Great video. Would love to see a complete series on building a smoker, from start to finish, with going over all the different steps and different ways to handle each step. You do a great job explaining and going over the details thoroughly. I think it would make for a great series that’s been lacking on KZfaq, not much great info out there. I’m just now in the process of collecting parts for my 120 gallon build and appreciate the info. Thanks for the content, and Keep up the great vids.

I agree. They are worth it. I haven't tried the HF surface conditioning tool yet but maybe when I have some fun money I'll pick that one up and see how it compares to the Restorer. I can see how for one handed use the Restorer wins but it also has a wider frame so the HF surfacing tool would probably win when it comes to getting in tighter spots.

What do you do for cleaning the inside of the tank? Noticed on my build quiet a bit of buildup and have just been spending time inside it with a wire wheel. Wondering if there is a better solution. Thanks!

Yes, great video. I like what you're trying to do, but if the mill scale look is what you want, paint-tripping might be the way to go. It will leave the mill in place and lose the paint.

I used a chemical stripper and it took the paint off down to a dark grey metal surface. I assume this is the mill scale? Sorry for the ignorance this is my first build. Do i just put the linseed oil on the mill scale or do i need to take it down to the shiny metal? Thanks. Also is there a program (free) that i can use to open up the cnc files from the plans i got off your site? for the 120 offset build.
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder Жыл бұрын
yep, the dark color is the millscale. I put the boiled linseed oil directly on the steel. I actually try not to get the millscale off but some does come off anyway. for the free cad program just use QCAD.

I am concerned about lead paint on a 1952 tank I am working on. After prepping loose paint and coating with linseed oil is it pretty safe. I know I need to be careful with the dust and removal, just curious how well it's is sealed up with the linseed oil.
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder Жыл бұрын
Great question, of course, anytime you heat something, stuff will vaporize and get airborne. I don’t really think the linseed oil would permanently seal the lead vapors or whatever but I really do think that it’s not much of a risk after the build is complete. Most of the risk comes during the build where you’re grinding and sanding and things.

Is leaving the mill scale an advantage for appearance only if you're going with a linseed oil finish, or perhaps a clear finish? I would think that if you're going with an opaque finish, it wouldn't matter. Or is it a matter of adhesion of the paint/finish?
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder Жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s simply for appearance. If for some reason you do remove the mill scale and wanna have that dark finish, you can add an acid wash which I’ve been doing on some of my newer pits, then coating them with linseed oil

Great video Frank! Have you ever used a chemical stripper? I'm a big fan of the needle gun, I used them on tanks in the Boilermakers, but I'm not a fan of the noise and the small surface area affected. I guess I'm just looking for an easier, softer way. 🙋👍
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder Жыл бұрын
Hey! So, I have used them in the past and they do work really well! Not really sure why I didn't use that approach on this one other than rinsing the stripper off with water could leave some surface rust and I wanted to prevent that if I could.

I've seen some builders leave the paint on and then cover with either high-temp clearcoat or the boiled linseed oil. Is there a downside to leaving the paint on? My first thought is if the smoker gets too hot and the paint burns off it could smell pretty bad and be harmful or toxic.
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder Жыл бұрын
I’ve actually left the paint on also. First couple of cooks on the smoker. You might smell that. Otherwise it goes away overtime. Not to say that in certain situations it couldn’t be bad smelling or toxic. Most people don’t have any trouble though

You mentioned lead paint several times. How sure are you that lead paint was used on the tank? Did you use a test kit? I've made a few propane tank smokers and lead paint is something I've always been concerned about with small children around the house. Even just a small amount of lead paint dust would be something to be very concerned about.
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder Жыл бұрын
Great question Josh! I am not positive, only operating on the assumption it is. Mostly because a high percentage of outdoor paints back in the old days did contain lead. Since this tank was re-painted many times since it was built in 1950 it's a perty safe bet in my opinion.

Wb galvanized tanks
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder 8 ай бұрын
Most of the time the tank is not galvanized unless it was used exclusively for water. Propane tanks are not galvanized because propane and I super captain react with galvanized and will cut holes in the tank. Most of the time it’s a galvanized painted tank, and the propane never comes in contact with that surface. Propane tanks are always mild steel.

Have you ever tried a pressure washer with a turbo nozzle
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder Жыл бұрын
We have. They work good also! We used the nozzle kit that hooks up to a power washer and has a sand sucker tube that you put down in a 5 gallon bucket of sand. only issue is making sure you don't set the gun down on the ground and kee[ water from running down the hose into the sand sucker nozzle. If it does the tube plugs up. the nozzle wears out eventually so you need to find a replacement.

How do you remove the rust from inside the tank?
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder Жыл бұрын
great question Fernie! Normally you will not find rust inside a propane tank unless it has been standing open for some time or had water in it for a long time since the mercaptan is oily. However, I normally do not concern myself with rust. I mostly will powerwash the inside of the tank and then scrub it only if it is really bad. then just season it like normal with some kind of food safe oil like pam etc.
