How To Remove Stuck BMW E30 Subframe Bushings From The Chassis | 012
When I removed the BMW E30 rear beam from the chassis, I ran into an issue where the centres of the E30 rear subframe bushings could not be removed from the chassis.
Seemed like they had corroded and effectively welded them in place.
To get the rear subframe removed from the E30 we ended up breaking the bushing on the drivers side leaving only the top part stuck on the car, but the passenger side rear subframe bushing had to have the rubber cut between the inner and outer part of the OEM bushing to allow the beam to come down.

What's now left of the rear beam bushings is stuck to the chassis solid and doesn't want to come off at all.
In looking it up, this seems to be a fairly common problem BMW E30 enthusiasts encounter when refreshing their rear subframe bushings. So I figured I'd record my efforts to get them removed and share what worked.
I hope this video will be useful to those with the same stuck bushing issue as I had.

you probably know by now but at 2:09.. what you're pointing to is the head of the bolt..you can tap the bolt up from underneath..just under the head are splines to stop the bolt spinning round...you can 'sacrifice" the bolt and drop a new one in.

Ahh yes I suspected it at the time but there appeared to be absolutely no way to take it out, and trust me I gave it some solid whacks upwards with the big hammer. 😂 Didn't budge in the slightest, but knowing what I do now I'd have probably been a bit more persistent in trying to remove it that way. Not to worry, worked out fine in the end. 😁

This episode brought back memories! I damaged one of the studs drilling out the remains of the old bushes doing my old e30. Getting that stud out to replace it was a real battle of wills, my father and I vs 1 stuck rear beam stud. Smacking with a hammer, lowering the weight of the shell onto the stud resting on an axle stand, then bouncing up and down in the boot (touring). Smacking with the hammer for a few more hours... Soaking from above with wd40 for days, smacking some more with the hammer, in the end eventually it came out with one last gentle tap. Dad delt the final blow and lorded the victory over me, i still claim jam jar theory that i loosened it before he got there...😂

Hahaa! Sounds like you had an absolute mare with that! I knew those studs wouldn't come out easy. Took me a while to even work out where it corresponds on the top side within the car. Glad I managed to avoid messing it up and needing to remove it that way. Lots of people seem to tell me "just take the stud out from the top instead". Maybe their cars are different, and they changed the design at some point, but those studs are not designed to be taken out as far as I could tell. 🤣

@@SPANNERRASH well BMW sell the studs so in theory they thought someone might be able to remove one and need a replacement in the future... Lol. I suspect mine was more rusted in place than a particularly tight press fit from factory 🤣

Yeah you may well need to be forceful with yours too. Shocking just how stuck these subframe bushings get on E30s. At least you can see how it all goes together now, good luck with it mate!

Yes.. they’re a right pain 😅, the angle grinder method worked well, I knocked the long bolts up into the car to remove them and used a thick flathead driver as a chisel to knock from above, still not easy.. just better than being under the car with bits falling in your eyes lol

Nice, I couldnt work out how to access them from the top side in a non-destructive way. Maybe I should have been a bit braver with the hammer.

How did you remove the rubber from the bushing ?

Pretty sure I used a combination of saw blades and a blow torch. Take your time, it will come apart.
