Thank you, it's a very useful tip! I don't know if you know about another useful thing with regard to onions, which I discovered by accident. That is to make a potent, very nutritious liquid plant feed from the water that you used to rinse an onion with. During a time of severe water restrictions my family and I began to collect waste water to use it for the garden. We put a small plastic tub in the sink and transferred water from that into plastic buckets. We also rinsed onions under the tap before chopping it up. In this way the little bit of moisture at the cut ends ("onion juice") ended up in the buckets, mixed with the water we used to rinse the onions. After a while we noticed that if the water in the buckets were left to stand for a while, it became more and more smelly. Natural sciences are not my strong suit, but somewhere I read that fresh onion tends to attract microbes or bacteria from the surrounding environment. It certainly seems that something mysterious happened when we left water that had even a little bit of onion juice in it standing overnight. The water became more and more smelly and cloudy, and plants thrived on it, they were so clearly revitalized. Since then we've been using it regularly, since we eat onions with practically every meal. At the moment we are considering utilizing it on a larger scale so that more plants could benefit. It helps that we've never cleaned the buckets -- it creates the ideal "breeding" environment for the onion water microbes. The smellier the water becomes, the more nutritious it seems to be. It's no use dropping actual onion pieces into the bucket -- that just creates a particularly revolting smell without noticeably affecting the water it is floating in. It's the juice (even just a tiny bit of it) that is able to turn the entire bucketful of water into potent liquid plant feed. Wishing you all the best!!

I have half of a red onion thriving in the darkness of my crisper drawer. I’ve left it there as a bit of an experiment. Time to split it up and plant it in my garden.

You can do this with the bottom/base of your celery and romaine too. They grow like crazy!!

Great video.. I’m giving it a go myself.. by the way, if you use narrow jars like the ones with herbs and spices you can just sit the onion base on the top without having to use the sticks to suspend it

I have an onion end that I'm going to put in water today!!!! Thank you for sharing this! I've wondered if they will grow if you just stick them in the soil, but I guess its better to go with the water first and then soil!!!!

That's great I'm glad it inspired you to try it. I think it could possibly work, the only problem would be if it rots or dries out before the roots establish. A full onion definitely would, it's just a big bulb after all, but not having the full skin for protection might cause problems. Maybe I'll give it a go in the future!

Sooo where does the onion bulbs come from? Through the roots? or you have to cut the green top when it grows and plant that to grow the onions?
@derekhehn13214 ай бұрын
I’ve started about a dozen onions this way but none of them have developed bulbs, even 6 months on. Rich green stalks and extensive roots but no bulbs. Any comments or suggestions here?

They did grow bulbs the next year but not as big as normal ones. It’s handy for getting loads of seeds at least!

How did the onion turn out? I have a onion that’s going on it’s own and wondered if I could cut down into sections since it’s a large onion
@GrowIt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tina, it's still going! It's just started growing again now after winter. It looks like it's growing three or four plants so I'm considering splitting it, but I might grow another one to test that incase it doesnt work. You could definitely try cutting it into sections as long as each part has roots and a stem it should work.

How do u keep the vegetable fro rotting and keeping the maggots out?? I tried growing a broccoli shooting and it rotted and Flys layed maggots ugh 😑
@GrowIt2 жыл бұрын
As long as the plant is alive it won’t rot, so as long as you grow roots before planting like with the onion it will be fine. Unfortunately broccoli is the flower of the plant and it’s a lot more difficult to try and grow as it doesn’t have the parts needed to regrow already there.

What do you mean wait a few weeks to feed it? Feed it what?
@GrowIt7 ай бұрын
After it’s started to grow after a few weeks it helps to start feeding it with a general plant food every now and then, it didn’t need a lot.

Better to let the plant flower and then use the seeds to make new onion plants. You'll get full size onions in a few months instead of years

@ellenorbjornsdottir1166 Жыл бұрын
This method creates second year onions. Those generally set seed. The correct thing to do then is to collect the seeds and plant them.
