How to repair your Jeep Liberty's rear brakes. Dust shields.

Quicker fix to the backing plate issue. Rusted off rivets causing the backing plate to Free float and cause rubbing/squealing noises. Now this quick fix was what the customer requested. The correct way is to remove the axles, replace the seals at the same time, drill the rivets out and install new ones, WITH the possibility of replacing the backing plate as well. Expensive. Here, I just drilled thru the axle hub to get access to the rusted/broken off rivets, drilled the rivets out and installed 5/16 sheet metal screws, backing plate now seats flush against the axle tubing with no rubbing.

I had the same problem. Thanks for your solution. I used a shorter smaller screw since I had a short drill bit. You saved me a lot of money.

Just had the same Jeep here for an oil change, checked things out, back there and things are good. Nothing loosened off, no brake squeal, backing plate nice and secure. Thanks for watching and commenting! Wayne S. in Canada.

@@stumpr1 im prob gonna do this to mine, really dont weana have to slide axel out n dust shield top rivit broke, gonna give er a go just need the backing plkate to stop sqeeking off top of rotor

@@fitzysbaby2677 you can also pound a wheel stud out and have access to the plate, for a rivet install. Sadly, the Jeep got written off, no more Liberty videos.......Stumpr1 Cheers!

I'm working on the same problem. But instead of drilling a hole I used an air hammer and drove out the wheel stud and it just barely fits if you have long drill bits. Saves time and doesn't make the flange weaker.

YES! so true, seen a few people do that. Knock out a stud and run a long drill bit. So far, this fix has been great for the Jeep, still running fine. Thanks for watching, cheers! Stumpr1

Rebuilding a junk yard rear diff for my 2006 jeep liberty, all new bearings and seals, adding a trutrac lsd. Was wondering why the both backing plates where just wobbly. THANKS for posting, gonna use screws anyway

The rivets that hold the backing plate on, rusted away. This created the e-brake shoes touching the rotors, causing them to squeal when backing up. Thanks for watching, Cheers! Wayne S.

I just pulled the ebrake shoes off, and put a tack weld where the rivits were, and passed saftey with ease

Yup, that works, as this Jeep here never really ever used his e-brake. Thanks for the comments.

Matthew Brooks That depends on the condition of the backing plate. I just did a 2006, same side, went with NEW on EBAY. Comes complete with caliper bracket and shoes, hardware and parking brake pawl.

By the way, there are 3 rivets, one at 12 O'clock high, on 2006-2007.

cost of parts and labor would be crazy. [at the dealer] Did you pull the axles and replace the seals at the same time? I do not remember if I checked ebay prices for these items.

glad it worked for you, It has been over a year and this fix still is working great for his 06' Jeep. No rear noises from the brakes. He just had his P/Time 4wd light come on and we have to change out the transfer case switch, just one little thing after another on these things. Cheers! Wayne S. Stumpr1

Damn, I just cut mine off figuring I could just buy the backing plate to bolt on. I was changing the axel seals anyways. Than I priced them and could only find the whole assembly. 260 bucks a piece. Crazy.

@@stumpr1 Right now I'm running with out a parking brake, only problem is it's a standard transmission. I'm going to try finding a u pull it or some junk yard, I just need the back plate non of the other crap they put on there to drive up the price

seems like it is dealer only item. [I think] The guy's Jeep I fixed never uses his ebrake, auto trans in the Liberty. He wanted it done quick, so, no pulling axles, etc. Good luck finding something not to rusty.

I see you used 5/16 screws, but what length of screw did you use? I'm not in front of the car right now and can't recall how much clearance there is. You used self-tapping sheet metal screws and not machine screws with nut/washer? Thx and great solution!

Went to do this repair over the weekend and there are no holes in the hub on my Jeep...? Apparently they did not do that on my '06 model. :(

@@eladokc if you haven't figured it out you can just punch out a lug bolt. And you can put it right back.in once done. Safe you the drilling and a hole in your hub

Just remove the parking brake pads and cut the backing plates off. Rock auto has 2 piece plates for $220 for both sides

good idea, but, this Jeep just smacked by a Honda, so it may not need any other repair[s]. Might be going to that junk yard in the sky.

lmao, why would anyone drill the axle hub? Just pound out a wheel stud ffs. Few taps of a good hammer and its out and easily reused.

"Bones, I need a 3/8" socket with a 3/8" ratchet, stat" "Damn It Jim!, I'm a Doctor, not a mechanic, get your own damn socket and ratchet and while you're at it, install your own damn backing plates and tires"! Star Trek, circa 1966, episode 4, 17th minute in, look for Jim's Jeep Liberty stuck on Verna 4. Your rear pads? rotors? or the Dust shields themselves? The dust shields are riveted into place and the rivets rust away if you live in the snowbelt area. Causing the dustshield and ebrake shoes to move around.

yup, rusted out/thru. This should be a safety recall in my opinion. Dealer item only, expensive too replace as you have to pull the axles to change the shields out. My guy wanted a quick fix, this is what I did. [video] IF you pull the axles to change the shields, change the seals and have a good look at the axle bearings, plus change the diff fluid. Cheers man!
