Removing the intake manifold is the first step in many jobs including changing coils or spark plugs or the valve cover gasket on Bank 1 (rear), which is necessary because of oil leaks or misfires with codes P0301, P0303, or P0305, or for replacing the knock sensor or knock sensor harness, which is needed for codes P0325 and P0330, or for accessing fuel injectors, and so on. Similar for many Toyota and Lexus vehicles that share the 3.0-liter V6 1MZ-FE engine, Camry, Sienna, Avalon, Solara, RX300.

With the same engine in a Sienna -- same year -- one is well advised to remove the upper and lower cowling elements. These hold the wipers and their motor. 10mm bolts are used at all points -- except some plastic press fasteners. With the cowling out of the way, life is a LOT easier.

Same thing on a Lexus RX300. Cowl has to come off.

You said the left side bolt is 12mm. I believe it is 14mm. Other side is 12mm. How many ground wires were attached to the plenum. I am putting the intake plenum back. There are 3 ground wires. I am not sure where they all go.
@Merryfrankster_

The engine harness has two ground terminals. One goes on the backside of the plenum. The second goes on the corner of the plenum (above the PCV hose). A ground wire goes from the corner of the plenum to the frame.

Did you have to drain the coolant?
@Merryfrankster_
@Merryfrankster_ 3 жыл бұрын
Not really necessary for removing the upper I take manifold. You can leave the coolant hoses connected to the throttle body and no coolant leaks out. If you disconnect those hoses just clamp them first so no coolant leaks out.

you can use the vacuum hose caps to close the end. they inexpensive

I have a loose green/yellow wire that comes up near the PCV valve that is not connected. Any idea where that should go? Cooling fans are not working right so I think this wire is releated...

green/yellow is the universal color code -- in Europe, et. al for a grounding conductor -- so, yeah, it's to be grounded to the manifold -- cleanly. Grounds are not so picky -- so run it to the corner of the manifold -- see Merryfrankster's response to Jamie Vay.

Doubtful this would have anything to do with the cooling fans. But anything is possible.

@@Merryfrankster_ That conductor is very, very likely a grounding path for the ECU. ( That aluminum manifold plenum is just too juicy for an electrical engineer to pass up. You'll note that multiple systems are jointly grounded to the manifold. Voltage wise, it's zero voltage ground. An EE would term it as a 'grounding rail.' ) [ This term only makes sense when you're looking at the wiring diagrams that EEs crank out. You'll find this lingo constantly coming up in digital electronics, BTW.]

K I seriously can't get any type of wrench on that passenger side bracket. Mine is a 2001 first gen
@Merryfrankster_
@Merryfrankster_ 2 жыл бұрын
It is very close to the firewall. Very very difficult to reach. Get under the car and unfasten the bottom of the bracket fro the motor. Then you can pull it out of a piece with the plenum far enough to undo the top bolt. Then get rid of that bracket. Throw it in the dumpster.

It might help if you have a flex head ratchet wrench.

I fucked up, how bad is it if coolant leaked everywhere when I took off the last big part? I didn't think I even took off a coolant hose. But took off the part and coolant leaked from God knows where

When you remove the lower intake, coolant comes out of the coolant channels that go through the intake. It can flow down into the intake ports and if the valves are open it can go down into the cylinders. If it stays there it could cause a hydro-lock when you start up. So, to get the coolant out, remove the spark plugs, and crank the engine. Any coolant in the spark plugs will shoot out the spark plug holes. An alternative is use a mityvac and run a hose down the spark plug hole into the cylinder, to suck out any coolant.

@@Merryfrankster_ alright so nothing to worry about? And it's only sitting in the right side hole, the rectangle shape one
@Merryfrankster_

@@da36mafioso When you take the lower intake off and you look down, there are three openings on each side that are very clearly the intake ports leading to the valves. The other openings are for coolant. The coolant openings have coolant in them, unless you use the block drain to drain the block of coolant. Do not allow coolant into the intake ports, or you will hydrolock and bend a piston rod.

Among the many uses of Coca cola, cleaning battery terminals, cleaning rusty bolts, flushing radiators, is the little known use as brake fluid! And you can drink it, too.
