In this video, I will show you how to remove the background from hundreds of Ai Art images simultaneously. I sell Midjourney AI-generated art on Etsy and I was looking for the most optimized way of removing background on a big scale.

You didn't finish the job. There's still lots of little white speckle. What if someone wanted to use my design on a green shirt?

I would personally not upload them with so much white still in. All the people generating AI images still do that and it looks lazy. You can easily remove the rest of the white under Select > Color Range and then playing with the Fuzziness. This let's you select ALL the white that is still in the image. Ofcourse don't erase any white that is supposed to be in the image like from the eyes, teeth, clothes etc.

I personally use affinity photo instead of photoshop cause you buy it once and that’s it. And depending on the photos I go for two options. Option 1: I just use the Flood Erase tool to remove the white background (works perfect for high contrast photos) or option 2: I duplicate the photo and do a mask for the 0-Layer and delete everything, so the mask is black. And for Layer one I would use the flood eraser tool. Works for photos where it takes away too much of the white because now I could go back to layer-0 and add back with a white paint brush what I want to be seen. I could never run that automatism because even a white dot drives me crazy lol. So I need to take a look at every single picture

I feel validated. I keep saying Photoshop and Canva in groups. I Especially get backlash when I say canva does a better job over all and ease of use in Adobe groups When I was a Photoshop beta tester I was begging for a background remover that was as easy as canva. But I love Photoshop and Illustrator and I am thrilled with some of the new tools they added...

Just wanted to say that your experience was my inspiration to rebrand my shop on Etsy and start selling clipart. I was a bit skeptical at first and didn't belive it. Fortunatly, I have found your shop , You displayed the images there at 0:23 and I kind of reverse engineered through Etsy search. I won't say it in the comments but now I know where my shop was lacking and I can fix my past mistakes. Thank you for providing such great and transparent content. Your Shop is truly heavenly !

It's super cool to see your videos since it seems we are in synch, I just spent a good time doing the same research. I came to more or less the same conclusions though I found a somewhat better way to remove the backgrounds with Photoshop, try "Select" > "Color Range" and choose white, then move the fuziness bar. That will select the specific color you choose within an specific range, it won't work with every image since some images have a lot of white color in the middle of it (like the birds you showed), but still it's super useful for some kind of images. Sometimes the manual magic wand works better, sometimes the color range.
@madebymarcin

I like to create a background layer afterward the color selection mask is applied of a vibrant color not in the image. Then set your paintbrush to white and edit the mask created by the color range selection. Paint over all of the areas in your foreground that have the vibrant color visible and you can quick fix the majority of the issues that the color selection mask creates.

You can use the smooth function before deleting the background to get smoother edges on your background removal. Alternatively, you can use select and mask to better control what parts of the background you want to remove - this is great for higher detail clipping like for hair, and illustrations/pen art. When you have a clipping mask made of the clipart you can also add the minimum filter, and set it to roundness at 0.5-1px. It smooths out the edges of selections. At the end of the day though, your process is more than fine for massive amounts of processing for small sized images for clipart.
@craver3d278

Yes, and you can also once selected, You can go up to-select/expand by 2px or so, and that will help remove the little floating dots around and the white edges that are ugly.

I’m afraid that’s a no from me simply because I have not and will not use Photoshop since they went to a subscription model. $25 per month is crazy when someone isn’t even making that much per month on Etsy. It’s just another unnecessary expense. Personally I like the FREE Photopea. It’s online and so I can use it anywhere I go. It does just as good a job as Photoshop - or even better, IMO. It also has a few background removal options including a brush which makes cleanup much easier. It probably doesn’t have Actions but I’ve never looked for them TBH. Also, the batch removal does a crap job from what I saw in the video. Most buyers would not be happy with those results (and will leave you shop-killing bad reviews). If you have to edit each image anyway, the batch-processing is useless. Just my two cents worth. Each to their own.

I'm just wondering, if you are going to manually edit your images in the end anyway is there a need to automate the process? I get that it's saving a few clicks but those clicks won't even take up any time at all, even in the long run. I can see this working better for images with a very clear distinction between the background and the actual image, as you wouldn't need to manually edit as much of those. Great video though! I had no idea Photoshop could even be used to automate these kinds of processes!

Thanks Patrick cool vid. I am just wondering, if Canva does a great job (meaning no more work needed on the image) then surely it would still be quicker to do it one by one in Canva as honestly the images did look like they needed lots of work tbh. Also Canva would be cheaper than Photoshop. If, however you still need to work on the image after Canva well that's another story, just thinking 🤔

I’ve been doing it manually in Canva. Omg I got photoshop too but I didn’t know about the background removal and I’ve been using magic wand to do it manually and I though Canva did a better job but photoshop since I can do a lot at once and then go fix the one that didn’t do a good job. Plus I try not to get many of the watercolor clipart because they are harder to remove background. I try to get the one with clean clear define outline so they are easy to remove background.

I love doing it the 'masked version' because I want to easily edit it again instead of really 'delete' it. Plus, after the magic wand, right click and choose 'Similar', and it will select all similar color like in this case is all white color. For batch process this is okay, because adding a new white is easy just by adding new layer underneath it and brush it white. So, it must always be done and save as both .psd and png files. This increase your storage used but I prefer like this because editing suck if I didn't have the masked thingy on. And one more thing is to ensure all batch saves is done in 300 dpi. You can show it by doing it in the beginning so final image is always 300 dpi. O r in your case 450 dpi? Sorry I didn't remember... Thank you for the lesson. I really appreciate it 🙂

Ive been using adobe express for backround removal. Sometimes its doing great work too but some more deatailed borders can be problematic. I like this Adobes option too. Just wondering can I do it as effectively. In some videos Alek Sheffy showed he is creating with tools smooth the borders and extract them in Phtopea with 5 and 6 px, so it made the sides very clean and nice. Im still thinking this is great too but this multiple removals same time is cool, but it takes lot of cleaning. I dont think it is faster, after all you have to go again on each images, I usually use actions to resize, set up 300 DPI, and stuff like this, but I prefer to do it one by one, it doesn't take a lot of time, and you can adjust the tolerance everytime it's needed to get better results. Also I've tried website you can pay for this... the AI do the almost the same job as the one on canvas, sometimes it removes things you wanna keep 😅 it seems that there is no miracle options, that's why clipart without background have more value 😉 Anyway thanks for this video ! If you want to upload png's that you are proud of you should be manually editing these images with select and mask if you are using Photoshop. It doesn't take that long once you are familiar with the controls, Quick Select tool does most of the work for you, and gives a perfected final product. Posting clipart with messy edges for SALE is just wrong.
