The crash didn't really look that bad. Amazing how much damage there actually is. Great job repairing. I've never crossed up ailerons before but I've mucked-up plenty of other stuff flying warbirds. I wish a thousand flights to you and this aircraft.

I stayed for the entire thing! Great job on fixing it. Gives me courage to try this. Always wanted to but couldn't find the courage to build a plane from scratch and crash at some time. These "foamies" are way ahead of what I could have imagined 50 years ago and cost vs quality is incredible. Don't have to hunt for bits and pieces here and it's all there. Electric and not mess, noisy engines which is fine, it was where the hobby started, but time moves on. What about a Dremel and cutting tool to make channels? Yes/no? Surprised at the number of videos where controls are reversed crashing the aircraft. I was taking a ground school before I had to leave, but was told the last thing before you take off was check controls for full movement even if you did them prior to taxi. Flaps for full range and set, then the important stuff, elevators full range, rudder for full range, check ailerons for full range and look at them. Better to find out there is a problem on the ground rather than up there. A few seconds could save a lot of nice models and heartbreak.

Thanks Ryan. I think a big takeaway is that you are methodical in your approach, just like any project, you have to assess, decide what materials to use and also be patient. These glues are awesome but, you need to let them set. I find one of my biggest difficulties is when to cut your losses. I’m in the process of a repair and I am struggling with whether or not to stop the process. Each step though, I am learning so, the exercise is a learning process.

I too got latex paint matched at Lowe’s for a UMX Wildcat that I crashed. It was perfect......until it dried. Dried a couple shades darker. I kept adding pure white latex little bits at a time until it dried to the exact same color. Something about the spectrometer matches it perfectly when wet but not when dry.

In case you did not know it you can use alcohol or hand sanitizer to wipe off the epoxy or smother it out by using a paper tile with alcohol on it . Will help blend epoxy in and keep it smother less sanding needed!

I use the thicker .CA and the quick set to get things set faster. What works best really is using foam tac and super glue both. I use T- Pins from a fabric store to pin anything together that needs it. I will not use epoxy unless the parts are completely broken off. Then I use the heavier round tooth picks to put the two halfs back together. I use light weight patching compound to fill my wrinkles and gaps. I then seal with a primer, preferably a sandable filler primer.

I don’t use CA for very many repairs as it’s way too thin and bridle. My go to is Gorilla glue. I’ve actually repaired a large scale P51 that snapped a wing completely in two using only popsicle sticks and gorilla glue. Still flies like a dream

Ryan, Great job on the Corsair. I have had to do some similar repairs last year on a FL Tigercat. Having every thing screw together does help, in the case of your rudder, so a new one will just bolt on. Keep up the flight videos and a money saving video like this, to bring them back to life. Rick

I completely destroyed my eflight corsair, got disorientated upside down in bad visibility, to low and wham! it was in a lot pieces and I put it in a bag and was going to bin it , next day I basically laid it out like the air crash investigators do and one piece at a time I glued and pinned her back together, 1 year on and she is still flying and better than ever, ove 100 flights woohoo, Hi from XJET crew member in New Zealand :)

question< why not remove motor and dunk the front in hot hot(ie not boiling but close) water to restore the foam to shape then reinstall after checking motor shaft for bends, same for wings and tail. then glue to hearts content?

Thanks, while I don't have to do any major repairs on my corsair (yet), I know this will help a lot. It's just a matter of time. Couple of questions, it looked like the you used a business card underneath the wing, what did you use on top of it for the metal look? Aluminum foil? Also, you mentioned weathering it in the future. Could you do a video on weathering on the cheap? How to do it w/o an airbrush.
@PilotRyanMedia
@PilotRyanMedia 5 жыл бұрын
Sure, I use a business card and then aluminum foil tape over the top. Otherwise it will show the hole you are trying to hide. I’ll keep that in mind to do weathering without an airbrush. I’ve never used an airbrush yet so it should be easy video to make.

Dont keep working your compound like that. just hit it and let it sit. I cought all kind of flak when I did a repair video using drywall patch. Some of my viewers had more money than smarts. I have been using drywall patch since I got into foam. Its lightweight and does a great job. I seal my drywall with modgepodge and it makes like a bullet proof shell. It will not dent or damage. You can seal it with any sealer, primer. You mabe did a longer video than mine and have tons of viewers, thats not the point. I just wanted to show people how you can do a great repair like you did. I guess I had a tougher crowd.

First of all, why were you doing aerobics that close to the ground? That's just asking for trouble, doing aerobic maneuvers while still in ground effect. When it comes to aircraft, even "small" or RC, land and upside down doesn't go together. I'm surprised that the 5min didn't eat up the foam, but you mentioned that some people use CA? From my experience styrene foam and CA aren't a good combination.

Ailerons reversed? Always do a thorough preflight!
@donkboys
@donkboys 4 жыл бұрын
It only takes one crash due to aileron reversal to teach you a valuable lesson.. do a thorough preflight . I crashed a brand new quarter scale Piper Cub because of aileron reversal. That was over 30 years ago. Taught me a valuable lesson. It only takes 5 minutes for a good ground check. Much longer to fix a damaged aircraft.
