How to Remove the Freewheel from a Bicycle Wheel

In this video I demonstrate how to take off and reinstall the rear freewheel sprockets (gears) from a bike wheel. I have only covered the freewheel type system that are typically found on older and lower end bicycles. I have a separate video which shows how to do this on bikes which use the freehub and cassette type of rear sprocket ratcheting system. I also have a video that will help you identify which of these two systems you have.
This is a useful skill to have for swapping between different gear ratios, for cleaning your cogs, and for performing other bike maintenance tasks including changing a broken spoke.

The tools recommended include:
-A Freewheel Remover tool which fits your freewheel (visit your local bike shop).
-A sized wrench that fits onto your Freewheel Removal tool.
The type of grease that I used is White Lithium Grease, but there are many other types of grease that will work equally well.

Thanks. I've never liked that derogatory nickname. Spoke protectors provide benefits and unless someone is concerned about the minimal weight that they add to a bike, they have virtually no drawbacks.

Thanks I appreciate it! I've actually been thinking it might be nice to make a video update on my Linear Limo. It's now been two years since I finished assembling it. There are quite a few things I've done to it since then which I can discuss, and a few more things that I still want to do. I'm waiting on some parts to arrive first.

I've got one that is good and stuck. Vice approach didn't work, but my temporary bench mount isn't solid enough. I guess I'm going to have to mount a tire and try the wall trick, maybe with a rubber mallet.

@@cjhoyle I got it by bracing the wheel between my feet wrapped in non-slip rubber meant for use under rugs and rapping a 15" ratchet wrench with a rubber mallet. After a half dozen solid blows, it suddenly broke loose.

I used a 12 inch adjustable wrench and leaned the tire against dumbbells then pushed down my body weight. It worked out great. Thanks for the video I was clueless how to get that off on my 12 year old bike.

Normally, I have to use a rubber hammer with the long 1 inch wrench. This works most of the time. I don't have access to a vice (well, I do but I have nowhere solid to mount it), and one of the freewheels won't come off with my 250 foot pound impact so I just left it on. Pretty sure if it needs more torque than than to come off, I would shread the remover tool or freewheel itself (or even the wheel) so I had to take an L on that haha. The wall trick is pretty neat as well.

What about a ratchet ? At how many ft per pound ?

A ratchet isn't necessary and neither is a torque wrench. The freewheel automatically gets tightened after you reinstall it when you ride.

haha that's a really good question. The previous apartment where I lived had the same flooring, and so do lots of other apartment buildings in my city. My guess is just that this style of hardwood flooring was really common in the 60's/70's which is when a huge amount of apartment buildings were built here. As far as I know, it's still the original hardwood, but they just sand it down as needed between tenants.
