Removing Tampos with Nail Polish Remover - Custom Diecast Car Tips & Tricks
This is a popular question in the custom diecast and diecast racing community. How do you remove tampos?
Tampos are just the factory decals on Hot Wheels, Matchbox and other diecast cars. While everyone has their own method, this is mine. I think it's the easiest I've found and I hope you can use it to make some cool looking cars!
Materials:
Nail Polish Remover
A Little Cup
A whole mess of Q-Tips
The method is fairly simple but there are a few things to consider:
- Do not rub too hard or you'll affect the stock paint
- Do not get the nail polish remover on the wheels or windows to avoid fogging
- Use enamel paint or panel liner to fill in recessed areas where tampos remain

Thanks for confirming this for me! Using your method, I also found that by rolling the cuetip between your fingers as you wipe it will enable you to be more selective in your removal of the tampos. Keep up the great work 😎👍

Rather that the paint/needle tech, you can also use “Sharpie” (ultra-fine tipped permanent markers) to fix door, trunk, hood, vents, grill, tail pan, etc. Anywhere there is a recessed line/area. The same places that you just use the paint. It is not “permanent” like paint, but because of the recessed nature of the seams/areas they are used on, it will not wipe away as it will if you were to use it in the roof or hood flat areas. Just mark the seam/recessed area, let it dry, and then come back with a soft cloth and wipe away and over color (like i said it will take away the accessible marks/areas but not the recessed marks/areas. Works well for display cars, but can wear out with play.

If it’s a metal casting, it’ll work. The only time I’ve run into an issue is with plastic cars because the graphics are usually stickers rather than screen print.
