Nice little mid-week video, Dom. My gear knob was in good condition but I did replace the comedy gaiter though, with a black suede item that has red stitching to match my new flat bottom steering wheel. As your video shows it's relatively straight forward, so long as you don't drop a screw into the gear linkage like I did! I made up some new swear words when that happened!

I have the half leather one - I prefer the look of it, but the bottom half isn't perfectly tight so doesn't feel as quality as you'd expect. Will swap it out one day I think.

My pleasure mate. sorry to ask a question. I did ask it on last vid but sadly no1 as of yet got back to me. I have a P0171 code come up on the car still. Iv checked for vacuum leaks all seems fine. I plugged it in check vac and its between 19/22(up and down on idle) and I noticed there was no reading for my lambda sensor 1 (bank 1 back of the engine) but the lambda sensor 2 is working(by cat)so i changed lambda 1 but still no reading coming up on it showing its working? Any ideas? Cheers very much.

gareth b apologies I get so many messages it’s hard to keep track of them all, Usually p0171 is usually a boost leak or maf issue. But if your precat sensor isn’t reading anything that’s more than likely the issue. You could well have a broken wire. Ideally you need to test the wiring make sure your getting voltage and ground at the plug as often these cars the wire can break down in the bay. I’ve had this issue on mine before

Hey there. Great explanantion. I have a 2001 TT quattro, im having trouble uncsrewing mine. When ever i try to unscrew it counter clockwise it seems to rotste the whole shifter and it then sits funny. Tohigh i will try to unscrew the silver rim on the outside and lift up the rubber so i can see if i need to hold something else down. I pull down on metal between the knob and ruber pyramid but still nothing. Also, where can i order another rubber to replace ? Because i have a small tear. Thabks and i hope to hear back soon.

Thanks Dom for another great video & I could have done with this a few months ago when I did mine. Removel of mine was nowhere near has easy has your video states.. mine really did not want to come off & the whole shaft kept spinning around with the gear knob on which I'll add is the same version 2 gear knob has yours in the video. Eventually & I'm still not sure has to how mine exactly came off has for some weird reason my mind has actually erased it from my memory banks has it was such a shit job to do!!! I've never had such an annoying job which has always been an easy job on every other car I've had..I nearly resorted in getting NASA involved on it!!😩🤦🏼🤷🏼 Cheers dude 😉🤘🏼

Got mine off no problem and gave it a good cleanup with a toothpick and ultrasonic cleaner. But getting it back on with the rubber gaiter going up is a right pain. Any tips? Used pliers but it's 20 year old rubber, so feels risky. Knob is looking great and on fine (stop laughing at the back), but a right pain getting the rubber back up.

Usually a little bit of liquid will allow it to slide up ok, even just a little water should do it mate, failing that a little hand soap

@@TheParrottBros Bit of WD40 on the stick was great at making the rubber more slippery, and not getting it up the shaft. This knob is a right pain the ass, so to speak.

Mines the polished one and doesn't come off no matter what I try . It just screws around and around and pulls up so far but then doesn't come up any more at all ...pulled very hard up but I'm going to break something

Some just don’t wanna come off that’s for sure. They all come off the same way it’s just I get where your coming from. Last thing you wanna do is break the shifter assembly

I asked CB Auto a while back if they where going to do more, but they said the knobs are to expensive to produce so they won't make any more. :(

Hi mate, I have a quick question for you...On my TT the gear knob is fairly loose and rotates quite freely. To the point that it does not line up in the correct dirrection. That washer at the base that you speak of, is that what holds it tight and facing the right way? I might try taking it off tomorrow and investigate!

It should just stop when screwing it up if it doesn’t maybe try adding some ptfe tape to get it snug slightly sooner

@@TheParrottBros oh mate I think I have made a schoolboy error! I took a look today and spun it loads and loads clockwise and suddenly started to feel a bit tighter! A few more turns and it’s snug! What’s better is I cannot turn it anymore and it’s smack bang in line! So it must have been super loose all this time even though it has always felt like it just needed a tighten! It’s given me an excuse to take it off and buff it up as it has lots of scratches and ring dings. Thanks for your help! Super channel!

Take a good grasp and give it a good yank just be careful not to pull the whole selector up through the whole

New owner of ‘02 tt ! Like on my 2nd day of driving this car I’m on the road cruising In 5th gear when I go to down shift the shifter has disconnected from the trans. Linkage! I’m stuck in 5th and can’t shift to neutral or lower or higher gear! I’m like WTF I call the seller and he sends me his mechanics address but I can’t take surface streets so I park on the freeway and have AAA tow to his mech. Shop! What came disconnected?

Oooo no that’s unfortunate. It could have come off in 2 possible places. Either the linkage where it attaches on top of the gearbox under the air box ( easier option) or the less favourite one is the shifter itself ( accessible from underneath after removing exhaust and prop)

Since brexit posting abroad from the UK has been a nightmare and often stuff gets held for months, returned etc. That’s probably why

@@TheParrottBros also my shift knob is stuck.. any suggestions for that? The whole shifter is turning including the circular thing at the bottom of it that pushes down. Could be stuck on from the heat but it’s a pain

@@kiloxman117 that’s a new one for me, never heard of that but spinning. You need something to grip the shaft, usually some pump pliers or similar with a bit of bite should hold it while you wind off the knob
