How to get Hard to Remove Floors up from a Wooden Subfloor!
Head to squarespace.com/modernbuilds to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code: MODERNBUILDS
I've got back to back videos coming up with prepping the Income property for new Luxury Vinyl Flank Flooring! I ended needing to remove these floors after talking to a friend about what to do and they were tougher to get up than I expected. Hopefully this video shows what to expect with a similar job and whether or not its worth renting a power scraper from somewhere like Home Depot. If I were doing this kind of project again I would start with the same tools that I did, but as soon as I saw that it was getting to be more than a 1 day job with manual tools, I'd rent a power scraper for 4 hours and knock it out. Sometimes I learn lessons the hard way lol! Next episode is coming out in a couple days where I'll be leveling out the plywood subfloor taking care of both high and low spots! Thanks for watching
I would've rented one of these: rb.gy/5e0ry

MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

1. Asbestos in old vinyl tiles. 2. Abestos in old mastic used to glue the tiles down. 3. A hammer drill works a treat as a scraper: get a flat blade SDS attachment and set the drill to hammer-only mode (no rotation).

We did a similar job in our basement with the scraper blade on the recip saw. You don’t get the damage on the concrete so for anyone watching I feel it’s a great way to go if you’re dealing with a slab.

Thanks for letting us see all the possible ways to tackle this. I was surprised by the variety available. Though as you've learned, it's usually not worth trying to avoid buying/renting a tool, especially for someone who regularly works on large projects like yourself. Your labor is valuable. If a hundred bucks saves you 2-4 hours, it paid for itself.

Those flooring tiles have a tendency to have asbestos glue. I really hope you had that tested before you removed it. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to still get it tested in case you were exposed.

For the future, I recently struggled with vinyl flooring being stuck in our kitchen. We were remodelling, and I used all of these methods AND did a chemical strip. Chemical strip needed 2 days to get down below into the glue. Vinyl wasn't a tile but a sheet. Just cutting out the existing subfloor and replacing with new subfloor was WAY easier and time effective than taking out all the rest. I got out as much as I could, then crowbared everything up and took up any screws that might have been in there. Cut and laid new subfloor and I'm so happy I have a new floor to work on than trying to level out an old one.

Former flooring guy here n i would use a 12-18 inch scraper. Also i would keep all my used, dull oscillating blades n give them a sharp edge just for this reason here. They really came in handy for those stubborn tiles. Good to see you wearing hand n knee protection. Great job as always

I helped my brother with his Tattoo Shop he started. The place he leases had this old linoleum tile flooring about two layers worth, wound up renting the power floor scraper. man it made short work of it. We started with a steel bar scraper my stepdad made. it was way too my physical work and we barely made it through the first layer.

Old vinyl flooring can be a pain. Real linoleum comes in a sheet and is beautiful wears like iron and is naturally anti microbial. But it’s hugely expensive. I’ve loving this series

We laid Marmoleum in our kitchen, which is a true linoleum product. I don't recall it being particularly expensive. Even vinyl is pretty pricey around here, so maybe the Marmoleum didn't seem much more.

I basically just did this but was installing tile in my kitchen. Had the same struggle with pulling up the floor as some spots had a TON of adhesive. I ended up buying a floor scraper from Harbor freight and that thing was great. All metal with a long handle giving it weight and has replaceable blades, item number 60572

Genuine curiosity. Why didn't you do the flooring before the kitchen cupboards? It seems like it would be easier to floor an empty room and then put the cupboards on the new flooring.

So this is a sales video for all sorts of gadgets plus square space. If anyone else does this for just removing adhesive stuck Lino tiles just use a wallpaper steamer for 30 seconds on each. Softens adhesive quick and they peel up easy. And if they are potentially pre 1970 linoleum a lot of people are citing asbestos warnings. Tests and companies offering testing are available but if nothing gets airborne there’s probably no issue.

You should sand the floor before installing anything new, the glue will be way more sticky. On the old stuff, it will get loose in 2 years max. Just a good pass like the wall with 500 to clean the plywood sheet of the ground is always a good idea.

The author does like to from scratch, kzfaq.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.

Don’t do this! The paper backing and the mastic is suspect and if positive is usual 20 percent plus asbestos. To put that in perspective popcorn ceiling is usually around 3 and drywall mud around 2. If it’s positive the house would not pass an air test and dust samples in the ducts and even on a surfaces on a different floor would probably not pass and would be considered contaminated. His liability for property, people’s health and illegal dumping is endless and actually has a high chance of being caught, if the next owner has the smarts to do it legally then there’s a pre-abatement air test (so the abatement company doesn’t take the blame for contamination) and if the air test fails or is even high the abatement can’t start, and that’s when contamination dust testing starts and that’s when bankruptcy starts. I will pass on the debate on how bad it’s for your health I’m in the middle on that debate so I’m not an asbestos alarmist. It is however very regulated.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying here. Once asbestos tiles and adhesive is removed it's gone. Lay a new flooring material and you're good to go. There's no risk of somehow contaminating the home down the road. Years back when I used to do a little asbestos abatement work we either a) removed or b) encapsulated the material. Encapsulating simply means sealing or covering. So....sand or scrape this floor, carefully vacuum it with a HEPA-equipped vacuum, then lay your new flooring material. Of course, seal off this work area from the rest of the house before starting. I think people have an inflated idea as to the risk involved. Asbestos is not nuclear waste (I worked in nuclear research too, once upon a time, as a young university student) and you simply need to follow a few basic rules.
