods with lots of wildlife, coyotes, bears, raccoons, turkeys, rats etc. I'm ready to be in a less challenging situation. Want a twin back up table? Nice job refinishing yours.

At first I thought the mocha was entirely too dark, but it came out a good brown, not the orange undertone. It cover all those stripes or minimized them. If you wanted to give this a hand rubbed finish, you could buff with a very fine steel wool and then use a paste wax, like Johnson's paste wax. Can't prove it but the wax helps safeguard against water marks, and adds a nice sheen. Great job.

Thanks! I do like a good hand rubbed finish, but I've already hit this one with multiple coats of triple-thick polyurethane.
@rockshot100
@rockshot100 Жыл бұрын
@@jessesmithchannel It will still look hand rubbed, I only use poly, then very light rub with fine steel wool, and then finish with the wax. It will work. I do it all the time. There is a very slight difference, but you will notice the feel and sheen. Thanks for a great vid.

Thank you for the tutorial! I need advice about the top coat. I’ve applied one coat, now do I need to sand with 220 and apply another top coat? Repeat as necessary?? I’m using the same poly as you did.

Never considered taking a table apart to work on the tabletop on my hands and knees. I imagine it is easier to scrape and sand a tabletop when it's at table height. But I've never tried it on the floor so what do I know.
