This is a simple video that shows me tearing out cottonwood tree roots from my lawn. I very much dislike these cottonwood trees and I hope that someday I can get rid of them all together.

I've been doing this all day in my small garden today before i get the lawn. Ready the soil for seeding. I had one all in one about 6ft today but it wasn't too deep. I had to cut it at the tree end as it goes off the property boundary and deeper so only have about 2 ft left deep in my garden.

Well Conner I watched and listen for a solution to roots problems growing above ground invading the turf demolishing the lawn. I read the viewer comments hoping for a good solution but to my dismay, I only learned what not to do! I am curious if I cut the large massive roots already well established above ground with a sazwall, removing the unsightly root that no harm will come to my huge tree that it supports? Doing what you are doing will prevent what I am dealing with now! Welcome thoughts and comments from others on whether to saw off the nuisance!

Get a Sawall and cut them in sections. They will die and decay and no longer be an issue. Less work than digging them up and you dont have to tear rip the yard. Also would help to put a root barrier along the edge of the lawn. And put root barriers around those tree rings. It will send the roots downwards instead of along the surface. Otherwise all those little tress will be a huge pisser offer in the future.

If a cottonwood tree will sprout up from midroot and grow quickly into a 10 foot tree that means that whenever you cut down those existing cottonwood trees that you will also have to get every one of their roots out of your yard or else more cottonwood tree will sprout up after you think you have rid yourself of that irritation. Good luck with that project, Connor. You're going to need it.

One day I wanted to remove all the lawn turf from by back yard. Gardener came to do the job. But because roots of my neighbors redwood trees spread all over my yard, he said he could not do the job. I brainstormed and asked him if he had a edger with steel blades. he did and I suggested he use it on the lawn cutting down deep 5-6 inches in a criss cross pattern. Voila! It worked, the lawn and roots came up much easier. I wonder if anyone else has done this before?

I removed tree roots 1/2" to 3" in diameter using a battery powered Ryobi reciprocating saw. Cuts through dirt and roots. Mush easier than pulling by hand or pliers. The vibrations of the saw loosens up the dirts surrounding the roots. This is the easiest way and each root eliminated in a minute or less.

There goes all that leveling work. Will you need a tree service to cut the cottonwoods down? They don't look like they are close to crush anything if you chopped them down yourself. Getting a tree service would probably be cheaper than throwing your back out hunched over pulling roots.

I’m going through this as we speak, only my issue is with runners produced by the maple tree in my front yard. The HOA is up my butt about the thinness of my lawn, and I’m reseeding it in the worst areas. But God DAMN, these runners are like some insidious Chinese puzzle. You find a bunch of smaller ones running in and out of each other and, once you start freeing up a couple, they all start gradually loosening up until you find the main root they’re running off of. Up til THAT point it’s NO FUN! I HATE the friggin’ HOA!!!
