How to remove a stuck item from a washing machine drum.
Something stuck in the washing machine drum? In this video eSpares will show you how to remove it. Often, things such as bra wires, coins, socks, hair grips or other small items can get jammed inside.
If not removed, stuck items can lead to damage to your appliance. If you can see something is trapped in your washing machine, but can't easily remove it, this video will take you through how step-by-step. Also, if you notice any missing socks or similar laundry items, it's best to check f they have been caught in the drum.
Another indication that an item is jammed, is if your washing machine is making strange noises. If you hear scraping or rattling sounds during or after the wash cycle, this video will help you identify where the noise is coming from inside the drum. If the object isn't in the drum, we will also show you how to check the heater and sump hose areas for any items that may have been trapped here.

You sir are a legend. We have replaced 2 paddles twice each. Today the 3rd paddle came off too. The wife requested a new machine as this one was broken.... I looked though the drum with no luck. Took out the heater. No luck. Underneath I removed the hose. Boom! One sharpened bra wire fell out. I cleaned the hose and found Bobby pins and a coin too. I'm buying paddles from e spares now. you have a loyal customer. Thank you

I came across your video and rechecked my washer out and there was a nail stuck in the inner drum!!! Thanks for the comments Alan. Always check pockets to ensure no foreign object gets in the machine as coins in particular can punch through a plastic tub and scrap a good machine.

Thank you so much! Washing machine was making a terrible noise and I feared it had given up the ghost. Watched your video, took the heater out - and there was the bra wire that had been clicking against the drum (although 'clicking' is a very understated word for the deafening racket it produced when it was on its spin cycle). 40 minutes - and job done. Brilliant - thanks again.

Sir, ye are a wizard of the washing machine world. I had very quick look at the machine after stopping your video in mid-flow and just as you excently explained, and just by sheer good fortune and luck when I slowly rotated the drum a sock popped up to say hello and with some gentle persuasion I was able to remove . When my wife was going to bed last night she was adding a new washing machine to her list of purchases so thank-you for the profeesional video. All the best from West Dunbartonshire

Bravo sir, you saved me from a costly bill. I found with a flashlight a bra wire. Had to remove one of the washing drumlifters, under here there are some bigger holes which makes it so much easier. With a plier able to remove the bra wire!! Thank you a million times!

It was a bra wire for me! I didn't see it at first because I didn't know what I was looking for. I watched this video and calmly searched the drum and found the bra wire sticking out (actually each end was sticking out of a different hole.) It took some yanking but I got it out. Works like a charm now.

Well done Christopher. Just a quick tip, check the holes the wire came out are not left with a sharp edge as this can catch and damage clothes. If you use an old pair of tights as a cloth and gently rub over the perforations any with sharp edges will catch the tights. You can then carefully use a cross head screwdriver to tap the edge down and remove the sharp bits.

man you have just saved me a costly repair bill and hours of wasted time!! my drum was grating, got a torch and found the end of a cotton bud stick poking out of a hole! my daughter is obsessed with the things, will be having words with her lol cheers :)

Thanks for the comments Mark, it's worth mentioning where there has been one bud others may have passed to the filter at the bottom of the machine. If these manage to move a little they will jam the pump and your machine will stop full of water so check this now before you have a problem.

This may have been posted 7 years ago. But it is still helping people. Mainly me who had no clue how to check any places. Learnt some new things about my washing machine too 🤣Thankfully the underwire was stuck in the sump hose. since if it got stuck in the heater it wouldve been a pain as it was in the front and I couldn't get the front panel to open 😅

So we have a necklace caught under one of the plastic dividers on the inner drum. Any tips on how to remove those? We can't just pull the necklace out. Is there a way to pop it off? Thank you.

Fml I was looking in between the rubber thingy and the drum and flashing light inside the drum for a minute now. I can clearly remember putting two white socks into the washing machine and only one came out. It was a short one, could it slip into the gap and get sucked up into the drain tube anyhow? Because if not I have absolutely no clue where else it might be

I looked for the bra wire and didn't see it so took half the machine apart before I scratched my head and came on trusty old KZfaq. Look with a torch you showed me....I found it in 10 seconds 😂 many thanks for saving my day!

I have a Kenmore and during the wash cycle my clothes wrap around the agitator and they also get stuck in the space under the agitator blades and the base. Can you please tell me why this happens?

Many thanks for this video, it was very helpful. There was a terrible noise during the the spin cycle. I removed the heater followed by the sump pipe and managed to find the culprit a £1 coin, thanks.

I have my sweatpants waist string stuck in the drum holes 😭 it's got a metal tipped string, and the metal tip must have been misshapened once it got stuck, so now it's stuck stuck.

So we know there's a bra wire in ours as partner is missing one and we can hear the light scraping. No end showing from inside drum, have looked between inner and outer and no sign there, have shone torch inside drum and can see the inside of the outer drum through it but no sign of missing bra wire. Sounds like the scraping is coming from top of drum rather than bottom near sump, what could I do now?

I had a key trapped between the drum and the outer drum and your video saved meee! I actually tried removing that plastic plate that is placed inside the drum (at 0:43 in the it is touched to spin the drum). That uncovered some gaps inside the metal part and I could reach underneath the drum through those gaps and found the key! I was able to do that because with my machine the drum is accessed from the top side. Got the idea from watching every attempt made in the video, all the ways to access small objects. Thaaaaaank yooou! I feel elated, because was stressed out before and I'm so grateful for this video now. Sorry :D Thank you!

Thanks for the video. On my Hotpoint Aqualtis, there is a massive gap between the seal and the drum. It came like it and I am worried about things like socks getting stuck down it. We have already had a colour catcher stuck in the pump.

There has to be a gap between the front of the drum and the seal as if the wash load gets out of balance it can slightly twist the drum and cause it to rub on the seal. You can use a rubber mallet to knock the rim closer to the seal if the gap is excessive, takes a bit of time to get right but check there is no play in the bearings before considering this. I would expect to see a gap of around 5 mm.

Do you have any advice on how to retrieve an item lost from the (inlet?) water pipe please? An item was dropped in the detergent draw and down that water pipe during cleaning (toothbrush head). Will it just go down to the filter? currently trying to learn how a washing machine actually works.

Hi , we recently have bought a “recon” indisit washer/dryer- everything appears to work however the machine is noisy a high pitched whirring noise - I don’t think it’s the bearings on the drum - I’d say something to do with the motor ? Makes the noise more going clockwise any ideas 💡 I’m told the brushes have been done - I should add the drum spins free by hand

Hi Do one, the easiest way to test the motor is to remove the drive belt and put it on, make sure it is back together before you test it for safety, also check the suspension.

never lay a washing machine on its side with the soap tray high , i did that once a tiny amount of water left in the soap tray dripped onto the top pcb blowing it when i pluged the machine in

Hi Wilko S, if you are regularly losing socks then a sock bag might be the answer, they zip up so you don't lose any and wash normally.

So now I'm wondering if there is something stuck behind the drum. I can spin the drum with no resistance, but it comes to a sudden stop after 1 1/2 revolutions. Is that normal? @@eSpares
