Thanks for the tips! I’ve always left mine in during the pickling process but never removed before I tan. I always remove right before mounting and clean the oils from the ears using lacquer thinner before I glue in my ear liners.

Thank you so much for your videos, I have a question, I have my tanned whitetail deer cape in the freezer, I've got some sewing to do ,but I only have little time each day to work on it, do I need to keep putting it back in the freezer or can I leave it out. Thank you 😊

It can’t be left out or it will dry and begin to shrink and harden. I wouldn’t take it out until you can do all the repair and prep work, refreeze, then thaw when you are ready to mount

Would pickling and neutralizing, with cartridge in place, affect the preservation of the hide where the cartridge covered?

No it doesn't. The skin is so thin along the cartilage that the pickle penetrates very well

I remove as well after the pickle but our deer get alotnof ear bites and sores and it tears a lot when pulling cartilage

Is is easy to hide a 1" cut at the base of the back of the ear. What is the best way to fix it? Super glue and pins or stitches

Question. Is the only reason for removing the cartilage is because it will become stiff and hard to work with the ears to make them look realistic once the hide is tanned?

Correct. They will puff out like a balloon. You can leave the cartilage if you want to use bondo instead of earliners because the Bondo will hold it all together and keep it from drumming.

What would happen if you left the cartilage in and used ear liners?

It thickens the ear too much for one thing. The earliners are made to replace the cartilage. Also, when the cartilage dries, it has more of a tendency to pull away from the liner and drumming occurs. If you decide to leave the cartilage in, I would use Bondo instead of liners. This also creates a good looking finish.

@@thecedarridgechronicles I pulled two hides out of the Krowtann this week and prepped them to mount.. then froze them while I wait for the forms to ship. Have you ever tried to remove the cartilage after freezing one?

instead of an ear liner or bondo method why couldn't a guy use air dry modeling clay instead for the ears I've never heard anyone ever talk about it just curious your doin a great job

It would probably work as far as looks, but the ears are so thin, they would break over or crease if too much pressure was applied to them because dry clay is so brittle. I'm also not sure that the clay would be able to provide enough rigid support to keep the ears from curling over time as they dried.

@@thecedarridgechronicles thank you very much for the response I have a deer I harvested this year im going to give it a shot to see how it works as long as it doesn't fall of the wall lol I've used the bondo ear method don't really care for it did ear liners and got great results but with ear liners if it was to ever get dropped or came off the wall they wouldn't break I keep you posted on how it goes have a good one
