They were only new once. Fixing and restoring as much as we can without turning them into new high tec, electronic beasts is for me. Restoring patina is quite challenging this show was a perfect example. I did one with all new everything including paint all work no fun, and now got 3 patinas going even my daily driver that plows snow and pulls out tree stumps while getting over 20 MPG. They are so challenging to make them reliable, correcting the faults like places where water wants to cause rust again, yet not destroying the natural looks is quite interesting. Giving them great fuel mileage, disc brakes, safety and reliability is a must. I overlap the floor panels over the rocker seams stopping the most vulnerable area for rot to start. Modify the fuel systems, and I'm now working on a fuel filler system that uses the stock fuel filler by the driver's door and fills the rear-mounted tank. Keep em coming.

Awesome! I was the same! 1st truck dad and I did was too nice. I wouldn’t drive it down a dirt road, it didn’t have wipers, and hated parking lots. Now I just want to make them as reliable as possible, throw junk in the back and drive them to Home Depot. If it gets door ding’d, oh well. More patina. Keep up the great work and thanks for keep them alive!

I appreciate the support! I figure we all have different budgets, so I show folks how I have to do it on my budget. It usually turns out pretty well for a few bucks. Thanks for watching!

Looking to get a little information on refurbishing my grill for my 1972. Somebody had a front end accident with it and put a 1969 grill a friend told me to just cut out the inside of the tin, smooth it out, and then buy a new honeycomb with a bowtie and it should look great, and it did! But trying to gather a few new tips on your channel I couldn’t help the notice your delivery on your comments. I am a big fan of vice grip garage and I don’t know if you are good friends with him or if you come from the same area but you have emphasized the word perfect. PERFECT in the manner that Derek uses it. Also used clickety-clack which is a very common term that Derek uses. Please clarify because I do think that you have plenty of things to offer to help people. I just am a big fan of intellectual property.

I hadn’t thought about altering the surround, but it makes sense. They were almost the same. VGG is one of my favorites along with some of the channels near me. Westin Champlin, Hoovies garage, Watch JR Go and the Car Wizard. All great guys. I haven’t met Dereck yet, but hope we cross paths one day.

I like your videos! 👍 I didn’t think about using a small screwdriver for JB Weld. Lol. I use pop cycle sticks on small jobs and tongue depressors on bigger jobs. I’m sure you can save a bunch of pop cycle sticks with 3 girls. Lol. You can pick them up at the dollar store cheap.

I’m also interested in learning more about the differences between the 71 & 72 Chevy model year trucks. I have what’s listed as a 71 but it has a couple of 72 qualities. It’s a 71 custom cab, AC dash, long bed, 350, 400 turbo trans, and the longest drive shaft that I’ve ever seen! ( don’t think drive shaft is original) Lol.

What I do is stick a small wooded wedge. And then fill the crack. And then release it, and you should pick up some, what we call grip clips small med. And large ones

Somebody should mention, if you buy several types or brands of paint and primer cans and other products. "Krylon" does not always play well with others. Lifting, or reaction can result, it can be solved by getting all the same brand or bringing a magnifying glass to read the fine print. But automotive finishes turn out best with supplies from the automotive paint supply. A grille is out front in the sun and driving rain, dusty conditions, and driving behind other vehicles. To me, it's worth a little expense to get a pro quality durable paint and shoot it once. I did this for some headlight buckets on a T-bird, mid 80's. The chosen paint lasted longer and looked better than Henry did.

So true about a magnifying glass and fine print. I have had a lot of success like you say with auto paint. It’s meant to take the exterior punishment vs day to day stuff. Thanks for the tips!

I’ve redneck’d some plumbers strapping to one with screws to keep it from wobbling. I’ve also used a couple long zip ties as well. Not pretty, but they worked.
