How To Remove A Dead Freewheel With Basic Tools

In this video, I run through the process I like to use when I need to quickly and easily remove a worn or damaged freewheel with either no removal tool interface, stripped or damaged interface, or I don't have the correct tool. This method will generally result of destruction of the freewheel.

That was an excellent 3 and half minutes of my life! Thanks for the great video. My extremely stuck and also dead SS freewheel is off, and the wheel is ready for a new one.

Just the video I needed to see on exactly the same freehub. I don't have a bench vice and struggled to get it off until I finally realized that now with all the external components removed it showed some exposed notches that my traditional park tool external notch cog/hub removal tool & a hammer did the trick.

It depends on if the fixed gear cog is on an actual fixed gear hub or a standard freewheel hub. On a fixed gear hub, the outer portion where the locking is located has a smaller diameter threaded section, with backward threads, you'll need a locking spanner that matches the diameter/and or notches in the locking. a punch and a hammer will work in a pinch, but you'll turn it clockwise to loosen. A chain whip turning counterclockwise will loosen the actual cog after the locking has been removed. On a freewheel hub, both need to be turned counterclockwise to remove. If you can't identify the difference between these types, take it to a good bike shop. The cost for them to remove/reinstall the cog you want will be worth it.

1:38 the consistent thing above the divots.. mine got no divots... 🤨what's plan b. Cuz I got a flat head and a ball ping hammer. It's 9:49pm. And I'm about to puss off mom, grandpa and the neighbor til this thing breaks free😅
