Tks for posting; Not that hard once you are given the idea/notion of turning the slot to get-it-open; Most, like myself, are looking for a seam, and not finding one, we assume there's no way to open-it-up to check-a-fuse. Once you get-it, it makes sense, but not until you understand how it comes-apart, unlike MOST other such devices. Kind-of ingenious, imo. Garmin needs to use this video on their web-site, bc I couldn't figure-it-out watching their how-to. :)

Thank you sir! Our Garmin RV785 charge cable would not put power to the display unit. Could not figure out if the thing had a replaceable fuse in it. Finally, found the user manual and it showed how to replace the fuse; BUT, I could not get that damned tip off until I watched your video.

I used a large paper clip. The rounded edge does not scratch or deface the plastic.

it always amazes me how long Garmin stuck with the cigarette plug charger and micro-usb plug in the GPS unit. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it I guess.

Garmin's mini-USB uses a proprietary pinout that is different from standard USB. It's probably cheaper for Garmin to continue using their proprietary pinout instead of develop an entirely new one with USB-C. This is a discussion on what the pinout is. It's old but still valid: www.gpspower.net/garmin-tutorials/156747-garmin-nuvi-gps-u-s-b-power-connector-pinout.html

It works. Only problem is if you "roll up" the cable so you can put the gps into in my an opening in underdash 'storage' in a Kia (located in center between two front seats) - so that I don't have to use the stupid suction cup holder the cables short out within 6 months. The cables, at least with my luck, are always shorting out requiring you buy 1-2 a year.

Serious question: What would happen if you put a slow blow fuse in there?
@sat103
@sat103 Жыл бұрын
Melted plastics, a terrible smell of burnt electronics and/or fire. A Garmin charger uses a quick blow fuse to short the circuit fast in the event of a current overload. If a slow blow fuse were there, both the charger and the navigation device are at risk of a current overload with no protection to save them. The fuse wouldn't act fast enough.

@@sat103 Thanks. I appreciate it. I ordered some backup fuses, after coming across your video, and of course saw fast blow and slow blow.

Where can I purchase that fuse? Auto parts store?
@sat103
@sat103 Күн бұрын
Yes, as along as it's minimum 2-amp rated and "quick blow" or "fast act" type ("slow blow" or "delayed" would cause the charger to burn up before offering protection). Search an auto parts site for "glass fuse" and they should show up. Make sure it's the correct length so it fits in the Garmin charger.
