Some people in the comments said leeches aren't common in the USA which is wrong. Maybe in the state they live, but many states have a diverse and abundant population of leeches. I'm from Louisiana and leeches are very common. Obviously in swamps it is terrible, but even in forested areas, shallow water and lakes can be a prime area for them. The lake near me that many people swim at, surrounded by a drier national forest, has tons of them. Seems like every time I've gone, someone has a few on them.

Maybe you do a video about ticks, because the tick seasons begins, unfortunatley. It's always good to raise the awareness. :)

Great Video! Very useful information. Might be a good idea to make one just like it but about Ticks... also very common and rather unpleasant for most I would think.

Pushing through a couple of Km of wet overgrown track last Friday near Toolangi ended up with so many leeches that I lost count, mostly was able to just flick them off BUT ended up with one on the eyeball. After a few careful attempts to scrape it off in the end decided to leave it for a while. Anyway after about 30min it had swelled enough to scrape off. Checked in with my optometrist next morning, no damage but one very red eyeball now slowly clearing.

Great topic Hayley…sometimes the notion of ‘peaceful co-existence’ with Nature does test our mettle! But you’re spot on…they don’t lead to harm (unlike ticks) and in medicine’s distant history were even used for therapeutic blood-letting! (Even in wound care today, maggots are sometimes used in areas to debride dead skin!) I like to think of myself as part of an ecosystem but not THEIR ecosystem 😂 I’ve also heard in this post-pandemic period that hand-sanitizer has been applied to encourage their release…but this probably falls into the ‘not recommended’ category.

Yep hand sanitizer worked. Not sure if it vommed on me though! Hopefully the sanitizer helps with that too.

Bettie got one on her leg recently on a hike, and freaked and I quickly ripped it off her 😂 after I was like. "mmm that wasn't the best way to handle that, but it's done now lol" She was ok afterwards so got away clean!

My biggest concern for when a leech latches is the potential for disease, so just letting them do their thing only sounds like you're opening yourself up for potential infection. Hurting the leech to get it off never seemed like a good idea since it would make it upchuck into you, I mean, I bet I would spit out my food if my whole back was set on fire. So, using a card to remove it is possibly the safest way to remove a leech both for you and it. Cool, gonna look up more stuff about leeches now, thanks, I guess??

I had one last week. I felt something cool and wet by my knee, zipped off my pants and found a fully engorged ball of leech cooling off after a big meal. It appears my blood is just delicious. The mozzies and leeches all agree.

Haha sounds like the mozzies and leeches conspire with each other. The mozzies fly past from their vantage point and alert the leeches you’re coming.

Salt is not a myth. You literally state that they fall off when applying it. Also I live in Alaska where leeches are numerous. Salt works fine. Unless you're trying not to hurt the leeches feelings.
