This is a really nice and feature reach unit for the price.

Great video! I was in the same boat; got a barebones station on Ebay for ~$80, started from scratch, and went through the troubleshooting you captured here. I wish I knew about this video when I was going through the exercise. These boxes are a pain to get working but they have a lot of great features and can be had for cheap. Thanks for sharing this with others who may find themselves in the same boat!

Is the box still running well for you today?

I ended up selling mine. I was jus not using it enough. But it worked perfectly for how long I had it.

The seller was too lazy to load the operating system on it after having wiped the drives? Shame, shame! But one good thing emerged: You learnt something new, and are prepared in case of an emergency.

I don't blame them, as they sell all their stuff with empty drives. They also sell a lot of stuff, so installing software would not be cost effective for them. But I do blame Buffalo for not making this easier. Anyway, as you said, this was an opportunity for learning at the end of the day.

That's true: I got hold of a LinkStation Mini LS-WXL, and it's a total pain to get the firmware reloaded onto it upon changing both drives. Succeeded a few times, but the M.O. in general is way too complex for the average computer user to perform. That's why I moved on to x86/64-based server-grade hardware.

In RAID 1, you will have 2 TB (2,000 GB) size, the 2nd drive is a backup of the first. This is how 99% of all NAS are configured.

I understand you point, but it was not working when I bought it, so I doubt it that this was the reason they advertised it as 2TB. They would have at least said that it has 2 x 2TB hard drives to get more $ on it.

Their ignorance is your advantage! Anyway, $80 is a great price just for the NAS without any drives. Thank you for the video.

Some Terastation models let you set up a print server and you plug the printer into one of the USB ports: www.buffalotech.com/knowledge-base/configuring-the-print-server-on-a-buffalo-terastation. I haven't been able to get it to work on my TS-XEL but it's available in the firmware and likely works better with some print models than others.

@@UltimateDIY NO, not through USB (which is for backup to external drives). You connect directly through an Ethernet cable. Straight thru (normal) or Crossover both seem to work, so the Terrastation must have auto/ MDI-X inputs. So run the cable direct from computer to Terrastation.
