How To Remove/Install Auto Window Glass

In this video I'll show you how to safely remove and then reinstall automotive 1/4 panel glass. This install pertains to glass that is held in by a seal whereas a few auto makers glue the glass in. Windshield glass is a bit more difficult but many quarter panels and rear hatch glass will be the same as this how-to.

Hey Matt I just wanted to say thank you for the videos. I found this channel a few months ago and i never owned a jeep before but I was persuaded by the Hope Floats project to buy a jeep. I bought a 92 XJ and installed a RC 6.5 long arm kit, ARB lockers, regeared it, slip yoke eliminator, 35 inch Mickeys and a bunch of other things but threw the whole project I always used your videos for advice and to get my rig where it is and I couldn't ask for a better trail rig and daily driver. Big thanks to you and the whole BleepinJeep crew

Still an Xj god in 2023. My 00 has a rust patch under the glass on the exterior and after a few years of staring at this growing spot, lm finally tooled and skilled enough to fix it for free, at home. Thanks Matt!

This really worked! Thank you so much for this informative video. The only issue we had was that it was -10 here in Chicago and the rubber seal was incredibly stiff. Still worked though

Just had to do this job and let me tell you this method made it super easy!!! I locked my keys in the Jeep and at the time I had no motor in it or a battery connected, so I said screw it and cut out the back window lol Thanks Bleepin Jeep!

Great instructional on the window replacement. Not sure why you felt the need to break the glass, was it worth it? Using the string/rope is a great idea.

the easiest way to install glass is to attach a suction cup to the inside and pull on the suction cup and string

Love the how to stuff, Doin' some DIY myself, the wife hit a tree at Jeep Jam. A JK with less than 10k miles on it and is already gettin' a second bumper and fender flare. Oh well, gives me somethin' to do I guess. Hopefully I can find the video and I'll post it on my channel.

That's a pretty slick trick. That takes some general know how, and good hands. If you get stuck on a corner, you need some finesse to get it in place.

I have a 2 door with the vents on the back, side glass... is there anything else holding that in? or are they just part of the whole window? I want to swap in solid windows that I have but I'm worried there might be rivets or something in my way.

One tip I did on my first window, I wrapped duct tape around both sides of the window, so if it started to fall, the was several strands of tape to catch it.

I really hope that you know that Safety Glass is laminated to ensure that it breaks into small regular pieces. Regular glass would leave jagged shards and a much worse gash in your hand.

Joe Prieur Actually safety glass is a laminated product. Tempered glass is heat treated for strength. I almost hate that I know this. Too much useless information between my ears for the useful stuff to stick.

Frank Knockleby Tempered glass in automotive side windows is also considered "safety glass" due to its fracturing instantly if broken. The main reason manufacturers went to laminated was to save weight and meet MPG requirements. Laminated is certainly more fragile then the tempered.

Just got the window out of a 25 year old VW Bus. The principle you show is correct, but when the window really sticks in there you just have to take it slow millimeter by millimeter. I made up a camfered (15 degrees) piece of wood about 6 inches long and moved this along the seam with a rubber mallet. Try to pull out the window before it is really loose and you will break it!

Have you ever replaced the quarter panel glass on a ZJ? Mine just spontaneously shattered a few days ago. The rubber surround appears to be different on the inside than the XJ in the video. Are the ZJ windows installed using adhesive? I could figure this out on my own, but I'd rather go into it with a little extra knowledge from a veteran like yourself. Btw, I love all of your videos. Thanks for them!

I'll be honest, I had my doubts about how easy this would be. It was easier than I thought. The hardest part was yanking out all the trim to get the donor out at the junk yard. We had the window in in under 5 minutes.

Would this work with a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was told they use epoxy and I would get it out but never get one back in? I have a 2004 Salvage Jeep I can try to get out and back in. Looks like a great idea for the WJ. Not many Jeep Qtr panel glass replacements on You Tube, only yours

Windshield?? If your replacing it hire a pro. If not, kick it out. If you mean the front door glass, I have a video on that yes.

Thank you for your answer. I ment the windshield. I thought I could remove it my self, but after I read your answer I understand that is impossible. The reason why I want to remove it is that I want to remove the vinnumber plate placed on the dashbord with two rivets. Do you think there is a better way to do this. Sorry for my spelling and english. I come from Denmark ;))
