Smokers can become very rusty if not cared for properly and rust removed periodically. Here's how I restored my Yoder Chisholm trailer smoker to remove all the rust and re-season it to keep it smoking for years to come.

Great idea on the beef tallow. I'm impressed by the patina. Really amazing. Please do a follow up vid in 6 months to a year so we can see how it holds up through the BBQ season and the harsh Canadian winter.

Thanks for the great ideas Steve, I just bought my first offset last fall and my firebox is fairly rusty now, despite it being painted. Was thinking of just sanding and repainting but this is has got me thinking about just simply taking off the rust with some gel as you suggest, then simply seasoning with some oil/tallow of some kind. Looks like it will get pleasantly black anyway, and don't have to paint! Cheers

When my smoker gets rust I just heat it up really hot and re season it with oil even vegetable oil or canola oil

I take a wire brush to it first, water it down, and saddle out to dry out. Then I build a hot fire and already canola oil. Seems to work just fine.

Fantastic job on the resto! The beef tallow finish turned out AMAZING! She looks like a totally different unit now and I'm sure she'll smoke like a champ!...and just like smoking, doing anything fresh out of the gate (like your restoration) gives true meaning to "trial by fire"...pun intended...gotta fly now, got some burnt ends that require some evolution so...Happy Smoking! Good call on the Beef tallow for seasoning. A pit that large you'd easily spend a mint on PAM. From my limited chemistry knowledge you can use just about any lipid (plant or animal fat) to season steel/cast iron as long as you don't go over the smoke point. It's also a much easier coating to maintain than paint and doesn't worry about being absolutely free of oxidation. I've had cast iron skillets get rusty because a housemate put them in the dishwasher. A mechanical scrub to get the loose rust off and then a re-season you're good as gold. I'd say it's better than paint/powder coating.

We redid a smoker back in May 2023. We just knocked off the rough outside, sprayed the whole outside with ospho. Let that set for what the directions said then painted it black with a high heat paint. Now we've got to do the big one.

Ospho rust converter is fantastic. It’s a phosphoric acid that converts rust from iron oxide, to iron phosphate. Similar to a parkerized finish. It’s liquid so you can use a garden sprayer

Awesome video that we all will need at some point! Don’t recommend painting the firebox as that will hide the rust buildup and probably bubble up over time. Great insights, did something similar in the summer and I don’t recommend using the drill, my dewalt overheated. Used CLR on the “outside” of the firebox and it worked. Will refer back to this video for next time. Thanks again!

If you are removing rust on iron you can try a mix of water and black strap molasses. You could brush it on and wrap it in the same way. You may need to leave it on for a day or two but it will work. I restored a heavily rusted Blackstone griddle using the molasses and water.

Greetings from Essex County, UK! Absolutely beautiful smoker, well done. I had a Landmann Grand Tennessee for a couple of years, but the hinges literally rusted through and became "glued"! I've invested a bit more in a new OKJ Highland, it's a lot heavier, perhaps not up to your standards, but seems decent enough. The black paint is peeling off already after 6 smokes, not sure if I should start using boiled linseed oil, or beef tallow, on the weak areas, or wait until it's entirely rusty... I use avocado oil all the time for seasoning on my cast iron skillets and pots, as advised by Kent Rollins from Cowboy Cooking, could I use that oil to seal the outside of my offset smoker? In advance, many thanks for your help. Best regards, Manny UK

This was around 7k used. It depends if the metal is still good. If you can remove the rust to bare metal then just oil it or paint it. If it's rusted through you'll have to cut it out and weld new metal on it.

@@SmokeTrailsBBQ Thank you so much for the advise. Yes, it did rust all the way through where there are one hole on each side right below the barrel. If it were me I would do small areas at a time than spray with cooking oil or else you will get more oxidation almost immediately after sanding. And that would defeat the purpose of all your hard work that sand blaster will be good on the inside as well as in tight areas and hard to get at corners! Think of it like a cast iron skillet that you are seasoning!
