Someone along the line told me to get a 5 gallon bucket, fill it 3/4 with sand and pour vegetable oil in to the sane till the sand was damp (one average bottle seemed enough). Then ever time I went to use a shove push the blade into the sand as deep as I could, when I was done using the shove wash it off and push the blade in the sand again and hang it up. The sand and oil clean and coat the blade, lessens rust, and keeps the shove blade clean. Works for any rough hand tool you put in the ground.

Nice job fitting that to the tool! I am prettty hard on handles and usally replace them with 4 ft Steel pipes from H-D or Lowe's. A little rigging to attatch it and one less worry when applying pressure for this old gal! lol I did reuse an old oak handle on a flat edge shovel today but it turns out that it isn't the right tool for the job I needed but it looks great and probably will be handy removing the roof shingles soon!

Have you ever heard of or seen a shovel helper? Saw a video way back when, but cannot find it now. It is a 90° angle metal bar that fits close to the blade. Step on it to drive farther into soil. Would greatly help me unearth all the junk weeds infesting my yard. House was a rental for years and all they ever did was mow the weeds in place. Have a hat fork and pitch fork to uproot the junk, but as there is very little top soil I soon run into the "Missouri" rocks in short order.

The shovel handles usually break exactly where the screws are, because screws weaken the handle, so I would recommend using short and thin screws, they don't to other thing than avoid the handle come off.

If you look at old school shovels, the wood goes all the way through, just below the steel. Your shovel is going to bend the way you did it the first time you dig with it. New shovels do what you did. The wood must go all the way through or it will fail. My father taught me a few things that I actually paid attention to and quality tools is one of the things he taught me about.
