I own this bit set that includes the T-20 bit→ amzn.to/2vYbQiV
When your sander is not hanging on to the paper, it's time to replace your pad. My DeWalt 423 palm sander uses a 5” disc. The problem is that the little velcro hooks wear down and can not grip the paper any longer. The DEWALT DW4388 5-Inch Random Orbit Palm Sander Pad is a hook and loop model (velcro)

Well, imagine: A KZfaq how-to that gets to the point, demonstrates what needs to be done, and includes a concise narration without either overbearing background music or distracting noises to drown it out. Very good video. I know 100% more about the topic than I knew coming in.

Thanks mate. I just pulled my grandmother's table out of my parents basement and I want to sand it down and paint it. My dad let me borrow his sander but the pad needs to be replaced. Appreciate you taking the time to put this together.

Thanks for the video! This just happened to my Dewalt Sander I’ve used rehabbing properties for 10 years! I ordered the part on Amazon. It cost me $15 after tax. It will arrive in the next couple of days. Again… much thanks!

Great video clear explanations and outline, sad part for me is that the three screws gone bad cannot access because the heads already worn out.... any advice would kindly appreciate it... thanks

My pad and break assemble came loose while I was sanding, and I lost one of the three screws holding the pad in place. Found them at Lowe's....Stainless Steel, Pan Phillips Machine Screws, 8-32 x 3/4. Worked perfect! Couldn't find these anywhere on the web and Dewalt doesn't offer them as well.

My belt snapped, and when removing the pad, the metal shield is mostly torn off. Can I just remove the metal shield completely? What is the purpose of the metal plate attached to the pad? Sanding discs still hold to the pad just fine, and there is no information online about the purpose of the thin metal shield attached to the pad. Thanks

My same DeWalt Sander doesn’t show any access screw holes to take the old worn out H&L Head off and this is the one that it came with when new. Any ideas?

Good, but not good enough. Next time, after removing the plate, take some time to clean the tool, with a brush and compressed air, and perhaps a clean damp cloth.

Thanks for sharing. I found it is a wasteful if we throw away the whole rubber base of the backing pad. why dont the manufacturers just sell the gripping material so we can glue it on the rubber base.

I have a Porter Cable that I think has the same dimensions on the pad. My issue is with the pad deteriorating to the point that it became detached from the metal backing plate. Sandpaper was still stuck to the pad. I suspect that by the time the Velcro wears out, the rubber (foam) pad is probably not so good any more as well.

What do you think is wrong with it when applying pressure during use it slows down and stops. Once you pull it off the wood it starts back up again.

I put my sander away for six months and it had been sticking perfectly, but when I came to re-use it the paper wouldn't stick at all. It was the same paper I left on it. It seemed just lying in a box for 6 months destroyed the hook or loops. I'd love if someone could explain more detail of what happens besides wearing out. This sander was stored perfectly. Maybe they have a sell by date!!!

I did this and within five minutes, the sander started to make a loud noise and two of the screws shot out and were stripped. I ordered new screws and the same thing happened. It’s been very frustrating. I tried using super glue the third time but I think they were stripped already.

That's my problem. I got screws at Ace Hardware, worked for about 25-30 minutes, then screws stripped out of the replacement pad. (The orginal pad came off long ago and just got around to replacing it.) Don't know if I have to just buy a new sander. MOtor is still GREAT!

u will either need to tap the whole to the next size or see if u can replace them... if not sander is no good.. maybe for parts.

@@robertrodriguez2642 the OEM replacement part is around $16-$20 bucks. Gas to get to the post office $10-15? postage to send the sander to DeWalt $15? 4-6 weeks waiting for your old sander. **OR** a brand new toy (wait.. I mean sander) 50-60 bucks no waiting involved. If it were me, if I didn't want to d.i.y. the repair I wouldn't bother sending the machine to DeWalt. Just purchase it new! Additionally check, Craigslist, Letgo, OfferUp, eBay, etc.. you could find them for cheap. ✌🏻
