Leak under kitchen sink | Sink Dripping | Water under Sink
Fixing under-the-sink leaks is a project most homeowners can take on. These leaks are typically caused by a bad seal between the sink and the sink strainer. This guide will teach you the best way to fix the problem and maybe in as quick as 5 minutes.
How To Install a Kitchen Sink Drain Basket | How To Install a Kitchen Sink Strainer | How to fix a Kitchen Sink Water Leak
To fix a leak under the sink, you need to put a cookie sheet or bowl or both to catch the water and messy debris that could occur during this repair. Remove nuts and fittings along the drain pipe from the bottom of the kitchen sink drain by unscrewing the retaining nut. You may have to remove the p-trap or any other pipes to remove the sink strainer.
* Sometimes the Drain nut or Lock Nut gets frozen stuck and will not budge even after using a wrench. In such a situation, you might need to cut the nut itself*
Before applying new plumbers putty or sealant, you must clean the sinkhole thoroughly. Cleaning the sink hole properly is very important so that the putty can form a good bond. Once the cleaning is complete, dry it well.
Roll out a piece of putty about the thickness of a dime. If you find the putty hard and difficult to roll out, warm your hands to soften it so it's like playdoh. Usually, a new Kitchen Sink Strainer comes with all necessary parts in an organized way. Detach the screws, gaskets, and other parts carefully noting the order these parts were assembled. Later it’ll be easier to assemble them in the same manner. Apply putty to the bottom part of the basket edge. Now set the basket strainer into the sink for alignment before you put any pressure to squeeze the basket down into the sink drain. Don’t push it too hard.
Now return to the bottom side of the sink and start assembling all the parts. Carefully place the cardboard friction ring between the rubber washer and locknut. Then screw the locknut in place by hand first until tight As you tighten the locknut you will see excess putty squeezing out. Use a tool or pliers wrench to get everything firmly together, but not over tight.
Reattach the drainpipe and inspect all pipe fittings. Reattach it first loosely at all points and then tighten properly. And if you feel your drainpipe is damaged or problematic consider replacing the drain pipe under the kitchen sink. Check for leaks around all areas and even places you did not disturb such as that P-trap, garbage disposal, and definitely where the new strainer drain meets the bottom of the sink. Make sure there is no water leak at the rubber gasket. If your rubber gasket is not positioned in the center work it back to the center,
No leaks and the NEW Kitchen Sink Strainer is ready to use. Replacing the Kitchen Sink Strainer is an easy and simple task done in just a few minutes to under one hour. If you follow these steps hopefully won’t face any unwanted hassle. Should you have any issues or problems consult a licensed plumber as this video is for entertainment purposes only. Man, I'm loving the extra clear video. You are doing a great job. Ever since I almost burned my eyes out my life has changed. I was looking, unprotected, at the last solar eclipse, I now prefer extra clear videos.

@ClientGraphics. Thanks Chris for the quick DIY for the kitchen sink strainer. Appreciate the details both in your video and in the details section. Yours was a very straightforward repair. Even if the builder or plumber glued your trap, in your situation, that wouldn't have mattered. But a glued PVC trap causes other problems. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

I primarily see glued traps for bath tubs, showers and washing machines and in newer construction. I got really lucky this was simply easy and just fell apart without major damage underneath. Wife already wants a kitchen remodel with new counter tops, cabinets, sink and more. So this was both cheap and easy with enough time to same in a video👌🏻 Thanks for watching and commenting @C Adama

There are two trades I HATE doing as a home owner. Plumbing, because it is either gross or takes 15x as long as I intend it to. And electrical, because I dont like being electrocuted. I have worked on both, but I prefer leaving those jobs for others who know more and can do it faster.

Never replaced the compression washers in the slip joints? Also, a good time to time to clean out the trap. I still like the video.

I had to shorten lots of things to get the video under 6 minutes, but yes always a good time to inspect all the fittings and replace things as needed and clean out the trap if it’s not👌🏻

Easy to replace yes... But being a plumber myself I would have gone about changing the trap and continuous waste arm. It's like all 4 tires on a car. They All are connected and work together and the replaced part is only as good as the weakest seal. Change it all and inspect the cables as well for good practice.

Yes believe it or not some people do. While others simply have to much money or too little time or both so they pay to have it done and others simply don’t ever want to learn or are just learning for the first time. Not everyone is handy or mechanically inclined from birth.

Older folks, probably not, we grew up with DIY around the house... For the under 35, this is largely not the case.. I am appalled at how darn little so many smart ass 20 and and 30 year somethings know about basic repairs.. A few are clever and resourceful, but way too many would rather hire everything out, or let mom and dad fix it.

@@jenniferwhitewolf3784 I am in the young, but able to fix stuff range, and I can't believe how some people can live life without knowing basic repair and mechanical stuff. Most of the stuff I fix is just a matter of taking a few seconds and looking over the product or part that is needing fixing. I look for how it works, and then what is stopping it from working correctly.
