How to remove hedges

The quickest and simplest way to remove stubborn and deep rooted hedges without even breaking a sweat. Using a portable engine hoist which I hired for about £40 and folded into the back of my car (this one functioned up to a 500kg breaking strain..ample!). Also works on single troublesome plants.
Note. This was incredibly satisfying

Dude, this is brilliant! I removed 30+ feet of hedges in 3 hours time! Thank you so much for the awesome idea. It worked like a charm. It even uprooted a small tree. My engine hoist was rated a little higher than the one used in this video. Thank you kindly Mr. Morgan Jones. Cheers.... -Jerry

I watched this video two weeks ago. Today I removed 80 ft. of old growth Privet hedge with a portable hoist. Absolutely brilliant idea. I praised this idea many times throughout the day. Thanks very much for the idea.

My hedges were larger, so I lifted them with the hoist until the ground swelled around the trunk. Then I used an axe and a spade shovel to break the roots. Some took time to remove, but it was worth it when the roots finally popped and the hoist lifted out the hedge. Fortunately I was able to borrow a hoist. I would have wasted money renting one because the job took longer then I anticipated and there is a learning curve for getting familiar with using the hoist. Thank you for this helpful video!

Glad to see this works, as I was contemplating using the same method. The privet I've inherited is rather more "established" than this (read neglected and reaching about 14 feet).

If you take your time to do a good knot at the base of the hedge roots, then it won't slip so easily as the bark comes apart like your one shrub showed. I am not sure if a chain works best with a slip hook or a tow strap wrapped well around the base root structure, but you really need to put a good knot there to ensure it does not slip at all. This method is actually better than using a farm jack and tripod setup, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing the video.

This is my project for this weekend. I am going to call the rental place and reserve an engine hoist. I hope that this is as easy as it looks. I was wondering how I was going to get the roots out. Great job and cool music too. Thanks.

I tried this with a HSS 500Kg hoist similar to what you used but it simply didn't have enough pulling power for my well established hedge which is a mixture of Beech, Holly, Laurel and Hawthorn. It looked like if the hoist had more lifting power it would've worked but it would lift so far and just refuse to budge any further. I need to find something rated 1000 or 2000 Kg I reckon. So to others looking to do this, it's a good idea in principle but make sure your hoist is up to the job.

45 years old thujas hedges here, I have 200+ meters to replace ! A contractor successfully used a 1.7 ton excavator for a few meters, so I suppose your 1-2 tons approximation is correct. The issue is that a 1.5-2 tons manual hoist would most likely be impractical, at least 3-4x heavier an bigger than the one shown in the video ? I also have to move part of the fence, I suppose the excavator is the way to go, except it doesn't fit anywhere...

Just an FYI, we have clay soil and tried this with two different 500Kg engine hoists. First one maxed out before pulling the hedge out, second one broke the hoist before pulling the hedge out. You must be lucky to have either nice small roots or loose soil.

After watching this video 12 months ago I finally got round to removing 20m of hedge using this method. Cost me £10 to hire one off gumtree and was brilliant. I found using a chain round the stump was the best and used a clove hitch each time.

How do you keep the hedges from slipping if the strap ends up stripping the bark? We had cut the hedges down to about 1 foot in height before using the engine crane, but when using either the chain or the tow strap, we kept having the bark strip away and thus the chain/strap slip on us. Will the slip knot prevent this from happening?

Worse case scenario, drill a 10mm hole through the main trunk, stick an iron pin into it, then tie the rope or chain around it, then pull out, ive got a major job coming up, that involves pulling up small trees and this will do the job perfectly, nice one fella

Awesome man. I got a similar 5 ton engine hoist, but my hedges have a base root trunk whatever that is about the size of a small basket ball. Some of the roots coming off the truck are as thick as a baseball bat.... I need something serious to get these out..... any ideas?
@halmay024
@halmay024 6 жыл бұрын
Just take a spade and clear soil away from the roots then you can take a chainsaw to them. Generally roots are only in the top 2' of soil. A little hard work doesn't hurt... well, actually it does, but it builds character!

If you use a cheap hoist like from Harbor Freight, then you will always have issues. A good 2 ton hoist will do the trick without any real issues. The 1 ton ones at Harbor Freight are total junk for the most part.
