How to replace a close coupled toilet syphon | Dudley Turbo

Toilet syphons are normally reliable, but the diaphragm inside of the syphon can eventually fail. Replacing the syphon on a high level or low level toilet is much easier than on a close coupled toilet. Here we are replacing a standard toilet syphon with a Dudley Turbo 88 syphon, which is a dual flush (so it saves water) and also is in two parts so the next time you need to replace the syphon diaphragm it is much easier. You can buy the parts at your local plumbers merchants or even get them on ebay- fave.co/2p1srzg

Followed this tips in this video today. Got away with just replacing the piston in the syphon. Total cost £1.20. Sorted! Mine is not a close-coupled toilet, so didn't have to remove the cistern which made it easier, as mentioned in the video. A tip I picked up is that you can now buy syphons which are in two pieces which means you can repair or replace just the moving bits without disturbing the pipework or the cistern. Why they weren't all designed like this in the first place is a mystery.

I've had issues with the flush on my toilet for a while. got a plumber to come and take a look and of course it worked fine that day. After a few days of taking a few times to flush, it finally packed in altogether on the bank holiday weekend. This video was an absolute lifesaver for me. Without it I would have had to wait several days for a plumber and find someone to wait for them whilst I was at work. Having watched the video several times, I made a list f everything I might need, then went on the Bank holiday Monday to buy it all. Had a lot of difficulty getting the cistern off the wall because of rusted butterfly nuts and so had to cut them off. following the video though, everything else was fairly straightforward, even for someone like me who does as little DIY as possible. Great tip on the syphons that don't need removing in future to replace the membrane. Thank you for posting this.

I watched this video a few days before replacing the syphon, the “ home maintenance technician “ that my niece pays an insurance premium for said it was a difficult job, the cistern would probably crack and a new cistern and replacement tiling would be required!, and wouldn’t touch it I bought a new syphon and close coupling kit for £15, the old wing nuts and bolts snapped off when I used an adjustable for leverage so I was fortunate because I don’t have a small grinder, after that everything was comparatively straight forward, many thanks for a very informative video

I stumbled across this video while watching home improvement videos. In the US our toilets use a flapper with a chain hooked to the flush handle. Those syphon toilets you guys have look way better than ours. The US now requires low flow toilets, and they clog very easy. My fill valve broke in my toilet, so I bought a kit and replaced everything. The kit's overflow tube was taller than my original so I just set the fill valve higher. Now the flush is more powerful and it hasn't clogged up since.

I too have a Dudley Turbo, which I fitted years ago. For some months it has been misbehaving, and the whole flush unit swung up as it flushed. I planned to replace the whole thing, and watched this video to remind myself what I did last time - and right at the end, as you reassembled it, you said "that needs to clip in at the bottom first - EUREKA! 2 minutes with hands in cold water and problem fixed! Thanks 👌

about 6 months ago I was shocked to get a bill from a plumber for £450 (he also had to be called back 3 times as hadnt actually sorted the problem)! I was there when he did the work and I would say in total he was at the house for about 2 hours. He tried to pass the cost off on parts but the bits listed I could by for about £30. Fast forward 6 months and toilet stops flushing.....Im not getting a plumber this time I thought! With the help of this video I managed to do it all myself for a total cost of £22. So annoying as replacing the siphon was actually more involved then the jobs I paid the rip off plumber for! Thanks so much for these videos. Really great content

It's people like Ultimate Handyman taking the time to share their knowledge and experience that keeps me coming back to KZfaq to learn more and more. I'm typing this with the cistern on the floor and parts around it. Although I've done this before, I find there's always something to learn, like why not to use Silicon, and paying attention to good clean up before assembling things back together. The £18 device looks well worth the money to save the hassle and time it takes to remove the cistern, clean it all up, and install it again for the sake of a small plastic disc.

Excellent video. 1. Clarity of explanation: A 2. Accounting for the unexpected: A 3. Dealing with problems: A 4. Comprehensive instructions:A I was all set for a long job on mine. But after watching this video I realised I had a 3 part, that just disconnects and lifts right out. Nice. Great video. P.S: My membrane was ripped. It is a sad fact that they don't make it easy just to replace the sheet of plastic, environmentally irresponsible.

I realise now it IS possible to remove rusted wingnuts and bolts without cracking the cistern. Two plumbers have doubted it could be done. I've never used an angle grinder before but tempted to buy (or borrow) a cordless one and repair my occasional leaking cistern. I made the mistake a number of years not using a new donut-washer when I replaced the flusher. Which later resulted in rusting bolts. Thank you so much for such a well presented video.

Thank you so much for that video! It told me almost everything I needed to know. I didn't know beforehand that I would need a new close-coupling kit. I certainly needed that! The membrane on the original siphon had indeed broken. I got a £20 replacement from Screwfix and installed that. Now I have dual flush (good for me, being on a water meter) and also an internal overflow (the external overflow is still there, of course, but it won't be causing harm to my building if something happens). The new one is, like yours, far easier to replace than the old type if there is a problem in the future.

How do you tell what the capacity of the cistern is, 7l or 9l When I visit my family in Australia, they have normal light switches and sockets in their bathrooms and I have not heard of any accidents, so you can grind away with a mains operated angle grinder until your hearts content in Aussie!! Thanks for the video, it was very well explained with attention to detail

+icespeckledhens Sometimes it says in the cistern, but if not you can measure it when emptying it with a jug etc. They also use 230v in most of Europe and you often see light switches and sockets in bathrooms abroad, but I guess you can never be too careful as there are some really stupid people out there that might try and use the angle grinder when taking a bath LOL. Thank you for saving me the cost of a plumber ! I have now successfully fitted a Dudley 88 in place of the cheap piece of kit fitted by the builders 12 years ago. Frankly I'm surprised the diaphragm lasted that long, but I'm not surprised the builders didn't fit a descent syphon in the first place. Thanks for an excellent and very helpful step-by-step approach .....fortunately I didn't have to angle-grind the bolts off, but I did take your advice to fit a new coupling kit as well to be on the safe side. I wanted to thank you for this video. Imagine how chuffed I was when I went to my toilet this morning and say that it had a serviceable syphon installed. All I had to do was undo a plastic nut and pull out the flush. The reason for my poor flush was a damaged plastic diapram. I just cut out a bit of plastic from a thick carrier bag, using the old diaphram as a template, reassembled it all and it works a bloody treat. Wouldn't have done it without the advice of this video so cheers. £80 saved.

Very useful video - saved me from calling out a plumber! A lot of useful tips you don't get with standard instructions or DiY books - eg how to get the water out of the cistern if the toilet won't flush at all, without getting water everywhere. Realised my problem was that the doughnut washer wasn't on properly (one set of instructions told you to put it in the pan rather than on the outlet from the siphon). Once I'd pushed it fully onto the outlet pipe, no problem.

i live in the U.S. and watch your videos mainly for entertainment even though most of what you post will probably not help me much here but I have gotten a lot of great tips from you. I never thought just how different american toilets can be from U.K. toilets. Our toilets have not changed much in a long time, nearly all of the guts in american toilets are universal, only thing that could be different would be the size of the flapper, which is what releases all the water into the bowl, but even then there are only two sizes and its easy to tell them apart. There are a couple of different styles of toilets but most (as in about 90 percent) are the same, white porcelain, with a 2 or 3 inch flapper (3 inch being post 2005 and 2 being pre 2005) and a single fill valve. Great videos though!

It was good to see a genuine repair job, complete with the problems of dealing with rusted nuts and showing the accumulated grime. It made a pleasant change from seeing people easily disassembling shiny, brand new kit. I'm certain that without your video, I would have taken much longer, spent a good deal more and ended up either injuring myself or breaking some porcelain. Cheers.

Hi there. Many thanks for taking the time and effort to make and share this video. I've managed to fix our toilet without a plumber and was well prepared for the task before I started. The builder of our house left us with a legacy of shoddy plumbing work and through learning how to put right the wrongs myself I've managed to save some money and gain new skills.

brilliant step by step guide, it gave me the confidence to have a go replacing my ancient syphon which was misbehaving for the past few months. some great tips in there and I got the whole job done in just over an hour (longest job was removing the fittings and fixtures which had been there for about 30 years), thank you so much for this as it has improved my health immensley (mainly cured earache from the wife!! LOL).

What a star. I've got a toilet exactly like that and I've had to change the diaphragm twice in the last eight years and it was a horrible job each time. That two-part syphon is a revelation and I'll be getting one. Thanks!

Thanks. I had done this job once before in another toilet and had to get a plumber in eventually as I couldn't t stop the inlet from leaking. This time I bought a Dudley Duo, on the advice of the helpful plumbers merchants (before viewing this clip) and managed to fit it perfectly this time with confidence after watching this very helpful demonstration. I even refitted the rusty close coupling kit I had removed as I hadn't bought one to replace it, though I did use LS-X jointing compound just to be on the safe side.

This is an excellent step by step instructional video. Thank you so much. I have learnt a lot and managed to replace my siphon without incurring any outside labour costs. I have installed a 3 part siphon as advised, so the next diaphragm change will be a piece of cake. Thanks again. Mark.

Thanks a bundle ~ I have changed the flush Syphon and the intakes on several toilets in the past, but never a Coupled Toilet ~ just looking at the set up made me pause (for a long time ~ then I found your Video ~ Outstanding ~ even got hold of a "Dudley Duoflush (about £20 in 2013) Split Syphon" so that next time the diaphragm gives up I don't have to take everything apart ... I am now sitting here waiting to check for any leakage (15 min & no signs) Once again ~ Thank you big time

Thank you for this video. Without watching this I would have taken and replaced the cistern until infinity! Instead of just 5 times! I watched this between the 4th and 5th time and realised I didn't have a rubber seal between the cistern and metal plate. No more leaks. Thanks!

Hiya pal! Toilet wouldn't flush properly for a few days now. I watched this video last night and today i've carried out the repair. The membrane had gone- got a replacement and then put it all back together without a problem. I didn't need a coupling kit and the syphon was ok to re-use! £7.20 + vat for membrane, silicone and silicone gun. Many thanks! Top Man! :-))

Hiya mate, excellent video, well done! Had no experience taking apart a cistern and viewed this twice before buying the parts and tackling the job. Stupid loo was 20+ years old & had a "siphon bomb" system, so even with a new siphon it just filled the bowl and wouldn't flush, even after taking it apart 10 times! Gave up, bought a complete new toilet after finding out siphon bombs stopped being made 15 years ago! Couldn't have tackled it without you though, thank you very much!

Very detailed with simple easy to follow instructions. I watched it twice and replace with Dudley turbo height adjustable system from B&Q for £23.00, coupling kit was £3.97 and a new washer instead of using the old one which cost £2.04. Total cost was £29.01 exactly and 2 and half hours of time. I had to cut the bolts off from old one as well and good cleaning took time. Just to say thank you for the video and could not have done without it since I didn't have a clue about this before.
