Just accomplished this today. I took my time and thanks to your video, it was easy! The only task is when the ball joints begin to spin. Oh and I had to partially disassemble again because I forget to reinstall the flat washer between the knuckle and axle. 😂

Your video gave me the confidence to replace mine and save $$$. So easy! Thanks for taking the time and helping so many of us wanabe gear heads! I ordered my axle (TrakMotive) from RockAuto and in the install instructions, it said in ALL CAPS NOT to put any lubrication, grease or anti seize on the splines or threads. I thought it odd to say that, but I did what they said. It seemed to have a coating of light oil on it already. I suppose each manufacturer might be different but thought I would mention this just in case. Probably makes sense to read the instructions if any come with the parts. Thanks again for posting!

I have a 2012 JGC with a little play in the driver rear CV Axle. I can’t find a video on replacing the rear axle on a WK2 but it seems like it would be simpler since you’re not messing with steering components back there. Mine has 167K on it and looking at its history online it was initially delivered to Illinois. I don’t know how long it lived up there before ending up down here in Oklahoma. There’s a barely visible outline on the rear hatch that indicates it even wore Euro style elongated plates at some point. Unlikely it was shipped to Europe and back but it may have spent some time in Canada. I’m expecting resistance during disassembly. Your personality and sense of humor are natural, enjoyable, and didn’t interfere with the purpose of the video. I’ll have more confidence tackling this job now. I saw you mentioned in a comment you had plans for a lift. I purchased a 2.5inch spacer leveling lift that a tire shop recommended. They backed out in installation after seeing the instructions and the next shop wants double so that project is on a back burner for now. I wish you’d have done a video on that since yours is the about the same age and condition as mine. I just don’t have the confidence to jump into that job myself. Thanks again.

@dougferguson5438
@dougferguson5438 Ай бұрын
@@TheDrpepper1985 Yes, the opening should be at the top since gravity will make it droop down, but the opening on the differential will move the ring into place without it catching. If the opening in the ring is on the bottom, it could catch and roll out of the groove.

Great video!! I have a 2015 GC and there are not many videos on front end suspension and steering components. However, with this particular vehicle it seems like it might be beneficial to just replace CV axles, control arms, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, ball joints, and struts alll @ the same time if you are going to be doing any one of them.
@langspeedcycle
@langspeedcycle Жыл бұрын
I would have to ask your logic on that? Mine had 160k miles and none of those parts showed signs of wear at all. Replacing those would have added several hundred dollars more in parts and hours of labor. Then needing to pay for an alignment.
@cwsosby
@cwsosby Жыл бұрын
@@langspeedcycle Agreed, but if none of it has been replaced in in 100k+ miles it might be worth your time to change everything out while it’s apart. I’d hate do lower ball joint just to tear it apart again in 6 months to do a wheel bearing or strut. But just my opinion and preference. I also lost my access to a lift recently, which takes a lot of the fun out of it 😂.

So went only rear wheel drive home. I got under and looked today and only issue I could see was this drivers side CV blown just like yours here in the video. Would this cause loss of 4wd or could there be a bigger issue?

Hey! So you need to figure out if you have a single speed or 2 speed transfer case. So if you have different 4wd options, that's the 2 speed. If you have a Laredo, like me, it's just full-time AWD, thus the single speed transfer case. You can also call a Jeep dealer with your VIN and they can tell you. Hope that helps!

Would a bad front CV Axle cause a humming noise and a slight vibration in the steering wheel at about 70mph (110 km/hr)? My friends Grand Cherokee has a torn CV boot and the grease has all vacated out of the axle joint. The front end components are otherwise all good (tie-rods etc).

Check the windshield cowl (rubber that sits against windshield under the wipers, had the same issue and taped it down onto the windshield with black all weather duct tape and it got rid of the noise. 7$ saved me from replacing a wheel bearing. If it starts at highway speeds and progressively gets louder with increased speed I can almost bet it’s that.

I think you're thinking of the transfer case's. If you cannot change any 4wd options, like on most Laredo models, that would be the single speed. But if you have other 4wd options, like on Limited models, that would be the two speed. You can always use your VIN number and call a dealership and ask.

I don’t think your upper control arm is supposed to be that tight. I have a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the front suspension would get an intermittent squeak and rattle sound, it only made the sound when the front suspension would have to work together like when I would drive over a solid speed bump for instance. Long story short loosening the front upper control arms helped get ride of that noise. Anyway if your front suspension isn’t a problem then totally disregard the comment
