Great tip! Vinegar is a mild acid so I believe what's happening to the darker colored clamps after being soaked is that they are actually being etched ,,,, and/are the original finishes being eaten off by the vinegar.

Art, I came across your video in search of a safer solvent to clean up the glue from my clamps. Thank you. Never would have thought of it. Nice to see a fellow woodworker with excellent taste in cars (997.2 TT here). I just completed a year-long project constructing a sim-racing rig (almost entirely out of MDO plywood). It's not quite the same as being on track with your car, but it's certainly a lot safer. They're both rewarding hobbies. Enjoy my friend...
@abowen23 жыл бұрын
Whoaaa, 997.2TT...that's a beast! I'd love to see that sim racing rig. You know, after all the bells and whistles ordered for this car, the salesman told me he could put me in a Turbo for 8K more because much of the extras I was paying for came standard on the Turbo and I didn't even order ceramic brakes. I cancelled the C4S order and took him up on his offer, that was until he refused to give me the same 6% off msrp that he was giving me on the C4S. I got my feelings hurt and felt he was taking advantage of my good nature, so I went back to this C4S. I have no regrets though. The Turbo was gonna be a coupe and this C4S is a fun-as-hell cabriolet and unquestionably the best car I've ever owned in my life, hands down!. Thank you for the compliment my friend. I would say good luck with the glue removal, but I assure you, you won't need luck, it's a sure thing, I promise!

I soaked old tools steel hammer crowbar and screw drivers etc in vinegar all the rust is gone. I got into the habit of keeping a wet cloth near my work area and immediately wipe up wood glue as I go I didn't in the past and the sanding was hell. Now I'll keep a spray bottle of vinegar there too, using vinegar on wood to soften glue right now got two pieces separated thank you this helped a lot

I need to clarify something. The day before, when I put the clamp in the tube of liquid, the vinegar didn't rise to the very top...it stopped about an inch from the lip but I hadn't noticed it. About an hour before I made this video, I poured the last inch of vinegar to bring it to the top, that's why when I removed the clamp, there was still about an inch of crud on it that needed to be wiped off. Also, all the crud that is built up around the red portion of the clamp will come off with a simple wipe of a damp cloth...it looks grimy and corroded, but I assure you, it's only the fermented crap that rose up from the tube.

Art, I discovered your video a day or two ago. Made it a point to get out of the house, buy some PVC at Home Depot. Bought 2 gallons of White Vinegar at Shoprite. I just pulled a gunked up clamp out of my PVC tube and ran a paper towel over it. Spotless! Everything came off so easily. And the clamp looks great too. I soaked the clamp overnight. Very interesting discovery, thanks for sharing. I always have white vinegar around because I use it for killing weeds. It works great at full strength and safe for kids and pets. I will try a piece of 2" PVC pipe with a cap on the end since I have that laying around. Plus it should be cheaper than that clear plastic tubing. You can buy short lengths of PVC at the big box stores or any length you need to work with your 3 or 4 foot clamps.

Hi Art, I just wanted to say thank you for this idea! I made two tubes using PVC and plastic bases. First clamp went in overnight - probably too long. It got all the glue off easily but also discolored the clamp more than I would have liked. No harm, no foul, though - it won't affect operation of the clamp. Next one went in for only about 2 hours. Whatever glue didn't fall off was soft enough that it was easy to peel right off. It won't take long to go through the rest of the clamps now. This tip has saved me hours of cleaning and scraping, thanks again! Dan Stromberg

I should also mention that beffore I put the clamps in the tube, I also removed the movable head from the clamps - I figured it would help get the vinegar up higher. A little more work but worth it since that was where the worst of the glue was. Thanks again...

I've been reclaiming some old wood. Pull the nails out, drill the nail hole with a 1/4" bit, insert glue and a 1/4" dowel. After sawing off the dowel and sanding it flush, you can barely see where the hole was. The problem I ran into was glue getting into the saw teeth. If I washed it off before it set everything was fine, but one time I forgot and the glue dried overnight. I was about ready to trash the saw when I found your video. I soaked a rag in white vinegar and wrapped it around the blade. I'll check it tomorrow, but based on what I've just seen, I think I'm going to be happy with the results .

Sir, thank you for your tip on removing glue from clamps. I searched the topic on KZfaq yesterday and got your method and one from James King at King's Fine Woodworking. Yours seemed much simpler. I didn't have anything to soak the clamps in, so I just wet an old rag with vinegar and wiped in on. I kept the clamps moist with vinegar for a bit, and then, using the same rag, just wiped the glue off. I did use a brass brush to clean out the grooves more thoroughly. I cleaned up two messy clamps in less than 15 minutes. Second, I want to thank you for your service to our country as a career military man. I was in the army from 1968 - 1970 between undergraduate school and law school. At the time, I don't recall anyone thanking me for my service. It was really quite the opposite at the time. Now, when our church recognizes veterans, on Memorial Day and Veteran's Day, we do get applause when we stand with other members of our service. Better late than never, I suppose.
@abowen23 жыл бұрын
Marshall...Remember, you can also get a piece of pvc pipe from Home Depot, glue a cap on the end and just stand it up in a corner over night. I promise you, you will NOT need to take a brush to it, not one little bit. Also, I hear you about the acknowledgment of our dedicated military service time. I returned home from Navy boot camp on December 18, 1968. I got off the train on Long Island NY and walked into a bar to enjoy my first beer as a Sailor and was met by lice infected losers who accused me of killing babies in View Nam. Two bikers came to my aid, kicked one ass and sent the other 3 fleeing. Three weeks later, I was in Saigon...in transit to catch my ship off the coast. My next 2 years was hell. Three deployments to Nam one including morgue duty. However, after those deployments, I developed a whole new respect for soldiers and Marines and a whole new appreciation for life itself. I kept my nose clean for the next 21+ years...a very difficult thing to do considering the rampant abuse of drugs and the racial unrest in the military back then, but...I did it with my eyes on the prize, to be a police officer one day. I spent 20 years in patrol and UC narcotics, I walked away from both services proud and daring anyone to besmirch law enforcement or the military services. Thank you Marshall...thank you so much for YOUR service and dedication. I do hope life treated you well brother!

@@abowen2 My method took less than one fluid ounce of vinegar. The brush was no trouble and just my ocd in action. Granted, my glue deposit was only a couple of days old and was the only glue deposit. I usually cover clamps with packing tape or wax paper to prevent glue deposits on my clamps. Don't know why I didn't do that this time.
@abowen23 жыл бұрын
@@marshallmurrell4583 I tried covering the clamps as well, but you know as I do, when the clock begins on a clamp project, the last thing we want to waste time on is whipping out some cellophane tape and/or wax paper. Here's the other thing...though your method used very little vinegar, I fill the tube with vinegar and after removing the last of the clamps, I put a cap on the tube and put it outside near the back of my garage, until I need it again. One year later, I used it to clean 6 clamps and away it went again. I've had the same tube for 2 years or so, since I made the video and it's still filled with vinegar, so you won't be having to spend big bux replacing it. However, if that system works for you, that makes me very happy to know I contributed in some small way to help you clean your clamps without spending a full day on useless scraping. good luck to you Marshall.

If for some reason your city doesn't have a similar supplier, take a look on Amazon.com , they too sell them in varying lengths. Not sure if they have 3-4 foot lengths, but, you could certainly buy two 24 inch lengths and epoxy them together. I would suspect that would be a verty doable thing. Good luck Dave and let me know how it works out for you. Happy New Year! Dave, an after thought. If you're not too concerned about wanting to see thru the tube, you could certainly just pick up a similar PVC/ABS tube from Home Depot.

@abowen22 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm not sure if your goal is to remove the glue build up or to remove old paint. The short answer to cover both is, Yes...white vinegar is a natural corrosive. It'll remove the glue rather quickly and it will also, more slowly, eat away at your paint.

Thanks Troy. keep in mind, something I didn't mention, but I suspect some of you may have thought of...you can also use PVC or ABS vs the more expensive clear tubing I used. You can use caps to seal one end but unless you fabricated a flat bottom on your tube, you'll just have to lean it up against a corner wall to prevent the tube from tipping and spilling your vinegar.

Hmm. Since the acid took all the zinc electroplating off, I suspect that now rust will be an issue. Just put some paste wax on the bars every now and then and the glue will come off easily in the future. If it is too late and you cannot get the glue off, try a heat gun to soften PVA glue which should make it easier to get off. Then keep them waxed.
