How to replace a Pump Seal in a Pentair Intelliflo pool pump and Daily VLOG 129

Detailed instructions on how to replace a pool pump seal for a Pentair IntelliFlo or Whisper Flo swimming pool pump. This should also work for repairing a Hayward pool pump too. You'll learn how to quickly remove the pump motor and the steps involved to replace the mechanical seal. If you have a water leak spraying out of the seal between the plastic pool pump housing and the motor assembly, then this video will show you how to fix it. Plus a bonus Daily VLOG.

Thanks for this tutorial. Stumbled across this vid when searching for a fix. Saw yours was exhibiting bing similar symptoms to mine (not as bad of a drip though!) and proceeded to follow your instructions. Step by step was perfect. Bought a new PS-1000, followed the steps and it’s looking good. Only difficult part was getting off the impeller. Was wayyyy tighter than yours looked. I also learnt that in extreme heat it could actually be a bad impeller rather than the seal. Apparently the taper has a tendency to expand which means a seal doesn’t fit properly in it. Fortunately mine looked good. Once again appreciate the vid. Watched a few and this was by far the best. Helped me do it myself simply.

Thanks for the video Vince. I just replaced the pump seal. When I turn the pump on there was a load squeaking sounds at first then got quitter as the pump ran. There was still a leak however. I turned of f the pump. Should I expect that sound? anywhere else the leak may come from?

I used to work on pools while in college...many years ago. The pumps today sure have changed. How long before the motor must be rebuilt? Great DIY skills my friend!

I’m not sure motor rebuilding and rewinding is a thing anymore. I haven’t seen a motor shop in years. I suspect its a dying profession like the vacuum repair shop. This motor is variable speed and saves tons on electricity. I’ve had it for 5 years, I think. It paid for itself after 3 years. I’m in the black now.

"Don't ever touch the bearing surface with your fingers, the least amount of oil can ruin the seal!!" 3:50 Oops. Wear rubber gloves when you handle it and use a 1" diameter PVC pipe to drive the ceramic seal in.

Excellent video...FYI...IMPORTANT...The instructions by the seal manufacturer specifically say to NOT use grease that contains either PTFE or Silicone...(I routinely use both for jobs like this)...So instead I used a good quality lithium grease...

Cool. The lithium grease will help it slide in, I’ve always used silicone cause when it dries it will help seal any imperfections. Maybe its overkill, but I can see why it would hurt or why the manufacturer says not to use it. Either do what works. Glad I could help. Silicon and PTFE based lubricants draw the carbon from the primary ring and smear this material on the face of the mating ring, causing a build up which eventually destroys the sea

Regular 100% silicone you can get it from any hardware store or amzn.com/B000PSE46S/?tag=povert0f20-20

The silicone I use we get it from a pool hardware store called scp or superior pool products, You can also find it at local pool stores but it's expensive. Its cheaper at a home depot or lowes.

I doubt it. They would more likely cause a squeak. I would think a groan would be dry wear, therefore it would leak.

Great video! I saw some videos that say you should let the silicone cure for 12-24 hrs before priming the pump. Does it really matter?

It's not silicone sealant. It's silicone grease. It doesn't cure. That said, the seal manufactures don't recommend using silicone grease on the seal. Just clean the area and use soapy water or something called US Seal lube to lubricate the areas where the seal is pressed into the housing.

Nice video. Something I wonder about: does the pump seal gasket (the one you are holding at 5:00) have a correct orientation? It does not look completely symmetrical (one side is tapered, the other is flat).

No. The flat side can go against the pump housing or the pump face. It gets squished and seals. But I get your concern. My OCD likes to put the smooth side of washers toward the nut even tho it doesn’t matter.

Dude you rock takin apart my 3hp itellafloVSF right now just got to the impeller. my slow leak made a lot of build up salty looking stuff around motor area causing paint to come off will that destroy my motor?kind of like how salt builds up on a salt water tank around loose fittings. Any thoughts?

Here in California the motor would probably be fine without paint. Depending on where you live, the weather can be bad for the metal. Clean it up and repaint it if you’re worried.

Look at all the room on back side of the pump. Never that much room here. Usually pumps have to come all the way out . Just more steps

Is it the right seal? It needs to be pounded in using a piece of pipe, then the impeller part needs to be seated all the way in. I assume you did that, so the only thing i can think of is its the wrong seal? Leslie pools will install the seal free if you take the pump to them. So maybe they can trouble shoot?

I can't* get the pump impeller to loosen. I removed the reverse thread screw but impeller is super tight.

My pump isn't leaking but has a hard time getting primed and pumping do you think the seals need replacing to fix it?

If it is primed today, but loses prime tomorrow. Then the seals are definitely bad. If it is more than a foot above the water, then it just can’t pull prime and you’ll need a check valve in front of it. You should probably have a check valve anyway.

Other than chemicals. I was one told a pump thats isn’t bonded (grounded) to the pool will corrode. Mine wasn’t bonded for 8 years and the pain came off. It’s bonded now and seems fine.
