How to repair iPhone, iPod, and iPad Apple's Lightning USB cable? If your #iPhone, #iPod, or #iPad #Apple #Lightning #USBcable is damaged it's an easy, cheap, and quick way to fix it! All you need is:
- a shrinking tube (2:1) in diameter of 4.8 mm (up to 6.4 mm) shrinking to 2.8 mm (up to 3.2 mm)
- any kind of small or medium scissors
- hot air
I recommend using small office scissors to expand the shrinking tube, a white shrinking tube to match the color of Apple's cord (looks fine for me) and a hairdryer to shrink the tube. The heating gun may give you too much heat and Apple's cable may be melted, so be careful with this beast!
If you need help, write a comment.
I will answer you as soon as possible.

help! I am buying my 4th charger in a week and I am going to get shouted at if I tell them it doesn’t work AGAIN! I cleaned all the lint and mess in both iPad and wire. The wire looks clean and there was no mess in in whatsoever. I cleaned all the plugs. I plugged it in, still, DOEST WORO! Somebody HELP PLEASEEE! When I buy new chargers they work and then all of a sudden they stop working! I’m so tired of this..

Why to fix , if everybody has same problem, it means there is a mistake in these cables Apple produces, I am a big Apple fan but I bought more than 20 cables for my 2 iPhones in the last 5 years
5 жыл бұрын
I'm an Apple user since 2006 and I'm so disappointed in some areas of Apple quality. For instance, this cable issue... Buying a new one and throwing the old one in a trash bin is the simplest way. The 3-foot wire is not a big problem in a one trash bin, but if You multiply this X times... That's why repairing things if it's possible is so important. Less electro trash = better future for the next generations. Apple is so worried about the environment, so why are they selling such a garbage? It made me sad and angry!

Search for "the heat shrinking tube", you can find it online or in a local hardware store (electrical department). There are two different types of tubes, low and high quality. The low-quality ones are made with the kinda shiny material/plastic. The better quality tubes are matt (they look and feel similar to the new Apple cords). The high-quality tubes are more expensive, and hard to find, but worth it! The high-quality heat shrinking tubes are easier to stretch. Thank you for the comment and let me know how it goes! 😀👍👍

LONG NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS work the BEST! Insert the head of the pliers into the tube and then open the pliers. The handles of the pliers give you the leverage and control you need to stretch the tube without breaking/tearing. I can stretch a tube in about 30 secs with the needle nose pliers versus other methods.

Try to use heat shrinking tube, it looks way much better than electrical tape. No sticky cord or unsticking tape. Tested! Still looks and work pretty fine after over one year. Try to achieve this result with electrical tape, in my opinion, it is impossible.

This is common issue for MacBook users. Regular tape is not safe, cord may get fire because of this tape. Use electrical tape or avoid to use MagSafe with damaged cord. If You must use MagSafe be careful. Heat or electrical shock may be danger for your health or even life!

Pick up some heat shrink tubing that has an ID of between 6 and 6.5mm. Look for a shrink ratio of at least 3:1. 4:1 if you can find it. That will eliminate the need to stretch smaller ID 2:1 tubing. It will make for a simpler, and better repair.

Personally, I think a better repair would include shrinking the tubing over the molded plastic part of the plug to help reinforce the entire cable and limit flexing at the weak point. I just did this and it virtually eliminated the flexing. I used a small diameter heat shrink tube and used the scissors to expand the tube so that I could get it over plug.

I've tested fire from lighter and tealight. Both sources of heat made white shrinking tube blackened (if the fire was to close to tubing) or yellowish (after a couple of days after repair). Using hot air from a hairdryer or heat gun, the is no such things as yellowish tint or smoked layer on to the shrinking tube. I prefer hot air because it gave the best result when we talking about good looking repair as it possible.

I was tested 3.2 mm (1/8") and 4.8 mm (3/16"). Usually, tubes shrinking 2x time. If you need to cover the plug and cord use 4.8 mm. For protecting only cord use 3.2 mm, but first, stretch the tube. And be careful with heat, Apple's cords are fragile/gentle. I highly recommend using hot air for instance from hair dryer instead of some kinda flame source as a lighter or candle. Good luck and let me know how was it!

Good point! The liquid electrical tape gives almost the same results as a heat shrinking tube. If you combine both methods in a proper way, it may give a great final look. But there is one kinda problem, the liquid electrical tape is more expensive than heat shrinking tube so the repair is going to be more expensive. It may be a problem for some reason. For me, it's not a problem. Thank you for the advice!

@flightworks6874
@flightworks6874 5 жыл бұрын
Tasneem Mountaj if the break is further down the wire, you can solder the wires together but if it’s close to the plastic connector part you will need to cut into the plastic carefully and desolder the wires from the pcb then solder the wires back onto the pcb and insulate the whole thing with heat shrink and hot glue. A lot of work so if that’s the case you’re better off buying another cable and ensure that you only buy an apple or apple verified one because most offbrand ones will not work and a pop up will show on ur screen saying the cable is not apple verified, even if it works at first, after you update your iOS then the cable might not work anymore.

4 жыл бұрын
if the cable no needs soldering just use heat shrinking tube as it is shown in this video. If the cable needs soldering, and if you don't have that kind of skill than you need to go to a local electrician service or buy a new one (if the cost of repair is higher than brand new charger unit).

On the one I fixed the wire braid had unraveled a bit. I twisted it gently until I found the right position for it to sit like it was supposed to. Then I would recommend using some electrical tape to hold in securely, then put the heat shrink on right over top. I actually didn't bother with the electrical tape as I couldn't find where mine was at the time! Seems to be fine so far =)

Yes, good point. The self-fusing silicon rubber electrical tape is easier and faster and way much better than regular electrical tape but doesn't look good as a heat shrinking tube. At least in my opinion. In this video, it's all about the good-looking effect. It's a hard way but looks more esthetic.

I think it's possible. But the tubing diameter must be smaller. I will run some test and answer your question in more details as soon as it is possible (probably tomorrow).
5 жыл бұрын
Tested after almost one week! It was so long because I was waiting for heat shrinking tubing in a couple of sizes and shrinking ratios. After running some experiments with different tubing I can tell one thing. There is an easy and more complicated way to do it. So, there are shrinking tubes with 3:1 and 4:1 shrinking ratio, not only 2:1 (used in this video for Lighting USB cable repair). For Apple's cable earphones, you need tubing with 2 mm diameter after shrinking. 2 mm is a cable diameter. For older earphones with a regular plug (3.5 mm jack), you need heat shrinking tubing with 2:1 ratio up to 4 mm. The jack plug is 5 mm diameter, so you need to stretch the tubing (the more complicated way) from 4 mm to 5 mm. If you decide to buy tubing with 3:1 (6 mm) or 4:1 (8 mm) ratio, then you don't need to extra stretching (the easy way). If you have new earphones with Lighting plug (8 mm wide) just buy 3:1 (stretching) or 4:1 (no need to stretch) shrinking ratio. The cable diameter is the same in both earphones models, 2 mm. Hope it helps. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.
