TIP: use masking tape on top and bottom for the initial bead, smooth with WET finger (or) WET tool (water) as seen in the video, removing 90% of excess caulk (gloved hand, ideally, box of 50+ gloves is under $10 at Harbor Freight), then quickly remove tape. Immediately go over bead one more time with wet finger to avoid a ceiling or edge on the caulk that will catch water and be difficult to clean later. Keep in mind the drying time of the caulk and move as quickly as possible as soon as you start installing new caulk. Also, cleaning surface with a rubbing alcohol wipe before caulk application will give you the best surface for the caulk to stick to as it will remove any oils or remnant shampoo/conditioner that may have gotten behind the old caulk. Let dry for twice the time on the label, make sure air is circulating and consider wearing a chemical mask to protect from fumes. DO NOT touch caulk to check if dry. It will stick to your finger and will not be fixable without repeating process. Repeating the process is not the end of the world, just don't be afraid to try. Mold gets you sick and it will just continue to find places to go.

I live in a rental house and the previous tenants just kept caulking over and over to hide the mold and gunk, now I got to remove god knows how many layers of old nasty caulk to get down to where I can recaulk the right way. Ugh, what a thankless job. My no-good landlord won't fix a damn thing and just laughed when I asked if she could hire someone to come in and do this job! Her reply "hey you got two hands". I'd take action but she keeps my rent super low and never raises it. I figure I can spend a few bucks and do my own labor to keep my rent low. I mean $750 a month for a one bedroom 950 sq ft house close to the city but still far enough away to feel like the country is a steal! Now if she would just get me the two missing window screens she promised me 5 years ago, yeah right, when pigs you know what. Thanks for DIY.

Same with mine bc I noticed a smell like an boiled egg smell especially when I ran the shower and I thought it was the drain and I’m like what the hell could it be so my son said he figured it out and said it’s along the tile so I did what’s he’s doing removing the caulk and that’s where the smell came from. The old caulk and mold build up and water trapped. Since I removed the old caulk and cleaning it, I don’t smell that smell anymore. I am recaulking it today

Great video! For anyone looking to remove caulk from surfaces and wants to do it in about 5 to 10 minutes and have the funds to spare, get a Dremel Multi-Max with the scraper blade and get it done. It’s money well spent as you can use it for so many other things.

@jaya.0069. I was afraid of that! Some of that rock hard caulk also touches the tile and I’m really not wanting to chip up the tile to get the old caulk out but it’s gotten so cracked and nasty looking. I don’t have much choice. Thanks for the tip on the chisel.😊

I appreciate the time you took to show all the steps including taping the shower bed off with plastic for easy cleanup and also wearing latex gloves to protect your hands. Simple steps but newbies sometimes don’t know to do these things. Also thanks for the quick lesson about what kind of caulk to use.

Hey thanks for this! Question- Are you supposed to remove caulk from the corners (as in, the vertical line going up to the ceiling) as well? I can't tell if it's caulk in the corner or grout.....

Great video. My only question is that in the BEFORE there was also caulk going up the wall not just around the pan/base of the shower but in the AFTER caulk was only replaced around the pan. Why is that?

I bought a mop with a scour pad and telescoping handle just for cleaning the shower. Spray the walls and scrub, rinse with detachable shower head.

I have been a professional caulker for over 45 years and almost never use tape. But it is exactly what I recommend homeowners do. And NEVER do any of the stupid crap shown n KZfaq,like wet tooling( using water,soapy water, solvent or worst of all window cleaner) using any liquid to tool with WILL cause the sealant to fail prematurely. Don't you clean between removing the moldy caulk and placing the new caulk in it's place? I feel like some bathroom cleaner is in order to make sure you don't seal in remnants of the old mold that was there.

@@Drayafenandez as professionals we always clean with a solvent before re caulkimg. Alcohol or acetone works well. Wipe it dry so it doesn’t leave a film. Household cleaner is not a good idea ( many have ingredients that are harmful to the bond or to the uncurled sealant itself.)

Can you share how it looks one year later? I had a very similar situation, replaced the caulking with mold proof bathroom caulk, and all the mold grew back from underneath within two years

Remember, after the big job, maintenance is required. Clean shower after each use, (the mold loves your dead skin), dry shower as needed and good bathroom ventilation.

I need to do this to my shower, but it’s the only shower in my house so it’s going to be hard to do this to allow it to dry completely.

I would use a single edged razor blade rather than the utility knife. Thinner and sharper but you need to be careful not to scratch the fiberglass pan. I would clean the pan edge with alcohol to make sure the silicone adheres well.

That tool needs a bit sharper edge. It works better. I've used a old can opener looks like a triangle, it works good.

While removing the old caulking you don’t want to scratch the tub in the process.

That is true, there will be scratches that will happen when removing caulking using tools, on the video I suggested using the plastic scraper on the silicone remover tool. In this case just do you best. Having masking tape will help reduce scratches as well 👍🏽😊

you shouldnt have dry the tiles after using the shower. The whole reason it was getting moldy is because the person who originally caulked the shower was cutting corners to save money and didnt apply the right caulk. If you're drying your shower everytime you take a shower theres a good chance you have some kind of ocd thing going on and probably should contact a mental health professional.

I replaced the caulk in my tub/shower 7 years ago. I squeegee the tile walls and wipe the faucet and caulk down after every use. I never have to clean the walls or caulk (only the tub) and it all sparkles. Note, I did not do this at first and the caulk was getting dingy due to hard water. So I scrubbed it and going forward began wiping it down. It’s been pearly white since then. Yes, it’s a bit of a hassle. But so is deep cleaning and scrubbing. I’d rather apply an ounce of prevention 😉 Plus it feels like such a treat getting into a clean shower. It’s like being at a hotel 😂

Tip: The day before starting to remove the old moldy caulk, roll up a piece of TOILET PAPER. Soak the toilet paper with bleach. Press the bleached soaked toilet paper against the moldy caulk. Remove the next day.

I have lived in Maryland my whole life. Dont think everyone should lump the shittyness of Baltimore City with the rest of Maryland. I also used to build a couple p80’s before I destroyed them all. I like many enjoy tinkering and building just for the pure joy of it. P80 should have put that money into fighting it in court instead of paying out. Very disappointing indeed.
