Thanks Terry. You and me are about the same age. I've changed the older drum break shoes and always had to struggle with the task. Thank God todays cars have 4 wheel disc breaks. I never have had to change the E-break shoes but, after watching your performance i think i coul do it. That looked pretty slick. Its nice when you can do your own maintenance. I like saving money and doing these types of things. Thanks buddy. As my dad used to say, " a penny saved is a penny earned". Pretty good logic.👍👍👍

I think a lot of people could do more for themselves. Many just need a little confidence boast. Of course there are some who just are not cut out for this type stuff. I agree a penny saved is a penny earned. We have saved a small fortune by doing our own work. Building this homestead/farm and our houses, barn, shop and other outbuildings is going to be saving us a huge fortune. We will be saving several years worth of income for each of us in the next year or so. Saving money is music to my ears. Thanks for watching and hanging out with us shade tree mechanics, ha ha! Terry

Hey happy Fox. We are hoping to be posting a lot more videos the rest of this year and on into the next year. There has been a change in our working status that soon should allow us to start making huge progress on our farm project. Its been a long time coming and what we have been working toward for many years. Do not ever let someone tell you that you can not do something. Put your mind to it, work hard every day for it and you would be surprised at what you can accomplish. Get someone else on board with you like my family (including my son, wife and daughter in law) have been with me and great things can be accomplished. Hang on because its fixing to get very interesting! Terry PS Thanks for sticking it out and being one of our long time followers on this channel.

95+ explorers use the exact same brake shoes. Same slide mechanism parts. They however use TWO heavy springs at the top. One on each side of the shoe. And they are stretched to the v-tab at the very edge of the shoe @5:43! That is why it is there! Not a fun job. At least you are sure they will always retract! They suggest pulling the axle.

The hardest part is getting the clips on then rotating the pins. I found using an awl worked better for installing the last free end of the springs. Get the J-end of spring around the awl then stick the awl a little ways into the receiver hole, slowly move the awl handle outboard and the j-end slides down into the hole. The heavy spring is harder to install then the spring at the adjuster. Don't forget to coat the adjuster threads and inside the sleeve with brake grease. I think the job is harder than this video makes it appears. Patience !

Good points. Yeah its a difficult task. I have been blessed with good mechanical skills. :) When I was just a kid maybe 12 or so I watched my grandpa fight with the breaks on grandmas car for about an hour or more lol. I learned some new and interesting words that day. I kept telling him to let me try but he did not listen. Finally after the struggle he stepped back and said go ahead if you think you are so good. I reached over and put everything in place without a bit of struggle on the first attempt. He was blown away. He gained a new respect for me that day. :) Terry

Thank you for the video! I need to do this on my commander. 2 years ago the adhesive on my emergency brake shoes let go when I was replacing my wheel bearing. Instead of putting new shoes on it I used construction adhesive to stick the shoes back on🤦🏻‍♂️ It’s still holding but my emergency brake doesn’t work to well.

As a wj owner I'm intrigued as to the complete absence of the disassembly & reattachment of the handbrake cable to the shoes? Small point but not even a mention of the cables which is part & parcel of a job like that. I've done plenty of my own repairs in various shapes & forms living in Southern Africa

Another method is to remove both rear wheels. The fairly common procedure and expectation is that the brakes SHOULD be changed in pairs. With the other wheel off you have a reference on one side for the other..
@ForestToFarm
@ForestToFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have done that many times in my younger days when I was a mechanic. When working in my yard/patio I generally try to only have one wheel off at a time for safety but not always. Terry

This video is great. I am getting ready to replace the parking brake shoes on my 2003 wj grand Cherokee Laredo. The service manual says you have to pull out the the front seats, the rear seats, the center console, trim molding, and carpet to access the brake cable in order to put slack in the line before servicing the parking brake shoes. I wanted to ask you if putting slack in the cable was necessary and if so did you need to pull everything out to access the brake cable inside.
@ForestToFarm
@ForestToFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Not gonna lie to you. I was flying by the seat of my pants on this project. I will say that the cable was very very loose and everything went together easily. If when putting the pads in things became difficult or the cable seemed tight I would have loosened it at that point. I am no expert and that may not be the correct way to do things but it worked for me. The thing is I have been blessed with decent mechanical skills and judgement. You have to know your limitations. Not being there Or knowing you I would have to advise going by the book. Hope that helps. 😁 Terry

Thank you for sharing your experience. I asked the same question on a forum for wj jeep owners and a few people who have also done the job said that the job can be done entirely outside of the rear of the vehicle. No one has mentioned so far that they had to go inside and remove parts. I have decent mechanical skills so I feel pretty good about getting the job done after seeing the process on video. Thank you again for your help.

I think the service manual is adding extra precautions in case of a worst case scenario. I will be prepared to gain access to the cables if needed, but I am going to avoid tearing all that stuff out at the start if I don’t need to.
@ForestToFarm
@ForestToFarm 3 жыл бұрын
They probably do like you said for the worse case. But they also base you cost on time. If that is a step they will most likely charge by the book even if they skip the step. Not saying a dealer would try to get a few extra bucks out of you but they do sometimes 🤪 Terry

Question If your e break is bad will it lock up the rear tires
@ForestToFarm
@ForestToFarm 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on what is wrong with it I guess. I had my back tires lock up once when the break shoes fell apart about 40 years ago. I Assume it could happen to the Jeep as well. Could be rear end or transmission problems as well. I am not an expert on the subject. We do this stuff on a need basis, ha ha. Then we just tear things apart and see what its gonna take to fix them. Whenever you are going through that much work to replace the parking brake shoes please buy a new hardware kit and don't reuse the existing hardware. A hardware kit runs about $25.00. The failure rate for poorly installed parking brakes due to hardware failure is extraordinary.
