Dovetail bottoms for balusters is one of those hidden quality craftsmanship details. When I work on one of many DIY home repair/reno custom projects that require a fairly high degree of accuracy, I've gotten very accustomed to people asking, or perhaps stating, "You're still working on that??", hahhahha. I try to put it into perspective that on This Old House and various builder KZfaq channels that in 24 or so minutes you're often seeing the work of many experienced tradespeople's full-time work easily over the course of an entire week or even little projects, such as finish detail trim possibly 3-4 hours of work condensed into an 8-min teaching segment. So, thank you all the tradespeople out there who do it every day to make it happen. Your skills and that you even do it is valued.

Spindles: I thought they were called spindles too. Properly they are balusters because they extend down to the very bottom of the aperture. Spindles go down to a horizontal rail, running parallel to the bottom of the aperture. So, you can now trot this out and impress your mates any day of the week. I know I will.

The mending of the broken baluster was confusing. They glued one baluster. Then sawed in half another baluster and reattached with a dowel. That didn’t answer clearly Norms concern for a weak fix with glue and putty. Unless the one they sawed in half was previously glued and puttied and they sawed it at the point of the break now rebuilt with the putty.

So he glued it together, but it doesn't seem like he use clamps to hold the pieces together where it was glued. It seems like he used clamps just to hold it to the jig. Then he used epoxy to fill the voids. Did Norm question his work? After Norm questioned him it looks like he took a different approach buy cutting it and drilling it to put dowels in.

You can buy very similar stuff in the plumbing section of any hardware store, its called "plumber's epoxy putty" only difference is its gray instead of tan. Billy Mays also sold it on tv as magic putty. It's such handy stuff, dries rock hard in about 10 minutes.

Wow.... On the time they would have been submerged in paint stripper, I would have turned over 10 new pieces. While applying all pudding to hide breaking point, I would already had drilled and glued the new ones if really necessary. And what comes to that painting, varnishing etc job, total overkill compared what one does just with a brush. That thing was such a operation, that it can't be for anything else than show off how to go over budgets for that extra 5% result. These can't be done for anyone else than some home owners that doesn't have limited budgets and times. With no taste either. Like seriously these new TOH projects are such a industry presentations sometimes, that it doesn't make sense. A owner wants to maintain some old pieces, and end result is made to look brand new through complex restoration that is way more expensive than making a new ones. Just so that owner can later explain someone the money they put in.... (Nothing as TOH pays the expenses). The lacquer for handrail was so overkill. Huge work to cover all places just so that one can use a high power airbrush to apply multiple coatings in long period of time. A good carpenter would have done it in partial of all that time without difference in the final quality.

Hmm, the project is probably more about conservation as opposed to renovation. Renovation is not the object it seems as the spindles, (Oops, ed to "balusters") were carefully removed and repaired, invisibly, which ticks the boxes for conservation, just about. However would agree that the builders of a century ago fairly unlikely to just have a handy air spray unit about their personage. Ref the "taste" thing if the owners want to live in a conserved home and willing to stump up then surely just a case of sitting back and counting the cash. Plus there is no accounting for taste ... we occasionally get a filler item on the news ref the rebuilding of a London "mansion" ... much favoured by Russian gangsters, oops oligarchs I should say, or Arabic oil rich sheik bods. £50 million on the property ... then another £10 million on getting the place as they want it. British builders certainly don't worry about the clients' taste believe me. If the client wants solid gold flush handles on his bog then that's what he gets. London not the only wealth belt. There's a place in Cheshire where properties are sold off for £5 million, demolished and an even bigger property built on the site worth £10 million. The "taste" of some of the clients relates to "OTT Arab Sheik oil billionaire, money no object monstrosity." (OTT = over-the-top) But, again, do our builders decline the work on the grounds of the client's taste ... seriously? 😂😂😂😂😂

I'm confused. So lacquer is a type of paint, like enamel urethane etc, so they are just painting the stair a different color? Why not clear coat or varnish it? Note being a bit sarcastic as they really mean clear coating it but the slang term is lacquering which is both inaccuracte and shows a severe lack of knowledge. I would not trust this guy with any wood item of my own point blank, norm yes, Wayne not a hope in hell.
@t1n4444

No, no, no J! Do I have to explain everything???!!! Oh really J, please keep up! "Lacquer" is far, far, far more expensive than "clear coating". Remember the clients are paying for a quality conservation job ... and this "quality" extends to the wording on the invoice. This invoice will, as if by mere chance, come up in dinner party conversation ... Perhaps I should explain that specialist trades must first learn how to pen an invoice. Almost half their training is in "crafting" ... the invoice. And, as everyone knows, except you it seems, so kindly hang your head in shame, the very first part of "Crafting an Invoice 101" is describing, and convincing, the client that the lacquer, as used on their property, is distilled from the tears of a unicorn. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find a unicorn these days? No, and fortunately the client doesn't either. Luckily, the trade knows that "distilled unicorn tears" are also sold in tins ... labelled "water based acrylic varnish, clear".

@t1n4444
@t1n4444 3 жыл бұрын
@@jacilynns6330 Well, yes it is an inner voice ... it is debating with itself whether the invoice should include the time and labour to write up said invoice itself or just add another "nought" on the end of the total. Now, I kid you not, "Invoices part Deux", there were annecdotal stories doing the rounds a few years ago over a builder billing a client for dog food ... The builder "justified" this item because his dog was sitting in his van all day guarding it, and therefore deserved to be fed "off" the job. Never heard how it finished. Dunno how it went ... might even be true ... 😂😂😂😂
