Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
Ok, so now it's time to paint this bumper.
Someone tried to paint this part of the car with spray cans. I can't stress this enough guys, there are tons of tutorials out there about how to paint your car with spray cans, but honestly it's not a good idea. There are a lot of horror stories that arise from people trying to paint their cars with spray cans.
I've been commissioned to fix this thing, so I'm going to take this opportunity to show you how to paint your grill/bumper properly. Since it's pretty much the same process for the rest of the car, you can apply this procedure and learn how to paint your car; however it should be noted that painting a surface that large can present it's own difficulties. Additional research should be done about the painting techniques (such as pass direction) that work best for cars.
I would show you that myself, but I don't have a vehicle lying around that I can afford to paint.
In this video I've taken the previous paint off of the bumper and sanded it to prepare it for paint. I've also cleaned it with wax and grease remover. I begin by applying two coats of primer, and sanding them smooth after a couple of days to make sure that everything is as smooth as it should be.
I use AutoAir acrylic automotive paint to paint the grill black. This is the same paint brand that I use in many of my videos, so my viewers are probably familiar with it as this point.
I finish it off with a catalyzed polyurethane clear coat made by PPG. This is a very important step, as the clear coat is what makes such a big difference between a proper paint job and an amateur spray can job.
Don't forget to ask your questions or submit video questions if you want to show me something.
Thanks for watching.

I laughed out loud when you said "no-one really wants to watch me do a bunch of sanding" because I was thinking,,,,, I do!! I do !! This may be a helpful tip, your local Sally beauty supply sells every grit and style of nail files,sanding sticks, blocks etc. Some are very durable and will hold through just about any job. P.S the files and sanders for fake nails are much more durable. I've used them for sanding intricate wood to sharpening my bow saw, they work. The handiest is the rectangular 1"x 3or4" sanding block with a different grit on each side.The core is a hard foam,so it has a good flex to it. Okay, my novel on nail files is complete now,lol Nice video!

Thanks, that's a great tip. And here I was trying to convince my girl to use normal sandpaper instead of buying those for her nails haha.

I'm not a fan of sanding either. Sometimes the right tools make it less aggravating though.

Can I send you a grille to my truck? After watching this video, you are the only one who I trust to do this correctly.

I’m not really set up to be doing truck grills unfortunately. Do you not have a local body shop that does automotive paint work?

it's the 1 that you paint bright blue base coat, then the last to coat is black, and either let it sit or use heat (don't know),and the black pulls it's self apart and cracks happen and you see blue crack lines, but thanks for the quick reply
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 жыл бұрын
+Ram It My understanding of it is that it's a coating that crystalizes and acts as a mask so the black doesn't stick to it. You wipe it off after and it takes the black from those areas with it. Maybe I'm still not thinking of the right effect. That one requires the crackle finish product. If you want the black to actually crack and pull you're running the risk that it will peel off after. Sometimes non-compatible paints do that.

Fast spraying is fine. Good you stopped to say about adjusting pattern and air flow. I was thinking 'how are you able to spend so long on small awkward areas?' But you answered it. Looked like a great finish too. How many hours work?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 9 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it wasn't too confusing. There was about 4 hours worth of sanding involved plus 2-3 of painting and polishing.

Hi Brad Great vídeo! I learned enough to know that I cannot do this myself.. In the infamous words of Clint Eastwood.. a man’s gotta know his limitations! Question, I have an 2013 Audi A5 Convertible, the paint on the grill has started to peel and looks horrible. Is this a project you would take on?
@BradAngove

Hello; I did this one for a friend of mine but I generally don’t do automotive work. I don’t really have the facility for it. You would likely be better off taking it to a more typical body shop.

Is it just the lighting or is there a lot of putting on the license plate holder and around the edges. And the fins don’t look quite right
@BradAngove

Putting? If that was autocorrect from pitting, there’s just some dust on it. I should have dealt with that before filming haha.

I'm looking to do a plastic dash bezel, I want to do crackle effect, with black on top of blue, do you know how I could do this effect
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 жыл бұрын
+Ram It If it's the crackle finish that I'm thinking of, you need the product that makes the paint crystallize. I haven't used it personally. If you're looking to do the marblelized effect/ ripple effect, then I know how to do it. I don't think that's what you're asking for though.
